  1. A cool thing I saw recently wast a bracket to place the net into after hooking a musky. I was watching an old Steve Heiting video, and after netting a fish he would snap the handle of the net into a bracket, it seemed really convenient. As far as a folding net when fishing alone goes I would make sure that the net is ready to go when I got in the boat, as I would not want to unfold a stowmaster while trying to fight a large fish. Folding nets are great to use with two people in the boat, but if you are fishing alone how much room do you really need?
  2. Nice ski. You are catching the fever. A bigger net and more lures are in your future
  3. On the way back to the launch at bluffers last night we came across two things that we found interesting. One guy was out in a bass boat apparently running and gunning. Another guy was anchored in about 30ft of water jigging. Were they after bass? Just wondering as I had not seen it before.
  4. Nice fish...not sure about the bass fishing though. Maybe a distraction on a hot calm day.
  5. St Croix is having a really good sale on their Legend Tournament rods right now. Thinking I could beef up the arsenal for my trip to the Northwest Angle I ordered a classic jerk from them. I forgot to check what company was doing the shipping. The rod arrived today and the fees were almost 80 bucks. I could have bought it here for cheaper, and it would have been the new model. Just a reminder to all of you. Check to make sure that anything you order from the states is shipped USPS, otherwise you may get screwed. Rant over.
  6. Cool. I'll bring some worm harnesses and some bucktail jigs, along with the usual cranks, jerks and spoons.
  7. Lots of wifi available in Europe. Search ahead for locations of free wifi in cities that you will be traveling. As was previously mentioned coffee shops can be a good place to find wifi.
  8. those perch look almost as big as the bass. Well done.
  9. Sorry to hear. It seems like your luck can only get better.
  10. Thanks for sharing. That put a smile on my face.
  11. I'm heading on my annual camping/male bonding/fishing trip with my buddy a week from today. This year we are heading up to cedar lake in Algonquin Park. Just wondering if anyone has any fishing tips. We are willing to do a 2-3 day canoe loop.
  12. Nice Job. I would advise you to only pic up a few lures that are proven producer. If you buy a new lure, make sure you know it will catch fish in the body of water you are fishing. Do not walk in to a tackle store and buy a lure because it looks good. Having said that my advice is useless, as when you truly gt hooked your spend your season fishing, and your off season collecting lures.
  13. I would advise using mono leaders. For pike you only need 40 or 50 pound leaders and can tie your own leaders pretty easily.
  14. We are looking for the quickest way. I am sure that there are a bunch of great detours and places we could visit, but the focus on this trip is fishing the lake of the woods. The sooner we get back the sooner we can musky hunt back on the home water.
  15. Why not? There are sea run rainbows, what would stop a brookie from doing the same?
  16. Anyone have recommendations on where to stop along the way? We are crossing over at Sarnia. Hoping to leave on Thursday at noon and get to the lake by Saturday, although would not be disappointed if we got there Friday night.
  17. If there are people out there consistently targeting and catching Musky they are keeping it on the down low. My guess is that they are out there, but they are so few and far between that the amount of angling hours required to catch them would hardly make it worth your while. I have toyed with the idea of running a large rainbow crank bait off the downriggers while salmon fishing this summer.
  18. I have no doubt that with some effort, and the assistance of a lawyer that charge would be overturned, but not many of us have the resources in terms of time and money to fight such a charge.
  19. I started a conversation about this regarding Musky that are under the slot size earlier this year. There is a lot of room for interpretation in the regulations. As a result different CO's seem to interpret the regs in different ways. The fact that in Saugeen if you are seen taking a picture of an OOS bass you will get charged, but if you do the same thing in Kawarthas you will be fine. In the interest of not getting away from the topic too much I will not say any more about it. My problem with the video is the way the bass were treated. They had a net, net the fish, unhook the fish in the net and release the fish from the net. Letting fish role around on the rocks is not cool.
  20. In the OSS bass video I believe that the anglers had the intention of targeting steelhead. While they could have moved on once they caught a few bass, and definitely should have according to the regs, I think educating them on what your responsability as a angler is when you are repeatedly catching OOS species. One of the big problems I have with the video was with how they were treating the fish once the were caught. Letting a fish, especially an OOS fish role around on the rocks is going to severely increase the stress that it is being put under, increasing the chance that the fish will die. In the video they had a net that they could have used to scoop the fish, unhook them in the net and release them back without taking them out of the net. Education is important here, but if there is no consequence for breaking the regs many people will not go through the trouble of educating themselves.
  21. I will rig one rod with a pink semko Another rod with a shaky head Another with a popper another with a jig for pitching into the muck Another spinning rod with a jerkbait I will also be bringing a light musky set up, but I won't be fishing for the pike in the lake. I am excited about this rod, as I hope to be able to entice a few monsters into biting. I will also be bringing two cheap combos for my buddies to use. I am excited to get home tomorrow to pack all my bass stuff. I will only be able to get out Saturday afternoon evening and maybe Sunday morning if my hangover and time allows.
  22. Fun contest, thanks for running it. Djeep you are getting some really nice lures that will put fish in the boat.
  23. On many water bodies that have a fishable population of tigers Muskies Canada has a Know The Difference (KTD) campaign and have posted signs that explain how to differentiate between Pike, Musky, and Tigers. http://www.muskiescanada.ca/general_information/ktd.php. While I can see the confusion in identifying the regulations for tigers, as they are not clearly identified as a species in the regulations the link below instructs people to the KTD signage, indicating that Tigers are considered musky, and as such are subject to the same regulations http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/STEL02_173217.html I did do a web search and found information on this topic to be lacking, but as a general rule when interpreting laws and regulations you should err on the side of caution, which would mean treating Tigers as Musky.
  24. That was a good report and the short time I spent out on the water with Craig and John was fun. I won't spend too much time commenting on hookup rates, but I will say that I was batting 1000. I don't often get a hit, but when I do I connect.
  25. Heading to Chemong that weekend, but I may not fish it if I got a chance to hunt musky.
