  1. Anyone else notice the timer shows 1:10 when the cleaning is done? Sure hope I don't come back as a perch in my next life.
  2. What a beautiful morning here in TO...had to hit the water in my yak. Took some fishing gear along too. Not much access within the islands right now...one channel was blocked by a dock and the other by ice. Tossed a husky jerk and spoon in a few spots, but no bites and no sightings. The forecast is for temps to stay above freezing this week so maybe next weekend will be better.
  3. I agree with JohnF on this one...comparing last night's Leafs vs Senators game with Canada vs USA doesn't make any sense to me...no offence, just stating my opinion. Maybe the NHL is just like the Olympics, except for the fighting and the skill levels. Can't wait for the playoffs!
  4. thanks Irishfield...I've seen a lot of sun in my life, but don't recall seeing a sundog...will have to keep an eye out for them if they are connected with good fishing!
  5. That is one nice guy...didn't even curse when it happened. I've had big swans and geese swim toward me and felt uncomfortable when they got a little too close. Unlike our friend in the video, I recognized that I was intruding on their mating/nesting activities and moved away.
  6. I was on the water last March and scratched the heck out of my kayak when the wind shifted some ice floes that blocked my exit from one of the channels. I remember catching a few pike and losing feeling in my feet due to the cold. Both my gear and my judgement are better this year so we'll see how the weather looks on the weekend. Still lots of ice in and around the islands.
  7. Well, I wasn't at the game today, but I was at Gretzky's in Toronto. My ears are still ringing and my voice is hoarse. I've seen the Habs win 7 cups and this is the most exciting and meaningful game that I've EVER seen. Canadian athletes truly made us proud during these games. We can all play the patriotism card, but we really have little to no idea of the discipline and sacrifices that our atheletes made to bring us such joy. This has been such a memorable couple of weeks and I will never forget the final game which proved yet again that this is our game.
  8. What a great way to end 2 weeks of competition! Let's hope it's an entertaining game...probably will be decided by the goalies. Both countries are already winners in these Olympics.
  9. I've used that that set up...works great for pike...call it golden boy. The video reminded me of fishing Restoule...the muskeys are there and you'll see the occasional follower, but so far they haven't bitten what I have to offer.
  10. What a great story. Two sayings come to mine: You can't take it with you and you only go around once. Inspiring!
  11. I dropped out of school when I was 19 and my life has turned out OK. Of course, after being unemployed for 4 months and feeling that my friends were passing me by, it was an easy decision to return and finish grade 13. That decision enabled me to go to university and pursue a career. Education really can be the ticket to a better life. Not everyone is cut out for or wants to go to university. As others have said, there is / will be HUGE demand for trades in Canada with our aging workforce. Think long term and check out the apprenticeship programs and courses offered at community colleges. You'll look back one day and realize it was the best decision you could have made.
  12. In addition to being a disappointed viewer, I felt disconnected from and embarrassed by how we were presenting ourselves to the rest of the world. Hopefully, the lasting memories from these Olympics will be something other than the luge tragedy and the opening ceremonies.
  13. I did a fly-in trip on Cochrane Air to Edgar Lake during the first week of July two years ago with a couple of friends. We were very excited about our first fly-in trip. The cabin was big and clean...very basic and kept the bugs out. The boats and motors were reliable. The weather changed several times a day every day we were there. Overall, the fishing was okay with lots of action when the bite was on and some real quiet periods when the low pressure fronts drove though bringing rain and sleet. Biggest pike landed was mid-30's with a couple of bigger ones breaking lines and biting through leaders (sorry Bassive). Most of the walleye were 15-18" with a few in the mid-20's. We thought about doing another trip with Cochrane Air this year to a different lake. Then the report and pics for Attawapiskat were posted so we're heading there instead.
  14. I'm a Cowboys fan. Dallas beat New Orleans. The Colts will win and cover.
  15. I fished Restoule over a dozen days last year and caught one pike, one musky, and some smallmouth bass. It has been a very tough lake for me to fish...even using minnows and worms at times. Friends have a cottage there which is what takes me back time after time. It's a beautiful lake and a nice campground, but I don't think I'd go there for the fishing.
  16. Can't remember the last time the Leafs shut out a quality opponent...congrats!
  17. After last night's collapse, this thread warrants a bump. Leafs chased Luongo from the net and then gave up 5 straight goals for the Canucks. Now tied for last in the East and 29th overall. And they've given up the most goals in the league. Guess Burke isn't as smart as everyone, including him, thought he was.
  18. I've rented cottages through this website before...will probably use them again this year...good selection at different prices. http://www.northerncomfort.com/
  19. I like to ice fish on sunny and calm weekends in February when football season is over. Usually by then I've started getting a little stir crazy from being indoors for 3 months and will endure cold temps. My friends can't believe that I will sit alone for hours staring down a hole, but it's just so darn peaceful and relaxing.
  20. Give this a fishing tune a listen...from my pal, MICHAEL LADEROUTE...sounds like Johnny Cash!
  21. I agree with Burtess...I thought the kid would gasp when he went through the ice...very lucky that he didn't take water into his lungs...probably wouldn't have seen the video then.
  22. I've accepted that I'll never make enough money to pay for ALL of my wants, but my needs are being met which makes me feel fortunate. It's easy to play the math game when it comes to spending. If you REALLY LOVE coffee then I say drink what you want and screw the cost. That goes for anything that you just can't live without...like fishing! Personally, I buy a bag of ground beans from Starbucks and make a big mug each morning. It saves me money and time compared to walking down the street to stand in line.
  23. Only one team in the NHL has given up more goals than the Leafs so far this season. That's a little surprising considering the money this year to "upgrade" the defense and the much reported addition of the Monster. http://www.nhl.com/ice/standings.htm?seaso...10&type=LEA
  24. It seems there are at least two people who believe the Habs will defeat the Leafs tonight. http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/story.html?id=2380789 Happy boxing day everyone!
