  1. Check the rating on the boat. It will tell you the max horsepower restriction. Most are 2hp.
  2. Launch from Hoovers Marina in Nanticoke and bring your boat straight to the end of the Stelco Pier. Follow the buoys straight out from the pier and after 6 miles keep an eye on your fish finder. You'll find the Nanticoke Shoal. The shoal is huge and goes to about 16 feet at it's shallowest point. Smallies this time of year will probably be sitting in 20 - 25 fow. Good luck.
  3. A white tandem spinnerbait, 7 inch plastic worms & texas rig gear, senkos of course, some crankbaits, jigs and grubs. Oh and don't forget the topwaters!
  4. I had maize soaking in a bucket for almost a week to soften like people suggested - worked great. After a while though, it grew a film on top of the bucket and attracted a ton of fruit flies. So I drained most of the water and the bucket has just been sitting outside. I look at it today and there's a bunch of sprouts in the bucket. LOL we have new corn growing in our maize pail! Woohoo bait growing for next year, LOL Has this happened to anyone else? I'm thinkin' I might have done something wrong with this stuff. I thought it would need dirt to grow.. guess not? lol
  5. Try pier 4 park. Lots of shore access and some big carp, drum and channel cats to be caught. Quite possibly bass or pike as well.
  6. Waders are a great investment. Go neoprene or insulated at least (neoprene is 100 times better) for cold water wading. Once you have them, you'll use them all the time and if treated right they'll last ya forever.
  7. Powerbait's proven stuff. After all the new plastics and stuff on the market good old Power worms are still my favourite bass lure.
  8. They are great for pond fishing and much lighter than a canoe. They are tough double PVC lined. Don't jam your hooks right into it, just be careful, be minimal on how much tackle you bring and keep it all organized. My buddy fished out of one for 3 years on his local lake and did really well from it. Not to mention that thing really flies with an electric motor on it.
  9. My bro is a mechanic. He told me long ago, there is no difference whatsoever between cheap spark plugs and expensive ones.
  10. My buddy owns a lodge on that lake. He was saying a couple days ago that the smallies are hitting great, pike are slowing down, and walleye fishing has been slow all year.
  11. Payphones now cost 50 cents if you're using a payphone all the time you're probably better off with a cell phone financially!
  12. We got the family plan with free texting and free local calling between our phones. The time texting comes in handy is if we're long distances apart it's free to text, no outrageous long distance charges.
  13. I found a bank card and a Visa once at the dam in Bobcageon. Also, didn't dive for it but I once hooked and brought in the bumper off an F-150 on my flippin' stick. lol
  14. Wow, what a beast! Congrats!!
  15. After hyping up Long Point Bay's amazing pike fishing to Johnny Bass, he decided he'd come down and finally try it out. At my place before 7am, and we were on our way. Of course, the whole way I talked it up, about how great the pike fishing was. Man we catch a lot of pike out there. The boat launch went fine from Port Rowan (after pretty much filling out a survey just to launch the boat... what the heck) we finally got out to the flats. I still had to rig my rod and Johnny began casting. Pumped full of ambition for the amazing pike fishing we were about to experience, as soon as Johnny's spinnerbait hit the water I asked sarcastically "you got one yet?" Well that's pretty much the point where I realized I had cursed our fishing trip. We spent the next two hours pounding the flats with everything we had, with only one missed pike to show for our efforts. 2 freakin' hours of casting as far as we could, and cranking back as fast as we could. The wind was pretty bad out there, but everything was still fishable. Johnny then finally nailed.... THE WGSF I explained to Johnny that it's pretty rare to get rockies while pike fishing on the bay. He proceeded to catch about 500 of them. So we decided to go in and target largemouth, just to get a little confidence boost. Thank goodness the largies were where I expected, or I was ready to just jump overboard with my tail between my legs. We caught a bunch. Not sure how many, probably 20 but nothing over a couple of pounds. As is the norm on the bay. So the bass fishing was average today at least. The pattern was targetting rock rip-rap banks and steel breakwalls. Johnny used a fluke for the most part and I kept switching between a tandem spinnerbait and a 7 inch plastic worm. All caught fish. So after we had caught enough of the largies we decided to head out to the north channel to see if the smallies were still around. By the time we got out to EC10 Johnny's motor was acting up. Neither of us could pinpoint the problem, but it kept going from it's maximum speed to an idle speed and just staying at idle speed. So our max speed was about 7mph at this point. The wind and waves were