it's a pretty section scenery wise but it gets pounded pretty hard (North Channel, around Rainbow) PM me if you're going back and I'll give you some ski spots (if you're going to let'em go), better chance for skis in September

Abamasagi means "in and out" in Ojibway, that's the way our trips feel, the anticipation, getting in, you catch your breath, and it's time to come out, and it's back to the real world The "in and out" actually refers to the Kowkash River, it dumps in and heads right back out of Aba within a stones throw, a pretty unique phenomenon We enjoy checking out different places to stay the night before, we prefer a camp fire rather than a typical hotel, Hearst Big Game Hunting let us stay here, great price, great guys, google them if you're interested Aba is a big, wide open lake, vulnerable to wind and waves, weather like this is what you want The Kowkash was in flood, so we could get in straight down the river. My Hotmail account has been dicey lately, Howard wasn't impressed and actually wouldn't say a word to us when we showed up at 10:30, not 7, after not receiving my Email. The Americans coming out, also didn't acknowledge our presence I'm guessing because Howard told them the reason for their late departure was us. Some tension we don't really want on our vacation. I can't really blame Howard, he had to make 2 trips and for all he knew my story about the lost Email was Bull, it did feel like being back in high school though This grouse was like a rooster, sitting on a log behind the cabin, drumming at first light Howard came in Wednesday to do some work. Hard feelings persisted, all he said to us was- "Chris, why is the (kitchen) chair in the boat?" me- "for my bad back" Howard- "if it goes through the boat you're in trouble" here's a gear picture, one thing interesting is the golf stroke counter, we use them to keep an accurate account of fish caught There was a new member on the team this year, my nephew Teagan, the first evening he was happy with this 5 lb pike damn, Monday was a rain day, I whip up a thunderstick and wave it at the sky to blow the clouds away rain day plinking out the kitchen window the water was still high and cold, Mike Borger was nice enough to give me a map with detailed spots and GPS coordinates, the fish weren't in summer mode yet and we had to start from scratch, Solo's best spot on the lake only yielded 1 whitie, no walleye at all we had to work for our fish, they were scattered and hard to figure out, here's a 4.5 lbs walleye, released tried to head up a creek to another lake that Mike had reached, a big tangled mess stopped us about 1/4 of the way up more to come, I'm going to post this and edit in more stuff so I don't loose what I have.......... out running the storm %5Burl=http://s949.photobucket.com/user/chrisbrock17/media/sucker_zps61e5691c.jpg.html%5D%5B/url%5D some pike between 8 and 11 lbs %5Burl=http://s949.photobucket.com/user/chrisbrock17/media/100_2333_zps13c9ed8d.jpg.html'> Team Deep Bay Group shot a great trip, biggest walleye, 4.9 lbs, biggest pike, 10.7 lbs, 468 fish in total, well, the sun has set on another trip, I already miss being up there more stuff added you've heard of the Hungry Bear, here's the thirsty bear 4.9 lbs walleye pike around 10 lbs a triple header pike on the scale rapids on the Kowkash http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/ad333/chrisbrock17/rapids_zps73656d2a.jpg

just curious, were they reviving and releasing well? on the Attwood R, not sea run brookies, these fish seemed to fight to the death, the fish weren't hooked bad either, they just seemed to not want to come to the net I remember reading that west coast chinooks and east coast atlantics can totally exhaust themselves during the fight

The great stove debate - Naptha or Propane
chris.brock replied to jedimaster's topic in General Discussion
scent is a strong memory trigger, I love the smell of a naptha stove or lantern and it has been a part of some great outdoor experiences for me, for that reason, I'd say skip the propane when I fire up my lantern, it takes me back to being 10 years old, fishing the Coboconk dam, well after dark, those walleye look even bigger when your 10 -
I have nothing to back this up, but there's a chance that the native, wild, west coast steelhead have a higher mortality after being released than the steelhead in the great lakes tribs I can remember catching 2 and 3 pound brookies on a tributary of the Albany, and the fish were fighting hard, past point of exhaustion, and we were having trouble releasing them, even in the cold water, after catching a couple and realizing they weren't releasing well, I stopped fishing them it was immediately obvious though (it wasn't a delayed mortality, hours later), when trying to release a fish, it wouldn't swim away and had trouble staying upright, even though we were taking our time, holding them in water for minutes I remember hearing/ reading something about the Sutton R, where you could tell there was a party fishing upstream from you, because of all the fresh brookies floating by

Shadow Lake Kawarthas/Haliburton (Norland) Advice
chris.brock replied to saspirilli's topic in General Discussion
you have to sign up, but there's a specific message board for Shadow Lk here http://www.kawarthaanglers.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=44&sid=f84e0df05bab395f325cc67010f81f40 I heard there are quite a few pike in Shadow now -
this is 20 years ago, but it would cough up the odd 12 pound pike not relevant but anyways- I remember walking a trail back to my car, just after dark, head down to follow the dim trail, when I walked right into a giant buck, it snorted so loud I nearly filled my pants and had my heart stop, it stood it's ground as I bolted like a scared rabbit

We're leaving for our fishing trip later this week, either Thursday or Friday (that's another story), the problem is, on the return trip some of us want to go different ways. My Dad and me want to head to Haliburton, my cousin back home to the Hammer, my brother to Ahmic Lk for the week (lucky bugger) anybody from the area (North Bay, Powassin, Trout Creek) have a tip on a safe place to leave a vehicle for a week? A green P, train station, hotel? thanks in advance Chris

if I gorf (fatally hook) a pike, I keep it and take a dorsal fillet, this is a little wasteful too, but I'm not good at removing Y bones I guess the difference is, I only kept the fish because it was a goner

nice brookie, glad you're feeling better, there's nothing like fresh air, paddling, portaging and fishing this time of year

I just took the courses a couple of years ago too, a 12 gauge was also my first purchase. I did a fair bit of research and settled on the Remington 887 nitro mag in camo. It has a 3.5" chamber to keep my options open. I like it so far, no problems. The other gun I was considering was a Remington 870 with 3 barrels, My gun was $425, the 870 combo was just over $500

I guess I'm getting older, this is our new (used) boat I held out for a Yami 4 stroke everyone is having fun I went for a little exploration mission too the lake looked great, I grabbed a canoe cached by the shore, no catch, but I think I'll be back we put the first fish over bow on the boat, a surprise laker on a crank bait then this gal was looking to fatten back up after the spawn, all fish released
