December 26 Arrived Lake Nipissing Lookout on Hwy 17 westbound about 5 kms west of North Bay.
Lake showing open water about 1 km from shore.
December 28 lake frozen for as far as the eye can see, with about 3" of snow.
Temps were -13 C at night and -4C during the day.
It was interesting in the late 80's and early Nineties.
That was b4 the z-bra mussells cleared up the water.
Them ole walleyes would come in an stay awhile in the relative (8-12') shallows.
I remember 60 fish days. Lotsa a small (1/4 lb) ones, but there were a few big ones thrown in the mix.
It was a different fishery than what it has now become.
Beauty report!!
Thanks for sharing, it's good that you included the fishs' weight along with the length and girth, it gives us an idea of the size difference between an 8 pounder and a 14 pounder.
I find it is like a lot of other things. It's not just the ice fishing, or the Duck or Moose hunting.
It's the whole experience surrounding the actual event that makes it fun.
At first I couldn't think of anything, then I realised, years ago I used to save up some eggshells to sprinkle down the hole cause it was supposed to attract the fish or something, other than that I don't have any particular ritual or anything.
Years ago it took several weeks to make a change in the weather.
Nowadays, a couple of days can make all the difference.
Get 2 days at -30 to -40 C and you'll have plenty of ice!
