TODAYS T.O. PIKE - Not showing off, only 1 week left!!
ccmtcanada replied to snag's topic in General Discussion
WOW!!! You did it again! Great job out there...I think I'll have to get down to the lake tonite or tomorrow and see if I can pull anything out of there. It'll kill me though...if I pull a nice walleye out by accident....cause I cant post on OOS fish...LOL. You think if I photohop it just right I can make a walleye look like a pike??? -
Well Happy Birthday to the both of you! Syd's 5th birthday is on Saturday...right between yours! Hope all goes well with the Lund....I can see Shawn now looking at all the additions compared to last fall.....
-
Sorry to hear about the family emergency, but I'm glad to hear that things are getting back to normal. I was a little concerned....I PM'd both Shawn and Ecmilly because I hadn't heard from you guys in so long. Shawn must be happy that the boat is coming out of storage!!! Take care guys...see you around! Cliff

Welcome to the board....since you're new, we'll cut ya some slack! The best way to get advice and info from people is to start with your intro (which you have done). Then help out others whenever you can...the trust will build from there. Good luck with your fishing...you'll like this board...easily the best on the net!

We converted all light bulbs in our house to CFL over a year ago. We haven't had any burn out yet, but I too heard that news report on once the do burn out there may be a fire hazard. This would be a huge blow to the energy conservation movement if they dont act on this quickly...esp since some areas (I believe Australia and others are considering it) are banning the outright use of incandescent light bulbs.

Wouldn't that be something if muskie did begin to roam our spot....sweet!!! Guess I should start bringing the bigger rod/reel there...LOL.
-
But Walleye are out of season....I would hope I didnt catch one!! We release everything we catch anyways. We'll get out there again soon I hope. Great pike there Snag...beats my PB in weight by over 50%.... LOL. We find that when the Pike are in, the Walleye are not...so not too much risk in accidental catch there.

Cant wait for Lakair! Campsite is booked, babysitting has been arranged, now it's the waiting!! ARGHH!!! From everything I have heard, it will be a blast.

Nice job!!! It's great to see your TO pike posts again...I missed them!!!! Maybe if the pike are back in the shallows there, they are back in my neck of the woods. I'll have to get out soon though!!! Great work Snag...and yes, I cant bring myself to call you Snog yet...LOL

However, if a house was about 100 yards off in the distance and a driveway went right by the pond, I'd be wary....signs or not....

Here's an interesting article from the Star. Looks like bad news for trout anglers...but who really knows the impact? It doesn't mention steelies...does that mean they'll be even more hungry to chomp at bait that we throw at em? I've bolded a few sections as it relates to fishing.... URL for the story is http://www.thestar.com/News/article/194293 -------------------------------------------------------- Is mayfly's demise a clue for the wise? Once abundant on Credit River, tiny fly may be victim to development Mar 21, 2007 04:30 AM Phinjo Gombu STAFF REPORTER The Green Drake is a little mayfly that's only about 4.5 centimetres long, but favoured by trout, which love to gorge on it. The flies spend several years in a riverbed, in a nymph stage. When they emerge in late May or early June for action-filled lives lasting about a week, they do so in a gossamer blizzard, numbering in the tens of thousands. Brian Balunas, 70, a long-time angler, likens this little miracle of nature to "a light snowfall coming off the river." The disappearance of the Green Drake from the Credit River and other rivers in southern Ontario, first noticed by anglers about five years ago, is raising concerns about the health of the river and the possible impact of unchecked development. "This mayfly represents the canary in the coal mine," said Henry Frania, an entomologist associated with the Royal Ontario Museum. "That's what this is really about. "What they are basically telling us is that quality of the river and other rivers in southern Ontario are declining, and what we've been doing so far to protect the rivers just isn't good enough." For several years, Frania has been trying to find out what's killing the Green Drake, arguing that while it's the mayfly today, it could be human health affected tomorrow. There is documentation that on some rivers where the mayflies have disappeared, brook trout disappear a few years later, Frania said. The insect's sensitivity to pollutants makes it the perfect early warning system. That's why, Frania said, finding out what is killing it is a matter of urgency. "The nymphs are dying," he said. "There's something in the river that's killing them. There's no question about that." Frania has determined from the autopsies he's done on mayflies that the gut linings of the tiny creatures are being destroyed by something unnatural, something toxic in their diet. The Green Drake used to be found in abundance in the middle to upper stretches of the Credit, a regular denizen of the river as far south as the town of Terra Cotta in the 1980s. Now it's "functionally extinct," with only tiny pockets remaining in the river's upper stretches. Frania's theories about what's killing the nymphs range from pollutants and sewage waste to rising amounts of toxins produced by micro-organisms that are living longer because of global warming. Development, especially in communities like Erin and Orangeville, is a potential contributor and the problem is spreading, Frania said. Other species of mayflies such as the Quill Gordon have also practically disappeared from the Credit River watershed. The Green Drake population is rapidly declining in other watersheds, including the Rocky Saugeen River. Jon Clayton, a biologist with Credit Valley Conservation, called Frania's research indicative of a more widespread development problem. "As you change from forested areas and wetlands to farm fields or subdivisions, parking lots, malls – that has a dramatic effect on water quality," he said. Balunas, a retired TTC worker who has been fishing the Credit for more than 40 years, said he clearly remembers when the Green Drake would make its early summer emergence. It was wondrous, he said, especially when the flies, carrying up to 4,000 eggs each, descended after the frenzied mating ritual and bounced off the water surface to shake their eggs into the river. "When the Green Drakes came up, it was always fast and furious," said Balunas. Leafing through his fishing diaries, Balunas said he noted in 2004 that he spotted only one Green Drake in an area where they were once abundant. "It didn't happen overnight," said Balunas. "It gradually petered out by early 2000."

Beware when upgrading your existing XP system. I heard that Vista is a hog when it comes to graphics, so if your graphics card isn't up to snuff, then you'll be replacing some hardware....as well as what others have posted...more ram, faster processor etc... Vista will not see my computer!!

Thanks for posting the pics! Bly and I will be camping there for the G2G in June....cant wait!
-
Scary scary clips there from youtube. I have no faith that our gov't will do anything effective. Sure, they've made it illegal to possess live Asian Carp, but that came about after ppl were releasing them as good luck. If they've been doing that, then they are already here...just have to wait for the population explosion.

I've seen that video...it's a classic!!!

Steve, You'll love it here! If you need tips, you'll get em! This really is a family here...actually bly (who posted above) is my wife, so it's really is family...LOL.

Spring has finally sprung!! Actually looking foward to the rainy days of spring. Environment Canada is saying we are going to have a warmer and drier April/May/June, but we know how good they are at forecasting tomorrow's temps let alone a whole season! Hopefully the steelies will be running this weekend after today and tomorrow's rain!

Yep...CC taught me what I know about Steelheading. It's not an easy craft to get good at, but he's a great teacher! I caught my first fish without him just a week or so ago. Hope you took notes!

It was the least we could do for you. You're welcome.

Now that I think of it, I'm the same way...never say Rapala....I'll say shad rap too.

I just hang the camera around my neck and leave it inside my coat so it stays nice and warm...haven't had an accident as of yet.
