Oh man Jason....I'm very sorry to hear about this. We were just talking the other night about how sick he was. Terrible news, but I think you did the right thing. If you need to get out fishing or whatever to take your mind off things, just give me a call. Cliff & Carole

I'm NOT an expert on shore fishing for salmon, but after having a medium action rod just break on me after fighting 3 salmon and landing 2, I had a better idea of what I preferred. Mind you, I did have to be a bit heavy handed on the fish because of structure with lots of potential for the line to get tangled. Our local tackle store had some advice for me on this one....because I, like you, didn't have a lot of money to spend on this. I was looking for something that would be stronger...so a medium heavy rod was where I started. I was also fishing with a 6.5 footer before and wanted a little longer to help in getting casts further. I ended up with a Shimano Sojourn medium heavy rod, fast tip. This is a Graphite composite rod (not the fancy IM7 or the like)...so the sensitivity isn't great, but if you are chucking spoons, believe me, you know when they hit. (at least the ones I've hooked). The best thing is that this rod cost $40...but got a deal on it and walked away with it only costing $30. My luck has been with little cleos in 2/3 to 3/4 oz size. Glow in the dark has worked the best for me because I fish primarily at night. You'll likely have to go to a tackle shop to get them. Good luck out there!!!

Awesome stuff!! I've been waiting for this one and you didn't disappoint. Absolutely beautiful country up there...and you managed to capture it. Thanks!

Wow...what a beautiful fish! Great job out there!

Hey!!! Great job! You have to start somewhere...congrats on the first pikes. You'll get into more...just wait until fall!!

We have a net that we bought at BPS....I believe the opening is 30 inches and the handle extends to 8 feet...perfect for pier fishing at any pier I've seen

That's a beauty honey hole you have for Carp there! You're one of the lucky ones. Great work for such a short time out there.

LOL fishtat2....I'm not going out tonight...my mom is coming over for a visit. I'm gonna have to talk to her about the timing of her visits....you know...cant come during the salmon run, the fall steelhead run, the trout opener, bass opener, walleye opener, muskie opener and anytime those seasons are open. So I'm thinking Feb would be a good time...hehe. Someone once told me that if you are not losing tackle catching salmon and trout, then you're not doing it right.... -
Listen to Silvio!! He knows Steelies!! My first rod was an 11'6" as well...I used it...had moderate success...thought that since I'm used to throwing 6 to 7 foot rods that it was plenty long enough. Well...that one broke on me and I bought a 13 footer, and I have to tell you, it's MUCH better...especially to fight them in closed quarters. Good luck!

Stories like this is what tests your sanity!! I'd be furious if that happened to me...especially if I didn't live in the same country!! Jeez...I hope it all gets worked out soon...although it wont soften this experience.

I use a leader because I use power pro line...a non-stretch line. I'll put a mono or fluro leader on it to absorb some of the shock when they change directions suddenly or take off on a run. Just a little extra insurance so that the sudden change in direction/speed doesn't snap my line. Also, they do have teeth... -
Damn!!! I have a few phone calls to make...I have a bunch of bungee cords coming and a deal with dempsters on the bread.

Hmmm....crappie....salmon.... crappie on one hand...salmon on the other..... Where are your priorities man???? LOL

LOL Glen...had me laughing out loud at the office!! I dont have a boat, but have seen people...good and bad at boat launches. A boat is in my future at some point...I just pray that you are not around to witness it....would hate to have it featured here on OFC.....LOL

Great report! I haven't hooked into a huge one yet... For me and these powerful fish, the fight is the awesome part...landing them is a little anti-climactic. First you have the heart stopping hit...then the adrenaline pumping runs and jumps...then the not knowing where the fish is until it surfaces....then it's all pooped out and you bring it in....LOL. -
Breathtaking shots!! Beautiful blue waters.

I see lots of awesome sunrise and sunset shots...but since Bly and I fish a lot at night, I thought I'd share a few pics of our night time excursions.... These were all taken with a cheap $150 Kodak Easy Share camera. I just bought a new one, which is MUCH better, so I hope for some better quality pics in the future. Here's one of bly fishing by fog and moonlight....
-
THe luck cant last forever..so I'm thinking the sturgeon will leap during the fight, hit me in the head...I'll be knocked out and it will pull me around the water for a while before bly saves me. Yep...i'm sure that's what'll happen....hehe.
-
Ahh...they were little fish, but it's better than sitting in your living room trying to catch them....believe me, I've tried....LOL. Well...not YOUR living room, but my living room....hehe. Hope the ribs get better soon...fighting a muskie would be rather difficult I imagine!!
-
Wow...breathtaking pictures!!! Sounded like an amazing time up there and glad to see you managed to get in a few hours of fishing. Wich scenery like that, I wouldn't care if I caught anything at all!! Great report...looking forward to part 2!!!

Someone told me tonight that the Salmon are still about 1km off shore. He says since water temps are beginning to drop to give it another week or two.

Wow...what pound test is the bungee??? LOL

Welcome to the board jesse! Only caught pike and bass? Jeez...I'm happy catching any fish larger than oh say...and sunfish...LOL. I'm not in your area, but I'm sure someone will chime in....your offer to take someone out in your boat is a generous one. Stick around, post your reports...I'm looking forward to the steelie posts!!
