Haliburton has lots of large lakes and a little bit less boat traffic if you're into water skiing and stuff. Also, there are so many lakes in the Haliburtons it would take you years to go fish them all. Beautiful area too. On the downside it's a hike to get to the nearest town.. and lets face it Minden & Dorset arent exactly hubs for everything you need. Closest place is Huntsville and thats a bit of a hike. The other advantage to the Haliburtons is that they dont have that stupid closed season from November to May. You can ice fish, or at least fish the late fall/early spring.

lol after all that talk I just did.. I just realized that my biggest bass of the year was caught the day I was forced to re-spool with 14 pound mono. Luckily the bass was an open-water spinnerbait bass, or I'd have been screwed.

I dont think they'd hit 2 pounds, but they are probably over a pound at least. These two never hit 2lbs..

10lb test simply wont survive if you're flippin' heavy pads, wood or weed cover for largemouth. You will break off any big fish you hook. Smallies are different.. they just bulldog in open water. You can land them on 6lb mono half the time.. you'll tire them half to death, but you can do it.

50lb braid is a standard on most baitcasting setups for bass. Especially when flippin'. Actually I prefer 80 for flippin.

Yes salted ones is illegal because it had some effect on whitefish apparently? But you can buy pre-packaged frozen minnows, they sell them down the road from me at the gas station.

Well we headed out hoping for pike or crappie to start.. no pike to speak of but one nice crappie after many hours waiting. Nautifish said to give my best smile, so I gave a smile that screams "I'mmm HAAANNNDSSOMMMMEEE" After that it was slow.. just 3 small perch between the two of us but oh well better than being at home all day. I also got a sweet new hat, I think it was good luck!

Bad news for a lot of bait businesses down here in the south, but it must be done. On the bright side, it may give the perch and bass populations a fighting chance of expanding while the meat hunters scramble to find a bait to replace their precious minnows.

How can you get stressed when fishin is all about relaxing? Nah, I got used to being skunked long ago.

Well Nautifish and I decided we'd try the grand for a little bit this evening.. as we got nearer and nearer I noticed every little ditch was swelled beyond belief which made me think the grand was probably blown.. well sure enough we got there and the water was just flowing like mad. We gave it a few casts anyway hoping for a pike to be fighting that current.. no such luck. After about 45 minutes in a few different spots we packed it in. I dont understand why we didnt get anything, that spinnerbait I was throwing looked so tasty.. I almost had a bite of it myself! Well I hope you enjoyed that spectacular fishing report. Awesome pics wolfville, you are one of the resident carp experts here for sure. Learned a lot from you in the couple hours that we fished together, even though I never caught anything besides that rod breaking monster You gotta come down here in April for giant cats and Lake Erie carp! With your setup they wouldn't stand a chance. Keep up the great fishin!