pretty brutal at the north channel and things were getting worse. We made one drift though and I picked up 3 smallies on tubes and Johnny caught 4 I think, also on tubes. He was dragging and I was drifting. We found a productive weedline in 10 fow where they were holding. However, with the wind increasing and the looks of a storm being on the way, combined with Johnny's engine acting up, we decided to play it safe and head back to shore to try and figure things out. We got to St Williams and Johnny called a mechanic who said he was pretty sure it was a spark plug problem. Johnny opened up the motor and found a spark plug was unplugged. He plugged it back in and off we went.. everything seemed fine, for about 5 minutes. Then the motor completely stalled out and wouldn't start again. Of course, here's when the storm came! So while we attempted to use the electric motor to get back to shore we just got pounded with heavy rain and even some hail! "When it rains, it pours" Poor Johnny was having a terrible day. BUT he got the engine started again and it seemed to be working well for the time being. The storm passed quickly and we decided to give the pike one more shot. Nope. Another hour on the flats and yet again, nothing to show for our efforts except Johnny's keen WGSF catching skills. So in a last effort we pounded a productive largemouth stretch near Port Rowan and caught a few more. Once again, just little guys. Johnny spotted something HUGE but couldn't determine if it was a bass or a dogfish. Either way, it didn't bite. That was that, we'd both had enough and decided to retire. Johnny, despite all the mishaps, the horrible weather and the slow fishing I still had a good time and we didn't go home skunked at least. I hope in spite of everything you had a good time as well. By the way, I checked that rock bass' stomach contents that I brought home. I found 38 pike. In fishing you win some, you lose some. At least we gave it our best.
  16. Nice fish and what an awesome lake. I just love the scenery in that shot! Did you hit up the Kawartha Dairy?!!!!
  17. My aunt has a house on the Moon River just north of Bala. Her section of river is cool, she's between a dam and a waterfall and owns all the waterfront between the two on her side of the river, and there are no cottages on the other side. So it's basically all to herself. I've fished this section during visits and caught numerous tiny smallmouth bass and rock bass. I'm pretty sure that's all that's in this section, given the sheer numbers of bass we catch. You can sit there and catch them every cast for 3 hours straight off her dock, all 8 inchers. No matter what size lure you use. Anywho, I was thinking of going up for a visit at the end of the summer with the family and figured this time I'll venture into the upper section of the river. My uncle tells me there are walleye to be caught up there. I rarely make a trip for just walleye and bass.. I need something bigger to draw me, lol I'm under the impression that the muskies are just in the lower basin closer to Lake Huron. So I guess my main question is: Are there pike or muskies to be caught in that section of the Moon River? Are they mostly snot rockets or are there some bigger ones? Any info would be appreciated. Not just for me but my uncle asked me to post as well. He doesn't get out fishing much and doesn't really have time to explore the local areas. he works construction 70 - 80 hours a week.
  18. Summer patterns. Drop the spinners and pick up the plastic worms!
  19. Gotcha Sinker, so I'll be fine. I only run a 9.9 and yeah no numbers on the Filth Hound, rumour has it from my dad that at the time my grandfather bought it, it was a "car topper". That's why the hull is so shallow and why the skeg on the bottom cracked from having a motor mounted while the boat was on a trailer. Whew, load off my chest. I was kinda worried, lol
  20. What a WGSF. They're so feisty, so bloodthirsty, they'll annihilate prey that is bigger than themselves. What a fish. lol Great report! Too bad about your musky attempt.. but, it'll come!
  21. I've been stopped by the OPP in the boat twice, once on the kawarthas and once in Dunnville. They were always very nice to us, joked around a bit. Even gave us some Crime Stoppers spoons once. Never was I asked for proof of ownership of my boat, but fishing license yes. Once almost got nailed for not having a bail bucket on board, so I dumped the water out of my 1 litre jug and said is that good enough. He said yep that'll do buddy! I hope I never run into that ownership thing. I don't have it, can't get it. Hopefully the OPP will understand the situation. I like to think they are understanding if you are polite and co-operative with them.
  22. My backpack weighs about 40lbs, I try to bring as much as possible in a compact space. Since I always seem to NEED something I didn't bring with me.
  23. Try Hamilton Harbour with cut bait.
  24. Definitely Cliff. If you have confidence in the lure you'll just "work" it better than you would another lure. You'll also have more patience for it.
