  1. I did remove the prop, and I couldnt really tell where the oil was leaking from, it did look to be coming from in around the propshaft and dripping onto the lower wall of the housing. I am almost 100% that it is lower unit gear oil, it didnt have a distinct smell (there was so little of it) and also, on my motor I beleive that the exhaust comes from 2 holes at the rear of the shaft and not from around the prop, but I could be wrong about that. I have never had an issue of unburnt 2 cycle oil dripping before
  2. I have a 1979 johnson 9.9 that was slowly leaking lower unit oil from around the prop, only a very small amount, and it stopped after a couple of days, there is still lots of oil in the lower unit. I noticed it after the last time that I parked the boat/motor, and noticed a small drip from the bottom of the prop onto the driveway. There isnt much oil that leaked out, it was dark, and I havent drained the lower unit yet, but it isnt leaking anymore. I am guessing that it is the prop seal that has failed, or is failing slowly (it is older than I am!), but I am not sure whether it is that or not, it just seemed like the most logical explaination. I was hoping that one of the board members might have some insight into the issue, or experience with a similar situation, I have next to no experience when it comes to outbard repairs. I was wondering if the prop seal can be replaced without removing the lower unit?, or if someone thinks it might think that it might be a different seal that is leaking? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
  3. Nice fish, I too have the urge to get a brown this fall, I am almost sick of Salmon!
  4. I have been too nervous to go out on Simcoe in my 14' tinnie with a 9.9, be very very careful if you do go. The waves on Simcoe get ridiculous, and a small boat is dangerous in tough conditions. I would stick to Cooks bay, on the leeward shore, or the rivers, as others have mentioned, dont go out into the main lake, Lake Simcoe is not a joke.
  5. great report, it sounds like you have had quite the summer
  6. Well done man, those are all some big smallies, and that sounds like an interesting idea for a little tournament, I might have to try something like that in the future. Oh and you guys are quite brave to go out in a tornadoe, especially on Simcoe! I am nervous to take my 14' tinnie and 9.9 out there, I imagine that tornadoes like that can come up at any time, and the closer you are to shore the more they swirl! Daryl
  7. That is a good point, you seem to have pissed off a few people here! if people would have read your post they would understand what it is all about. I cant beleive that the guy you talked to didnt think that was wrong, its not fishing to line a fish, its cheating. I have used marshmallows, and I have observed fish actually moving over to hit them, just last night I caught a 12" rainbow on a mallow fished on bottom. At the same time, I am sure that a certain percentage of the fish swim into it, or swim into the line by accident, but to do it on purpose isnt right. The past 2 days I have been Salmon fishing twice, and I have caught no salmon, the fish were right in front of me, I could have easily flossed them, but I chose not to, actually I much prefer to catch trout anyways!
  8. Oh and please, no more messages asking me where I was fishing, I said what I used, and the technique I used, but people prying into exact spots definitely deters me from posting catches like this!
  9. It can be a challenge, with trees and obstacles in the water, especially without waders to chase after them with! If you ever want to give it a shot and you are around the Whitby area let me know, I think I could get you into some fish.
  10. I agree, sometimes that is what happens, they have a tendancy to swim around with their mouths open. I havent actually caught any on white ones, I use chartreuse and orange. But on 2 seperate occasions I have watched Salmon actually move 3-4 feet over to take a marshmallow, so I would say there is a little from column a and a little from column b. To clarify though, none of my fish were force fed, I will let a fish sit 3 feet in front of me undisturbed, to properly and ethically fish a pool.
  11. Had a few spare hours yesterday and today, so I managed to get out for some Salmon action 2 days in a row! These past couple weeks seem to have been pretty good to me when it comes to Salmon. Yesterday was a little slow, only 2 fish on and only 1 fish landed in about 6 hours of fishing, but the water was really muddy and high, the fish seemed more interested in running than holding in deep pools, we also hit about 4 different spots on 2 different tribs. Here is the one from yesterday Today I only got out for about an hour, but managed 1 fish landed and 2 on, definitely a little more action, the water had gone down a little and was a nice green colour. Probably the biggest Salmon that I have caught this year, but I forgot my OFC sign for team 10! oh well, I am sure there will be bigger ones to come. The fish from today, 25 lbs and just under 40" A face only a mother could love After a bit of reviving, both fish swam away so that they can hopefully spawn and help future Salmon come up the creeks. Both fish were caught on Marshmallows, drifted on bottom with a couple of split shot. ps- thanks to the board members who helped me out with adding these larger pics to my posts, it has been most helpful!
  12. Awesome Hawg, it has been too long since I have fished my favourite Hali-area lakes, I think its time to get back up there asap!
  13. Nice fish, and good post, its nice to see good people get rewarded by the fishing gods
  14. Nice fish, that one you got is pure chrome, I havent got one like that yet this year!
  15. I dont really think it makes a huge difference to most fish, especially if you are just using a snap/snapswivel, of course I wouldnt reccomend one for trout or salmon fishing in clear creeks on light line. A heavy leader might deter a fish in clear water, just like heavy line would, but sometimes it is necessary, I wish that I had used a leader while I was ripping bucktails for walleye last week, I could have landed a huge musky that took my jig and bit through my 20lb powerpro, I had him on for about 10 minutes and thought I might be ok, but was proven otherwise. Also if the bait that you are throwing is weedless, a leader/swivel will usually make it pick up just as many weeds as if it wasnt weedless, but for throwing rapalas you should be fine.
