  1. I was in Sea Cadets before becoming a reservist. Was in a rival corps to Lew's, the old Illustrious. A a teen, cadets opened the door to several exciting opportunities. If your son is doing the leadership course out of Quadra he will have a great and rewarding experience.
  2. My Unle Bob was with the RHA in WWI. He was at the first gas attack at Ypres. When the French Zouaves ran, his battery drove their gun teams in to plug the gap til the Canadians and British could close the gap. They had to shoot the horses. They survived and kept firing the guns despite the gas. They peed on the hankies and tied them round their face to partly neutralize the effects of the gas. He lived to be 90. Rarely spoke of the war, would not go to the legion and never mustered on the 11th. He did not want the reminders. My uncle was an RCN lifer with the carriers. Some of the prangs he witnessed and photographed were horrifying. I was amazed he never got caught with his camera. My cousin was another RCN lifer as a comm. specialist. Got to be aboard the Ottawa on her last flag waving tour before being consigned to the knacker's yard. He spent 4 years living out of his kit bag while attached to NDHQ. Every time our peacekeepers set up a new post or go on another peacekeeping mission, he was there to set up the comm network. The father in-law was a field surgeon attached to the GGFG through the war. I now have a nephew who recently completed his training as an aviation tech. I wish for him a long and exciting career. As a reservist I was fortunate to never be directly in harm's way. Sadly I have known far too many who were not so fortunate in peacetime. Even in peace, service is an hazardous profession.
  3. My thoughts and prayers go to you and your family, Wayne. It's a good thing your daughter is strong willed and stubborn. It will help to carry her through. I still get to experience that gut wrenching feeling from time to time, and would wish it on no one. From one loving father to another, continue to be strong and try to take care of yourself while you focus on your daughter. You do need to be well for her sake.
  4. No matter how much hunter ed and training is given the will always be there putting you and others at risk. My nephew had a close call last year during bow season. He had a stand on his buddy's property and was targetting an approaching buck. Out of nowhere an pops up and pours 4 rounds into the buck, firing in the direction of his stand. Then he threatens the nephew not realizing there are 5 other legal hunters coming on like the cavalry. The police answered the call and gave the little greaseball a verbal warning. Truth be, there is little respect for any of the laws in this nation any more. Why else do you think poaching is rampant.
  5. Can't believe I actually let go of the fishing rod.
  6. Careful Wayne. Start developing an appetite like mine and that plane of yours will never get off the ground
  7. Thanks to CPH for another very successful perch expedition. Despite dark skies and snow showers the bite was definitely on. Here is Rockfish with a nice one. A satisfying end result of quality keepers. Enough for 4 or 5 meals. Even learned a few new tricks today despite almost falling out of the boat
  8. Nothing like a little Red Skelton to put a smile on my face. They're even older than the "knock knock" jokes. The best one....... For our anniversary, the Mrs asked to go to some place different for our anniversary... I took her to the kitchen! And that's when the fight started.
  9. There have been 2 serious propane blasts and fires this past year at propane depots in Southern Ontario. Obviously something is seriously amiss and needs to be addressed. Obviously self-policing, within the industry, is not working, DUHHHHHH
  10. We finally just got the winds here. Trash bins blowing around, big fences knocked down, lots of debris.
  11. Storm was a no show in Grimsby. Just a moderate rain. It was windier during the day.
  12. Apparently not working. All I get is error on page.
  13. Very sorry to hear that. Chin up. Remind yourself that there is always the promise of a better tomorrow.
  14. Pontoon boats are the easiest to make accessible.
  15. Eating the fish I'll be catching Beyond that, working on more harnesses and casting lead. MAybe a little maintenance work on my buddy's greenhouse in anticipation of spring.
  16. Sure looks like a Saturday night in North Bay to me
  17. Well. it was a great evening. Not the biggest crowd, but a great group of folks. Nice to finally put some faces to names. I couldn't stay later, else I might have fallen asleep at the table. Great to finally meet Loonietoon, Gerritt, and the Fish Farmer. Always happy to see HTHM and Vinnimon.
  18. My eyes may be half closed, but I'll be there.
  19. The big problem I see is that with 3 big spring venues, they will only wind up dividing the pool of anglers that participate until one or more venues is forced to fold. Happened with the Salmon venues already. All at once there will be Orillia, Barrie, and Rice.
  20. Which storm to remember? The OCt 13 storm was only vicious in Niagara South/Ft Erie. I was working in Stevensville. Could not see 50 ft in front of me until I hit the escarpment. There was the March storm in 96. I was at Camp Nemo earning my beads as a leader. The snow was getting dicey driving in Friday afternoon. Saturday we were blanketted in heavy wet snow and all the area roads were closed. One of the leaders was having withdrawal because she could not drive out of camp to get her early morning Timmy fix. They got the roads open late Sunday afternoon. Wasn't worried. The cooks figured we had at least 2 days worth of food still left over. The Blizzard of 77 found me walking home from work when they shut down the buses in Scarberia. The 2 1/2 hour walk resulted in severe frostbite to the ears. The skin had split by the time i had got home. After wrapping my head in a towel, our neighbour ran me to the hospital on his skidoo. There was the snow/ice storm of Spring 67. Friday's rain quickly turned to ice, then on Saturday it started to snow for 2 days. The lines were down everywhere. We were told to stay indoors because the lines near our house were down. Took 3 days to turn the hydro back on. We got an extra spring break from school.
  21. Sounds like a great day. Now the wife will be as stoked as you to get fishin.
  22. Too busy canning the harvest to do a big dinner. Had a big heaping plate of perch for brekkie though.
  23. The turre, or properly known as the Common Murre, is a coastal bird that lives along the cliffs of the Newf and Lab coasts. A poor flyer but fantastic swimmer, it often got caught in the fishermen's nets. In years of poor catch harvests, fishermen from the outports would go out and hunt them or net them. They'd be cooked in a pie, not unlike..." 4 and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie' as the rhyme goes. Years ago a school buddy's Mom made a fantastic pie. His uncle would ship a crate of the birds from St John's every year.
