All depends on time of year. Right now it's downriggers. In the spring we get 'em off boards, dipseys, casting and long lines. I think their rep as poor fighters comes from the guys who are trolling with heavy gear for salmon, they are certainly no chinook. They are a lot of fun on fairly light tackle and they sure do put up a good fight. They're a powerful fish.
  4. That looks like a fun weekend. Nice smallie!
  5. Nice fish Lew. Figure 8 strikes are great, except the ones that scare the crap out of you when they dart out from under the boat or you don't see them coming.

  10. not sure about doe lake in particular but a lot of the algonquin lakes have populations of smallies in them. you should be able to catch them in your canoe. the trout, you're going to need riggers or still fish (jig) for them.
  11. some guys love 'em. me, i can't catch a thing on 'em.
  12. great answer Paul, nothing really more to add to this thread! LOL
  13. the poly rope is just fine and in my opinion a better option since you always need rope, this way it can have a dual purpose. straps, not so much. google/learn the trucker's hitch knot and you will be able to secure your canoe atop your vehicle as tight as you want quickly and easily. a good test to see if it's tight enough; if you move the vehicle when you try to move the canoe atop the roof it's good and not going anywhere. i've car topped canoes many many times across long distances. tie the rope to the two bumper support each front and rear of the car and for extra security, run a ratcheting strap across the middle of the canoe, through the vehicle (rear doors if 4 door). to eliminate the strap from humming at speed, twist it.
  14. Yeah, you guys really screwed that up didn't ya.

you should have no problems tying 20. I tie 60. I use a uni-to-uni to join 50lb braid to 50lb fluoro although "they" say you should be using a different knot for lines of different diameters. on the business end, make a perfection loop, and attach a snap or split ring.
  17. there's no muskies on the french, turnaround and go home.
  18. what are you lookin for crazyhook i also use dreamhost and they are ok but do go down on occasion. awardspace.com is a decent FREE host and if I remember right have templates for quick and dirty webpages.
  19. Cut the hooks! A 30"er is under the 36" minimum in the Kawarthas so you have no choice.

  25. not a mechanic but i play one on tv. i've seen a few chrysler and chrysler/mitsu products with lifter tick. in some cases they've come out with re-designed lifters. not sure how mechanically inclined you are but you can remove the lifters, clean them and re-install. worked on my last talon. make sure you're topped up on oil and like suggested try 10w40 in the summer should cure it. lucas oil stabilizer will help too. i don't think it is pinging either. pull a plug, see if it's white, that'll tell you if you are leaning out and/or burning coolant. an oil pressure gauge would really help in this situation and not the one on your dash either. See if your pressure is up to spec when the engine is hot.
