  1. as far as I know, if you drive onto the lake with anthing other than a boat, be it a car, an ATV or even a snowmobile, your insurance stops at the shoreline, I could be wrong though
  2. My 7' medium action rod gets by far the most use, and my Sedona gets used for everything from ice fishing to trout and salmon stream fishing to walleye and bass in the weeds, I have caught musky on it as well and it has been flawless both with braid and mono/fluoro
  3. well done, I love catching smallies on fly gear, it makes the fight that much better!
  4. I was there a few times last winter with nothing to show for it, I saw a couple people pull some small pike out about 50 feet from me, but that was the extent of the action, I may try it out soon though, it is pretty close to home.
  5. sounds like a good day, nice brown by the way, I have never caught one through the ice!
  6. I dont know of any website for information on the ice road. I was up there on new years eve when it was +6 and there were people driving back and forth to and from the island, to me that is just nuts. There was even some crazy guy driving around on the ice off the road and plowing through foot deep slush on top of the ice! there was 6" of ice everywhere that we drilled. I am not guaranteeing anything obiously, but I would say that the ice road should be alright, but like you said, ice can never be considered 100% safe. There is a small bait shop and a marina right there, so I am sure that they would have a better idea than I would, and your niece should have a better idea aswell, if she hasn't braved it then I might be nervous. My best advice would be to call the marina (705) 437-2533 or bait shop and ask them though, they will have up to date conditions, also see if your niece knows anyone who has the information, a neighbour or something. 7. Hey Cudz I was just looking at the regs the other day about the same question and found this: "A fishing line must not have more than four hooks attached. A hook includes a single-pointed or multiple-pointed hook on a common shaft but does not include a snagger or spring gaff. The number of hooks includes any single-pointed or multiple-pointed hooks that are part of a lure." http://www.mnr.gov.o...L02_165347.html so I guess that the answer is 4 in total I dont know anything about ice conditions other than at Virginia Beach, which had plenty of ice last weekend, so I imagine by now that it is really safe out there, last weekend there were people crazy enough to be driving their cars around out there! Daryl
  8. Glad to hear that you are alright, I dont know you, but it is always scary to hear about people going through the ice, I pray that it is not me one of these days! Obviously you know how to stay calm and rescue yourself when things go wrong, so good on you for remaining calm and getting out of there. You may have saved my life with this post, I was thinking of heading out to IBP this week, but after hearing about this I may put it off for a couple of weeks. Thanks again for the post, and I hope that it never happens to you again! Daryl
  9. I just sent you a PM, I have never been to VB, but would be willing to give it a shot if it is safe that is, have you been out there this year?
  10. That sounds like an awesome day or 2 of fishing. I only met Bob once, at a sportsmans show, but he was super nice, and made time for everyone who wanted a word with him. I am a big fan of his show, he is one of the few fisherman on TV who dont try to make a 2 lb bass seem like a 6 lb bass! He seems like a really genuine guy, and from what the other members have posted here obviously this guy has made a good impression on most of the people that he has met! I had no idea that he was so involved in the charity work though, usually if a TV fisherman is involved in charity work, they do nothing on their shows but pump themselves up because of it, definitely another credit to Bob's character that he doesnt go around flaunting and making himself out to be a hero, even if he really is!
  11. Thanks Terry, much appreciated. If I dont see you out there tomorrow, have a safe and happy new year!
  12. Hi Everyone, I was planning on heading out to Cooks Bay on Friday, to try my hand at some perch fishing. I dont have a lot of experience on the bay, or on Simcoe in general, but I know that Lake Simcoe can be quite dangerous, both during soft and hard water seasons. Given the warm temps and rain in the forecast I was wondering if it will be a wise idea to head out there, because of ice conditions, and also because of slush and water on top of the ice. We would be walking so that helps a little, but it still makes me a little nervous to head out not knowing exactly how the ice is, and because the ice has just begun to form and now its going to be melting. So my main questions are to those who have been out there in the past few days. - How much ice is there, and do you think will it be safe on friday? I would likely be heading out from Gilford or Keswick, possibly Roaches Pt. but going out that far north on the new ice might be sketchy. - How much snow is on top of the ice to turn into a slushy mess? - If anyone wants to join myself and a friend of mine, you are definitely welcome to come or meet us out there, either PM me or just reply to this post if interested. any help or advice that you might be able to give would be greatly appreciated, and I hope to see you out there!!
