I lived with a foundation that leaked for a long time. Settling cracks allowed water to wick through every time it rained hard, and in the spring as the frost went out and snow melted, it would get worse. I had a feeling that when my house was built, they didn't put in any drainage around the foundation, and living on a slope, sub-surface and surface water would run downhill and pool on the outside of my foundation. Hydrostatic pressure over the years finally worked its way through, opening up some pretty sizeable cracks. It shouldn't have been this way in a 23 year old house, but shoddy site prep by the builder (one family owned it before me) - and that's what you get. Anyways, I was tired of having that knot in my gut every time the skies opened up, wondering how bad it would be this time. So I started looking in to it, seeing what my options were. I considered injection from the inside, but everything I read and everyone I talked to said that if you want to do it right and fix the problem permanently, you gotta hit it from the outside. So I hit it. Hard. Dug up the foundation. Powerwashed it. Filled the cracks from the outside with Sitka. Adhered bituthene over the cracks. Spray coated rubberized watersealant. Attached overlapping Tremco drainage board. Filter fabric and drain tile to code. Clean stone backfill. That was the fall of 2012. Not a drop of water in the basement since. And we had some hellacious rainfalls and runoff after that. Best $6000 I've ever spent, for complete peace of mind, knowing it was done right this time.

NHL makes 12-year deal with Rogers for broadcast rights
lhousesoccer replied to lhousesoccer's topic in General Discussion
The CBC website's story doesn't include a lot of the information I heard on CBC Radio this morning for some reason. CBC will only get one game per week - Saturday night - for the next 4 years. Rogers will have everything else, and after 4 years, they'll have Saturday night as well. They also get exclusive rights to all facets of the broadcast, meaning that how you see and hear the game will be determined by Rogers. In other words, camera angles, Colour Commentators, hosts .... it will all be Rogers, all the time, in 4 years time. -
Thought this would be up by now, but I don't see it, so ..... just wondering what everyone thinks of this 12-year deal the NHL made with Rogers giving them exclusive rights to broadcast all Canadian NHL games? CBC managed to get Saturday night "Hockey Night in Canada" games for the next 4 years, but nothing after that it seems. To me, this is sad news, growing up with HNIC. Big money, big business always wins. Why do I hate Bettman so much?!?! http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/cbc-partners-with-rogers-in-landmark-nhl-rights-deal-1.2440326

Breaking Bad-this Sunday/ Final 8 episodes
lhousesoccer replied to darsky's topic in General Discussion
It's Monday the 30th and I realize the show aired last night. I got it on PVR and I have no idea what happened. This is my guess: Walt's going to blast the crap out of the Neo-Nazi camp with that big gun we saw in the flash forward at the beginning of the season, free Jesse, give him all the money they stole from him, and make him promise to get it to Skylar. And then he will kill himself with the Ricin because he doesnt' want to go down from cancer. Does anyone know if the show was 1 or 2 hours long? I hope the PVR got it all. I can't imagine tying up all the loose ends in 1 hour. Hank's death/funeral/his wife. Walt Jr. Saul. Lydia and Todd. -
Holy smokes. That is an awesome PB muskie! Congratulations. Did I miss the weight? You said you weighed it three times, but I couldn't see where you wrote what the actual weight was. Just curious what a 56" x 26" weighs?!

NF--1st Trip To Montreal (And Respecting The Local Culture)
lhousesoccer replied to brw's topic in General Discussion
Schwartz's is definitely one of the best, but a bit out of the way if you're in the downtown or old Montreal area. Hit Rueben's on Ste. Catherine Street or Dunn's on Metcalfe (right off Catherine) if you're downtown. Either one has smoked meat just as good. -
I was reading down through this thread, hoping to see someone provide this response, and finally I did. Thanks Musky. I couldn't agree more. IMO, it's an odd attitude for people to have, thinking that if they can't use something, or that that "something" doesn't provide a direct benefit to them, then it's not of value. The place and purpose of any species on this planet, whether it's fish, plant, or animal, has so many more far-reaching and multi-faceted values than just whether it can tug on someone's line or wind up as someone's dinner, and it's a shame that so many are blind to that. It's that attitude that is a root cause of widespread habitat and species loss worldwide, whether it's Toronto and other urban centres chewing up thousands of acres of farmland to urban sprawl every year, or slashing and burning Brazilian rainforest to pump out beef for the McDonald's machine. If people fail to see the inherent value in the sheer existence of natural, wild ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them, and they only see what can be provided directly to them for their benefit, then no wonder species decline and habitat loss are no big deal to most of the world's population, right? Big deal - it's just a swamp. Big deal - it's just some trees. Big deal, it's just some fish that I can't catch. The restoration, conservation, and protection of all organisms, for the plain purpose of ensuring their continued survival in this world, to continue providing all of the ecological and intangible roles and values they serve is something we should all strive to support. And yes - this is coming from someone who ate a 17" smallmouth bass for dinner tonight, caught by me fresh this afternoon. As John Muir wrote .... "When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe." This quote has often been incorrectly misquoted as the following more commonly referenced statement: "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." I actually find the latter usually resonates better with most people.

Here's the thread I started in 2009 on this same topic. It had a lot of great responses and tips, including from Solopaddler. http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=71216&do=findComment&comment=804757

Wouldn't say I'm a collector, but I did make this skull mount of a longnose gar I caught last year. I thought it came out pretty good.
-
Nice gar! How do you get the hooks to stick in their bony bill? All the hits I get never result in hook-ups. As soon as they open their mouth, the hooks just fall out. Can't penetrate that bone.

Awesome photos, Mike. I like it when someone knows how to use a camera! Not some crappy cell phone pic. Glad the trip was good. I love the Salmon River, and fresh fish just continue to pour into that place all winter long. I don't know what it is about that area, but lake effect snow will fall there when it's brown and green everywhere else. I've fished the Salmon R. every month between Nov. and April over the years, and had snow in every one of those months on one trip or another. Good times.
