Yes forgot to mention the ram diesel!
-
I would look at the ram with the v8 and 8 speed transmission or the Sierra with 5.3. One thing to note, if you aren't towing huge amounts the Sierra with 5.3l and the 3.08 gear ratio would get considerably better economy than other ratios. Interior wise the ram blows everything else away IMO and the 8" u connect screen is very nice to use.

Suggestions for a kicker motor needed.
scugpg replied to BillsTheBassMan's topic in General Discussion
If it can hold the weight go with a 4 stroke twin as it runs and vibrates much less than a single cylinder. -
I sent you a pm as well. We stayed there a while back and had a blast.

Yeah!!! Diawa accudepth now in lefty!!!!

Thx for the info. Yes too bad not in smaller size. I bought a okuma Coldwater in a smaller left size and so far so good with it really like it. -
So what are things to consider when going to diesel? Is it harder to find stations? What about ongoing maintenance and repairs? What about mostly doing 5 to 10km city trips is running cold quite a bit a concern? It drives well from what I've seen and has the heavier transmission that the V8 has with much less fuel usage. Right now they have a free diesel offer on the gc which is a $5000 value! I'm open to considering it but not familiar with the diesel world and long term costs. Thanks

I took a diesel gc out recently and got 7-9 l/100 on the highway 100kmh so not surprised to see those truck numbers! Lots of power too. Although I took a 5.7 Durango out with the 8spd and also got decent mileage around 9-11 highway 80kmh. Wonder if it's that 8spd making some significant difference along with lower rpms due to gear ratio?
-
Thanks all. Checked some forums and some reports of 8spd transmission issues on the V6 model. The V8 and diesel use a different version and appears solid. I'll do some more research and test drive all 3. Imagine it will come down to the 6 or 8cyl in the end based on my needs and much appreciated input on the models.

Left hand walleye trolling reel w/ line out alarm?
scugpg replied to scugpg's topic in General Discussion
Thanks all. Picked up a Coldwater 153 in left. Nice little reel so far! -
What didn't you like about it? I'm still interested to see how it feels with the 8spd but can't imagine it makes much of a difference on mileage. I test drove a 2012 overland with a 5.7 and couldn't tell much difference from the 3.6 was not impressed. However that was with a 5spd tranny.

Looked at the Explorer sport and as much as I wanted a Ford and the v6 ecoboost is a beast in it, I'm not a fan of a few interior features (controls, seats) so had to look elsewhere which is unfortunate. So basically 10k a year of driving, most tow trips would be 20 to 30min drive with a few 300km trips a year. 90% city driving with most trips being 5to 10 kms or so...engine wouldn't be getting warm a lot. Based on that is the diesel likely not the ideal choice and I should consider the V6 or v8 gas?
-
Lots of short runs would be typical. I guess that is my concern with the v6. Currently have an escape 3l v6 which is around 1000lbs lighter than the gc and it pulls the boat good, but have to step well into the pedal if I need power and it works hard. So adding .6l and a lot of weight makes me wonder how the gc v6 will pull upwards of 2000lbs though it's rated for over 6000 with the v6. Although the 8 speed would definitely help. Also going to the V8 adds almost 300lbs to the car and the diesel another 100lbs on top of that.

Hi all, I've been researching the grand Cherokee and am having a tough time deciding what motor I would want if I went that route. The 3.6v6, 5.7v8, or 3l diesel. I would be doing 90% city driving. Towing no more than 2500 lbs. Current boat is 1500 but just thinking for down the road someday. Test drove the V6 and it seems very good however not sure how it would be for towing. I was leaning toward the hemi but there is basically none out there which makes me think the V6 or diesel is a better option due to the hemi being so hard on gas. Cost is basically +2500 for hemi, and another +2500 for the diesel so there is that to consider. I would put 10-12k on the car yearly. So I'm looking for opinions on experience with the motors and even better with a gc with the motors. Thanks