  13. wow that is a thick steelhead, well done man, I am going out tomorrow to see what I can catch!
  14. Hey I noticed that you are from Whitby, so am I! Gagnons in Oshawa has a decent deal on a Frabil right now, I wish I had the money to grab one! http://www.store.gagnonsports.com/index.php?product=FRAB-6000 I was in there the other day, and it looks like a decent set-up. Good luck! I hope to be on the hard water in the new year!
  15. Nice Fish and good post! I was thinking about going out this morning, but the cold kept me indoors! I need to man up and get out there tomorrow!
  16. lol this place gets nasty pretty quick! One thing I dont understand is, with a salary cap system, what difference does it make who owns the team? you can only spend x amount of money
  17. haha good point! on a side note, I heard that they caught the dude in Scarberia I believe
  18. Clearly the Leafs are back at it again tonight, 3-0 now, after Edmonton scored with like 2 seconds left! It is really unbeleafable how bad this team is playing right now, they have a few half decent players, they shouldnt be this bad. I think at some point you have to look to the coaching staff and start to ask the tough questions!
  19. wow, nice eye, I cant beleive the size of the last (well second last) meal that guy ate!
  20. Nice fish, I need to expand my tackle in my hunt for rainbows! I usually stick to flies roe or worms, but lures definitely seem like more fun!
  21. I wish they would hurry up and build the new nukes at Darlington! I need job security
  22. you had quite the year, congrats on all of the gorgeous fish!
  23. I remember catching that little guy, big Browns seem few and far between for me lately, but I have caught nice sized Lakers down there too, late in the season, a couple of years ago. Let me know when you are able, we could meet up for some late season Steelhead, there is another place that I have done well at late in the season too if you are better before December 31st! Take care Daryl
  24. I went out yesterday at around noon for a couple of hours to try to get my first Rainbow of the fall down at a local creek, I haven't really been out too much lately, so I saw the opportunity and ran with it. As I walked up to the creek I remembered last fall when I met MJL for the first time at this exact spot and talked for a long time about fishing and OFC, I wondered how he was doing, and hoped that he was alright. The weather was a little chilly, with the wind being the main problem, it kept gusting, pulling my slack line and messing up my drifts. I started out with Roe that I had just tied up, both under a float and then bottom bouncing, without any luck, went on for about an hour and a half of washing roe bags in the current. A couple of people came down to the hole and started fishing beside me, usually I dont really like it when people invade my fishing spot, but these people had respect, fished downstream of me and we didnt cross lines or get tangled once. They left about a half an hour after they got there. I switched to a wooly bugger, and again, nothing after about half an hour, so I switched to a red small power worm. On my third drift my float went under quickly, I set the hook thinking it must be bottom again (the stretch of creek is famous for shopping carts...). I connected with something which I momentarily thought was a snag, it didnt really move much, and then I started to feel the head shakes, and the fish slowly coming up from the deep hole. I saw the fishes greenish grey back and pink chrome sides as it thrashed its head on the surface a few times before retreating back to the depths and out of sight. About 15 minutes of a fairly sluggish fight ensued, until I tried to get him up close to shore and he peeled off about 30 feet of line, thats the kind of fight that I was expecting! A couple more decent runs and I had beached him in the shallow rapids behind the pool, taken the hook out (it was hooked very lightly) and taken my camera out for a quick pic, I would have liked to have gotten a couple pics holding the fish, but I was fishing alone. He ended up being about 6-7 lbs with nice colours and a small kipe forming. A quick revival in the current and he swam away really strong. I was glad that the day didnt end in a skunking, because I had to go shortly, and it wasnt looking quite so good for a while there!
