MJL...that pic of you casting is really cool!! That's one thing I'd love to try one day...takes a lot of skill to handle the line like that. Better luck on the fish next time...I'm sure we'll start seeing lots of fish in your next reports!

Bly and I had the honour of meeting up with Snog today for some Toronto Island Piking! We've wanted to fish with Snog since last fall....and his hilarious Salmon post...LOL. We had never specifically targeted Pike before and we were looking forward to a great day of learning and conversation....and hopefully catch a few fish!Anyhow, we agreed to meet at the ferry between 6 and 7am. Bly and I arrived at 6am, and put our lines in the water hoping for some early pike while waiting for Snog to arrive. No luck there. He arrived close to 7am. After quick introductions, we boarded the ferry. Since we were not really setup for pike, he was nice enough to give us some of his home made leaders...we put them on during the ride over and we were all set! Here's a picture of the great Toronto skyline...I never get tired of seeing this perspective of the city. We began our walking (and we did lots of that today!!), and arrived at a few spots that he's had luck at in the past. We cast a few lines...no action, so we moved on. The waters were still a bit stained from the storms that came through a few days ago, so visibility wasn't great. Snog then suggested we try a spot where he'd never heard of any pike coming out of...about 10 minutes later, I caught the first fish of the day...a nice "warm up" pike. We had great conversations...a lot of laughs, and with him as our guide, we followed him wherever he walked...except for here...apparently he needs to touch up on his reading skills....haha. We then tried a bunch of other spots with only a few follows to our credit. By 11:30am, we were getting pretty hungry and we stopped for some pizza slices on Center Island. We saw LOTS of BIG Carp swimming around in the shallows wherever we went...too bad I left my Carp gear at home....maybe the next trip down there, I'll give that a try. After lunch, we continued to try some spots....before long, Snog yells out that he has one on!! I take the camera out...getting ready to see what the Pike Master would pull out of the water. My adrenaline was pumping through my body....to see him pull this out of the water.... Ok...so not a pike...but it was a pretty decent sized bullhead....LOL. A little while later, Bly shouts "Fish on" and the battle begins! She has never caught a pike before so she was really hoping that this would be her first. She also got a new Fenwick rod for Christmas and was more than a little perturbed that it has NEVER caught her a fish yet...so this fish made it all more exciting for her! Finally, she lands what ends up being the biggest fish of the day....a very respectable 27" Pike. By now, Snog is getting worried that we were going to outfish him...he decides he needs every advantage he can get, so he wanders out in the water to get extra distance on his casts!! It must have worked, because a few minutes later, he brings in what turns out to be the smallest pike of the day....LOL. All in all, we had a great day out there! I was born in Toronto and have lived in the GTA my whole life...and this was the first time I had ever set foot on the Islands. Bly and I would like to thank Snog, for a great day chatting and fishing...we had an amazing time out there!! Hope we can do it again!

Welcome to the board!! Some of the best times I have fishing are with my 5 year old daughter. Introduced her to fishing last year and that's all we hear about now that the warmer weather is here. Looking forward to your reports!! We like to see pics too....

If you're lookin for weeds in the Kawarthas....Scugog has lots....LOL. Rented a boat there last weekend...bought the lake map from the marina...it said to follow weedlines. Couldn't quite do that cause all we found was weeds...never quite found the edge. The only fish we saw was a few large carp swimming around. Haven't really heard or seen many reports on Kawartha walleye yet either.

Bly and I went to one of our walleye hotspots to see if they are swimming close to shore yet. We saw a little increase in bait fish, so we decided to give it a try. On the last cast of the night, I threw a wally diver out there and began my retrieve. My retrieve suddenly stopped....just like when some of the walleye would hit it. I set the hook and the fish started to bolt. As I brought it in, it jumped out the water a few times...I was really hoping for my first eye of the season, but alas, I somehow ended up snagging a carp...on the underside of the mouth. It was a fair size....at 28". When we brought it in, it had this nasty looking wound...not sure if it's some kind of virus, effects of a parasite, injury from another fish? Anyhow...here's a pic....What do you think?

I'm a shore fisherman...for the stuff that I target, here's how I'm set up. Walleye - 8 to 10 pound mono (usually use crank baits #5 to #7 sizes, also medium sized spoons) Steelhead - 6 to 8 pound mono main line, with 4 to 6 pound flurocarbon leader (depends on clarity of water). Baits vary from small hooks using roe...also use small flys and jigs) Carp - 10 to 12 pound mono (good quality hair rig for boilies...braid line) I'm not married to using mono...just haven't tried others as of yet...I figure, why change if I'm having luck so far

Great report as usual! You should save all these reports and publish them...memoirs of northern adventures....I'd buy it!

Yeah...what Uncle Buck said... If fish are actively and agressively feeding then I find that bigger baits mean bigger fish. If fish are suspended and need enticing, then smaller may be the way to go. One thing to consider...I've found that if you fish with smaller bait, you can catch both big and smaller fish. Fish with only large bait, and you'll tend to get bigger ones and fewer smaller. So it can be a balance between number of fish caught and size.

Great report! I dont have all the bells and whistles yet. My bite indicator is my index finger...resting on the line while I sit very still....LOL. I haven't caught fish in a week now....maybe I'll have to head out tonite...as long as it's not raining too hard...haha. Thanks...great pic!

Wow....and that's what it's all about right there in this post!!! The smiles on your kid's faces is just priceless. Seeing the pride in your older daughters face...she'll remember that catch forever! And that look on your little one...man...nothing beats the pure smile of a child. Thanks for the report and pics...and sharing this outing with us....put a smile on my face that's for sure.

Nice work out there guys! I was just telling bly today that Tbayboy looked like a great guy to hook up with. Anyways, great report and pics....and as far as your theory goes...you just never know. I was in your exact position when I started trib fishing this past January. No matter what I did, I couldn't catch a fish to save my life. I'd be fishing a hole with 2 other guys....drifting the in the same place...same length leaders, same bait...they'd pull fish out...I wouldn't. I'd be in another spot...guys to my left and right pulling them out...me....nada!! My first 8 times I went out....one fish on....promptly lost it...LOL. Then, suddenly, my luck began to change....I predict the same for you....keep at it! It'll be worth it once the skunk is off!!!

Cool!!! That paddlefish looks amazing...congrats on your first catch. I also concur with solo....it's a quillback. The buffalo was a good guess, but when I looked at a few pics, the shape and position of the mouth says paddle.

Couldn't agree with you more Vance!!! My dad took the time to teach me how to fish when I was young. I'll never forget just hanging out with him on the docks pulling in panfish all day long. Here's a pic of my two brothers and my dad...back around 1975. Now that I'm older...my dad is no longer with us, but I love spending time with my kids fishing. I want them to have the same kind of memories that I have growing up.... Me and my youngest....her first fish of 2007.... My teenaged daughter....

Famous last words.... "Oh come on...what could possibly happen????" or, you know disaster is about to happen when someone yells excitedly.... "Hey everyone....watch this!!!!"