  16. I always wonder too about this issue. From what I have read on the issue, and what I have heard that fish have a sort of acidic mouth and body fluids, which aids in the deterioration of the hooks, meaning that it wont take a year to rust the hooks out, I have heard that it only takes a few days in some cases. Of course it depends greatly on the type of hook you are using aswell, regular hooks deteriorate rapidly, whereas stainless hooks will take much longer to break down, thankfully we dont have too many stainless hooks around here being that there isnt any salt water. Also after alot of thrashing hooks seem to work themselves loose after a while, I think the fish that you lost will be fine, and there is a good chance that the fish has already freed itself
  17. I would suspect that it might be the battery, and quite possibly an issue with current being drawn off the battery slowly. I have had issues before with batteries and alternators, I would say that if you had it idling for half an hour with no issues, your alternator should be ok. Charge the battery and take it to ctc so that they can load test it, sometimes a battery can hold 12.7 volts, but under load it cant do the job, so using their diagnostic machine would be your best bet. Oh,and be very very careful if you are going to try and check the fluid level in your battery, if it is a non-serviceable battery dont touch it! and if you can service it, beware of sulphuric acid, dont get it on anything that you want to keep. Good luck
  18. Thanks man, I thought that might be the answer, because there is the option of entering a URL for the pictures which may be the answer to all of my problems! Yeah it was a pretty good day, not the best that I have had, but definitely not the worst!
  19. Oh yeah, if anyone could be so kind as to let me know how I can post bigger pictures it would be much appreciated, I spent almost an hour resizing these stupid pics so that all 5 would upload, but I see some posts that are full of nice big pictures, I wonder what I am missing.....
  20. I decided to go down to a small east ontario trib of Lake O that I know of, to try my luck for some Trout and Salmon this morning. I tied up about a dozen roe bags and headed for the creek. I decided to leave the waders in the car, because it was almost 30 degrees at 9am and just getting hotter, usually I dont like to go salmon fishing without waders, because so often you need to chase a running fish up or downstream, but I figured that, a few lost fish would be worth being fairly comfortable all day. My first cast had not even hit the bottom when I felt a strong hit, set the hook, and I am into my first Salmon of the day, not a bad way to start! After about 15 minutes I corralled the small male to the shore, took a quick picture and released him after about 5 minutes reviving him. 15 minutes later I am into another fish, another male, this one a little bigger, he gave me a really good fight, and almost ended up in a brush pile downstream, but I managed to pull him back and get him up on the bank aswell. About an hour went by before I had another fish on, it ended up being a nice sized male, then shortly after that I got a 6" rainbow on a roe bag almost as big as him! Another couple of hours, after running out of roe and switching to marshmallows and a couple of fish on broken off before I hooked into this decent sized female Shortly after that I switched to a wooly bugger under a float to get this nice male, lots of jumps, lots of runs, about a 20 minute fight. All in all it was a good day down at the stream, I managed 6 fish landed, and 3 broken off, a couple foul hooked which I broke off on purpose, it seemed like a roe bag with floaters in it was the hot bait today, once I ran out the action really slowed down noticeably, but I still managed a few fish on other baits. I was happy with the fact that I landed a good portion of fish that I had on even without waders. All fish were released and swam off strong after some reviving, most of them actually sat about 3 feet in front of me for a few minutes before taking off. Hopefully this is just the start of a productive fall!
  21. I have the Arbor model and I havent had any issues with it. I was a little leery about getting a Pflueger, I have always used Shimano, but since it was a gift I figured I would give it a shot. I put 20lb powerpro on it and it has held up extremely well, the drag is smooth, and it has not skipped a beat. I have caught Musky up to 40", fair sized Pike, and average sized bass in thick weeds. I am going to try it out for Trout and Salmon this fall which should be a little more of a test. I have noticed that as advertised it seems to cast pretty far, compared to my Sedona, (maybe an extra 15-20 feet, but that could have something to do with the rod aswell (it is a med action Pflueger Arbor rod). The only negative I could possibly talk about is the fact that it only came with 1 spool, and that it has a fairly slow gear ratio (I think its 4.2:1) which makes it hard to reel in a bait at warp speed to get another cast out, or to avoid a seagull. Having said that, the slower ratio is nice for slowly working crankbaits or spinnerbaits. Other than that I have been pretty impressed with it.
  22. Holy crap, that one had been eating pretty good! thats one of the fattest smallmouth I have ever seen
  23. I saw on a fishing show on WFN that fish always face into the wind, unless they are in moving water ie a river. I was wondering what any other board members think about it, I kind of find it interesting. I believe this is true, because it makes sense, the waves are coming from the direction of the wind, and the fish are facing into the waves. Anything in the water is being slowly pushed to the windward side of the lake, and so the fish in the lake are fighting against the current produced by the wind. The wind/wave action often pushes the weeds in the direction of the wind, so to swim through the weeds is easier if they are going upwind. Having said all of this, I doubt that the wind matters quite so much if you are fishing very deep water, but I dont know. Also, I dont really know which direction is best to present to a fish, if you come up from behind them with will they spook? or if you pull a lure straight at them will they spook? is it better to pull a lure sideways across a fishes field of vision?
  24. The second pic definitely has the better flies, the egg sucking leech can be deadly, I would recomend getting some different colours, and also some plain black ones.
  25. That is a monster brown, good work, I cant wait until they are in the creeks, and we can all fight eachother for a decent spot on the bank! By the sounds of some of the other posts people are definitely angry when it comes to sharing a fishing spot!