Wow I'm starting to wonder if these yammy 20s are dogs or people just under powering short boats. Any merc owners with similar pain? I too had this setup. 20fs with a 14. Mine had a full floor, casting deck live well, two batteries and a bow mount etc so even heavier than above examples. Played with a couple props and trim settings (should have got power trim) but the biggest help was to ensure the cavitation plate was at level with bottom of boat. The yammys i think are 22.1 inches while most transoms are 20. I raised the motor up along with adding a hydrofoil. Planed easily with 1, but would still plane (though very slowly) even with over 500lbs of people in boat. Topped out at 23mph with 1. Check the height of cav plate in relation to bottom of boat. If it's a lot lower it could be causing excess drag. If you end up raising the transom a bit you would need to do this safely and securely.

Left hand walleye trolling reel w/ line out alarm?
scugpg replied to scugpg's topic in General Discussion
Well look at that. Talked to Stacey about these last year just befpre they came out didn't know they had a bait clicker. Lighter and $150 cheaper than the toro to boot. Might have to check out one of the coldwaters as well since Shimano does not want to help us lefties out -
Left hand walleye trolling reel w/ line out alarm?
scugpg replied to scugpg's topic in General Discussion
Thanks guys. Might check out the okuma in the small size though its a bit heavy to be on a typical 7ft med rod. Steve I'll check the 5501 to see how it measures up as a line counter isn't really a must have. Mike I agree most of the time I hold the rod while bouncing or trolling but would be nice to load in the holder and wait on occasion. Same goes for guests who want to relax and wait for the clicking. Any idea if there is a reel similar to cardiff / calcutta 101/201 that has a line out alarm? And is the toro nacl/winch the only low pro bc with a line out alarm? I can't seem to find any others -
Hey I'm looking for a left hand reel that will be used for trolling walleye baits along with occasional bottom bouncing. I need it to have a clicker / line out alarm. Can be round or low profile. Looking for something small... If only the tekota 300 came in left. Even considered a revo toro nacl 51 but they are a lot more reel than needed and drag likely is too heavy for detecting bites using the clicker/ line out alarm. Also dont usually fish too deep so an okuma convector type reel would be too big and line counter not needed. Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps something new at icast will be released for us leftys? Thanks

I had this exact motor up till this year and it was great. Got an amazing trade in toward a new engine. Believe these were actually yamaha powerheads on these. Have you got a new boat yet? Might be worth seeing what trade you could get at a dealer as the tillers are in demand?

Nf - Cost of lower unit seals replacement?
scugpg replied to Raycaster's topic in General Discussion
I've had good dealings with Clarence at bay city marine in Hamilton. If you're calling around they would be a good starting point. I'd rather have a mech do that job as they have the tools to pressure test etc after the job is done. -
Might be worth calling Joe at pier 74 in nilestown for a custom cover. Does nice work and prices are reasonable. Otherwise off the shelf costco or princess auto is a good choice.
-
I'm do the same. Don't leave mine on overnight either. That said how long do you think its ok to wait to charge them up again. A day or two?
-
Congrats bay city is great. Did either of you guys get power trim on your 20? Interested to see if its a true trim where you can adjust it while trying or on a plane rather than a tilt only setup.
-
Thanks Gents. I exchanged for a 14p and will try that out in the 3rd height setting or maybe bump it up to the 4th setting. Thinking the 14p will get me around 5600 with two people in boat and perhaps a touch more in the 4th setting. 4 blade sounds like another option but isn't a 3 blade better for top end? In terms of monitoring water pressure, is a visual check and an eye on engine temps a sufficient way w/o a pressure gauge?
-
I tested things out with full tank of gas and load today and got those #s. Motor has tons of hole shot and planes quick with the 13p. Perhaps I need to try a 14p. Thanks
-
Thanks for the reply. Don't have a water pressure gauge right now. Didn't notice the bow raising when I heard the noise though so perhaps it was over trimmed. Its a 16ft tiller with a 60hp 4 stroke - 13p 3 blade getting around 5800rpm at wot. Hoping to get a bit more top end by raising if it can done safely. Could also consider a 14p. Thanks
