  1. The weights wouldn't be that low unless I was a participant instead of the organizer.
  2. Definition of navigable waterway directly from the Transport Canada web site: Navigable Water: any body of water capable of being navigated by floating vessels of any description for the purpose of transportation, commerce or recreation. This includes both inland and coastal waters. The final authority to determine the navigability of a waterway rests with the Minister of Transport or his/her designated representative.
  3. Fortunately they probably won't survive the winter: the Pacu
  4. My problem with outsourcing is that you are basically getting a mercenary who is willing to take the least amount of money. You need government oversight to ensure that the money is well-spent, something that obviously wasn't done with ORNGE until it was too late. So now you're still paying the government to make sure the job is being done, plus you're paying to have a private contractor do the job. I don't see how it saves a lot, but I may be wrong. Better to cut out the middle man. Plus the government is accountable to the electorate and we can throw them out if they directly screw up, if they are contracting out they can pass the buck and say "wasn't our fault!", and bury the thing under mountains of paperwork and bureaucracy. In tough economic times like this I have no problem with the government keeping services going and employing people to do the job, the money will circulate and we get the services we need. But everyone screams that they want to see some austerity, which in this case means that we still lose.
  5. I share your concern, but the gun registry was federal, and it is/was ORNGE wasting the money they were allotted, not the government, who gave it to them in good faith to provide a much needed service. I'm certain that after the required investigation is completed our air ambulance service will be run properly. Let's keep the focus where it belongs.
  6. I don't play myself, but this sounds interesting: http://www.wimp.com/perfecttip/
  7. Make certain that they're not the introduced and invasive rusty crayfish, as far as I know it's illegal to possess them alive, even as bait.
  8. A crime against the environment is the worst crime possible.
  9. We never had a lot of money when I was growing up, but my parents would regularly save up some money for little trips to places like Fenelon Falls and rent a boat so that we could go fishing. A lot of lower income families might not be able to give their children that pleasure if there are extra fees added to things like boat rentals and other water activities. If they have to raise my taxes a little bit to maintain the system that's fine by me, I'll gladly pay an extra couple of bucks a year so that everyone can enjoy it. That's basically the way our health care system runs; everyone pays so that everyone benefits. And who can deny the emotional health benefits of having a free playground for all?
  10. There are a massive amount of people walking around breathing air and absorbing sunlight from which there is currently no financial contribution. If you reside in the riding of the dishonourable member, and you vote for him in the next election, you are an idiot.
  11. If it comes directly off your taxes there isn't much you can do except fight it afterward. But if I am told that I have to pay before launching a canoe I will ignore any such request, and any collection action attempted will be met with a string of expletives that would curl the ears of a Sergeant Major.
  12. Okay guys, let's pile on him for not blurring the background. I'M KIDDING!!! Nice one Josh!
  13. If they think any sensible person will pay they can think again. If introduced, this is one of those laws which should not merely be ignored, but should openly and blatantly be broken. And anyone who does knuckle under and pay had better be doing so in order to force a court challenge, or they will forever be my enemy.
  14. You should be able to find some nice bass there, I run a small tournament on that lake every year and we've regularly had weights of 6lbs+ on the scales. I do know the secret behind the method used by one of our regular winners, but I ain't spillin' nuthin'!
  15. At our local skeptics pub night last Friday a guy showed up with a fishing rod, and I asked him afterward what the story was. He said one of the local pools had been stocked with trout, but he didn't catch anything. I thought at the time "why trout, wouldn't panfish be easier for people to catch?" Heck, most of them will bite anything. Didn't know they were actually gutting them for dinner, so that may explain it. I guess a lot of people new to fishing might not realise that panfish are edible, but everyone has heard of trout.
  16. I wish it was only 30 years.
  17. That seems to be getting around. I coined it years ago as Bailey's Second Law: There is no direct relationship between the three virtues of intelligence, education, and wisdom. Bailey's First Law states: Necessity may be the mother of invention, but laziness is usually the father.
  18. As far as I know there was legislation, but during the 80s (if I recall correctly) it wasn't being enforced due to cutbacks. I believe that a government inspector was required to board incoming ships and ensure that ballast water was dumped at sea before coming down the St. Lawrence. At least, that's what I've heard, but others may have better info. But don't worry about more horror stories coming from our government, they are now enacting measures to prevent you from hearing such things: Parks Canada staff banned from criticizing Feds
  19. Very true. I drive to Sudbury quite often, and it isn't anywhere near as pleasant as it used to be. Going through small towns and occasionally stopping for a walk or a bite to eat was great. No.
  20. Yeah, but they probably get a lot of practise removing hooks, maybe even daily!
  21. 30 minutes?! Took me a couple of hours for the same problem at the same hospital a couple of years ago. You must know somebody there.
  22. Great blue heron, not related to cranes.
