  1. The insulated ones are on sale too. Forgot to mention the free tackle bag.
  2. Thanks Landry! I was in the market for new rainwear. Free shipping and had the items sent to the UPS Store in Lewiston NY for pick up. Total was $215. That is an unbelievable deal.
  3. Right, 12 people. I think you'll have a hard time finding a cabin quite that large at most resorts. O'Sullivan's cabins sleep either 8 or 4. If you went there you'd have to take one of each.
  4. Roe goo is potent. Anyone ever try and clean it off fabric? It's impossible. It's evil, evil stuff.
  5. Wax on, wax off grasshopper..... Use ancient stealth technique known as crouching tiger-leaping steelhead. And most important, you must become one with the fish.
  6. Not a big fan of the Spahr reels Brian.
  7. Nakina's not that much further than Hornepayne, the area you were asking about. Seriously, I believe you should at least consider O'Sullivan's. It's exactly what you're looking for. Can't stress this enough LOL! If you're only doing one trip a year don't sell yourselves short by limiting your driving time by an hour or two. Another option that looks intriguing at least to me is Northern Woods Lodge on the south end of Long Lake just N/W of Terrace Bay. It's relatively new and seems to offer a good variety of fish as well as nice new cabins and boats/motors. Someone on the board here posted a report from this lodge ealier this year and I filed it away for future reference. http://www.northernwoodslodge.com/
  8. So your previous lodge was in Geraldton? If you're willing to drive just a bit further to Nakina O'Sullivans Rainbow is an OUTSTANDING drive to location. Huge, beautiful fish filled lake and outstanding lodge. They have a boat in outpost camp on Dunn island that's fantastic. Walleye fishing is on par with many fly in lakes. On the plus side there's also lakers and pike. Highly recommended! http://www.osullivansrainbow.com/ Also in Nakina is Lower Twin Lakes Lodge. Upper and Lower Twin lakes combined are over 15km in length, so it's quite large. Camp is spartan but clean. As far as the fishing goes check the board in early Oct for my report. I'm headed up there at the end of Sept to try it for the first time. The big advantage with Lower Twin, it's EXTREMELY cheap. If you're on a budget their prices are hard to beat. http://www.lowertwinlakes.com/
  9. Good idea. A Rubbermaid Action Packer would work well too.
  10. The bearings can likely be tweaked so you're reel will run better. Removing them is the difficult part. Assuming you can remove them a lot of guys will gently boil them to remove all the old grease and crud. Or soak them in electrical contact cleaner or something similar. Once they're degreased either a couple drops of sewing machine oil or soak in kerosene then reinstall. Do not add grease of any type. Chances are your reel will spin a lot better if you do this.
  11. Out of the 3 you mentioned the Sheffield for sure. But didn't you say you had an in with Raven? If you do imo the Raven Vectra SST is even better. I agree with trying to pick up a used Islander for 2-250 though. They're the Honda Civics of float reels. Never let you down. If you don't have an in with Raven drop this guy an email. He's selling brand new Raven reels for 200 bucks as well as a bunch of other stuff: http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-hobbies-crafts-Float-Fishing-gear-sale-just-in-time-W0QQAdIdZ313894930 If you're lucky he'll ship the stuff for you.
  12. Like venereal diseases that havn't been seen since the conquest of Peru. Careful down there.
  13. I'm not a fan of hi vis myself. Many guys who run hi vis will also run a shot tippet of low vis line directly under their float so there's no hi vis below the float, then another micro swivel, then their tippet of choice. To me this is dumb as it means more knots and potential weak points. I prefer to keep things simple and will only run a low vis green mainline. Float and shot are all on my mainline, then a tiny black ant swivel and whatever tippet I'm using. Many guys will say they like the hi vis 'cause it allows them to see where they're drifting. I personally don't get that as I'm always watching my float intently. Maybe one day when my eyes grow dim and I can't follow my float as easily, maybe then I'll see the merit. I think hi vis is JUST another fad in the floatfishing world. Seems to be the "in" thing to use 'cause it looks so cool on your reel LOL!
  14. It's funny how an idea catches on, rumours are spread, people accept it as fact and pretty soon everyone's doing it without really questioning why. This is certainly the case with using backing on modern float reels. It's absolutely unneccesary. It may only be required on older aerial style reels where the spool is constructed with pins. Straight mono on a reel of that style "may' end up warping the pins. It is not needed on todays reels that have proper machined spools. The only reason backing may be needed is because many of todays reels are built with ridiculously deep spools. If you were to fill them right up with mono you'd use 5 miles of line. I have been fishing with a center pin reel now for well over 30 years. In all that time I have never once had a steelhead take me into my backing. So for quite a while now instead of backing on my deep spooled reels I've been constructing an arbor for the spool. For a long time I simply used a level 4wt fly line (weighs nothing) then spooled a coyple hundred yards of mainline on top of that. Recently I've been buying adhesive backed cork at auto supply stores. Cut a strip to size and stick it around your spool. Bingo, instant lightweight arbor. I DESPISE using dacron, or fly line backing as is the norm with most guys these days. Simple reason being it adds a tremendous amount of weight to the reel especially once it gets wet and absorbs water, which it obviously does 5 minutes into your day of fishing. The added weight in the spool is an annoyance as it will impede startup in slow water. As far as which mainline to use I'm a big fan of 12lb Raven. (or any other high end mono with a similar diameter) It's supple enough even at 12lb's and handles and casts well. It also has the abrasion resistance I require as I quite often slide split shots and floats around either stretching them or condensing them depending on the water I'm fishing. Bear in mind it's your tippet that the fish will see, not your mainline. The heavier mainline is used simply because it handles and wears better. It also allows you to bump your tippet up to 8 or 10lb if you're fishing heavy water in big flows...
  15. Dated this psycho chick named Barb back in the day. Was relieved to dump her and I've been happily Barbless ever since. Barbless gets two thumbs up from me.
  16. You know you're always welcome buddy. Did you know your bro is meeting me up in Nakina at the end of the month?
  17. Been making a variation of that for years. I usually marinate the fish in italian style salad dressing first then grill on the bbq and baste with a maple based bbq sauce. They don't take long, they're ready when the sauce caramelizes. Super yummy but very rich.
  18. You know....that could maybe be arranged.
  19. Flowers River in Labrador for atlantics and brookies. Sutton River float trip in Polar Bear Provincial Park for brook trout (that one's already booked ) Situk River in Alaska for steelhead. Bum around Patagonia and Argentina in the winter months with a fly rod and fish for giant sea run browns and overgrown rainbows. That's just the tip of the iceberg LOL!
  20. They're fantastic! I don't mind giving up this info...Ermine lake right at the border of the park near the west gate has very good splake fishing. How you access the lake is an entirely different matter though LOL!
  21. No they ship to Canada, it's just a lot more expensive. It's pretty painless setting up an account for dropoff at a mailbox depot at a neighboring US border city though. Takes 2 mins to set up an account. If you ever cross the border for any reason just stop in and pick up your packages.
  22. Sierra Trading Post has Powell SSL and TMX fly rods on sale. There's an additional discount that ends tomorrow dropping the prices even further. It really is an amazing deal. Couldn't resist so I bought 2 LOL! Sierra is shipping the rods to the UPS store in Lewiston for me as well. I'll pick 'em up when I cross the border to fish. You can get the additional discount by clicking here: http://email.sierratradingpost.com/dm?id=FF74526B692ADB3BF255549843B57A7B Anyhow, just thought I'd pass this along.
