  1. As an interesting aside, last night during the approach and entry a facebook buddy of mine was bemoaning the fact that he had no choice but to watch it on line, as his 500 channel Bell satellite service didn't carry NASA TV. Think about the irony of that; a satellite connection that doesn't carry NASA!
  2. The money is well spent. In an age where science in general is being denigrated by many, we need to have things which inspire the next generation to actually care about what science is and what it can do. It has served humans more and better than any other endeavour, and must be pursued if we are to face the challenges of our future.
  3. Can't add anything to what everyone else has said, priceless!
  4. I just love the colour variations on smallmouth! Interesting pic. Were you somewhere in the clay belts?
  5. I believe a couple of the posters here have been, or are going, to Restoule PP this summer. Any info to be had? I would like to do something I've never really tried; target walleye. Haven't caught one since a little dink at Fenelon Falls back in the 60s. Also will be dropshotting for smallmouth over any rock falls, topwater largemouth near weeds, might get a few pike that way too. Totally unfamiliar with the lake, so I'm looking to decrease the amount of learning time. (Which, for me, usually lasts until the drive home )
  6. Thinking of adding a stop to the Gals 'n' Pals tournament for next year, and was looking at Kahshe Lake. Tried to contact Rockhaven Inn but their e-mail address is no longer valid. Anyone know anything about what facilities may be on that lake?
  7. And then the fight started...
  8. Looks like Madison has a good future ahead of her!
  9. Can't say I would really blame them, especially with the scavenger problem. The ring-billed gulls are already there in profusion. I live within walking distance of the area at the bottom of Liverpool Road, and I enjoy strolling there frequently, although I'm certainly NOT a 'hipster'. And with all the garbage left by fishermen down there it's a wonder they haven't done something about just dropping a line in the water. It's a pigsty, no insult to pigs intended. Good point. I have one, it's right beside my kitchen sink. It's not like anyone is going to have a shore lunch on the rocks at Frenchman's Bay. Or are they?
  10. What a beautiful day! Weather couldn’t really have been any better, warm but not too hot, a light breeze, and sunny. Great day for fishing! The word around the lake is that things have been, well, ‘different’ I guess is the best way to put it. Our weather has been a bit weird ever since the fall, so no doubt the aquatic life has been affected. But it only takes one fish to win a tournament, and fortunately most returned with more than that. Nineteen teams participated this year, just one short of my self-imposed ‘happy minimum’. Twenty five would be nicer, thirty would be great, anything more and it’s too much like work! Quite a few new participants this year, and they placed well. Let’s go from bottom to top, just for the drum-rolling drama of it all. 5th place went to Lara Buziak and husband Mike, who brought in 10.10 lbs of fish, their biggest being 3.85. 4th was taken by Heather Mulholland and her partner Cameron Neville, with 10.45lbs. In 3rd place were Nicole Gardiner and Craig Lanegger, with 11.05 lbs, including a nice smallmouth that weighed exactly 4.0 lbs. 2nd was occupied by newcomers Jessica Durkee and her father Greg, with 11.55 lbs. Okay, what are the Ruttles eating for breakfast? Once again, Judy managed to overcome her annual handicap (husband Terry, nyuk nyuk nyuk) and top the scales with 12.90 lbs, including the biggest fish of the day, a 4.95 smallmouth. A tip of the cap to regulars Jen and Barry McCrackin, who were just pipped at the wire by a measly 0.10 lbs, with a total of exactly 10.00. You should have let your dog have a go Barry, my old eyes wouldn’t have recognized the teeth marks. There are three big shoutouts that I want to include. When trying to book the town dock there was conflict after conflict, and things were looking grim. RPM Marine stepped up and offered the use of their facility, and Alan and crew were extremely accommodating and helpful. If you are out that way stop in and give them some business, they are a great facility and you’ll be glad to know that you have a place on the lake that will service you. Number two goes to regular participant Chris Wetzel. He somehow did a number on his back a short time ago, and competitive fishing was not in the cards. But his young son Braeden really was bugging him to get some fishing done this year, so Chris approached me with an idea that morning. We would put Braeden on the scoresheet, and let him weigh his catch, and he chose the number 66 as his entry. At the end of the day he returned with 4.85 lbs of bass, including a 1.65 as his largest. Nice job Braeden! And Chris, you did something wonderful for him, you’re an example to fathers everywhere! And number three goes to the Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast on Canning Lake. When our room reservation was totally forgotten by the Dominion Hotel in Minden, Sally and Jan's place was a very nice, and highly superior, alternative. If you ever want a nice getaway in beautiful surroundings, and a place you can truly feel at home in, you can't go wrong by staying there. Luxurious is understating it, magnificent would be better! Lara and Mike Buziak: Jessica Durkee: Judy Ruttle and her BF: Braeden and his haul:
  11. I'm within walking distance of Tightline so that's my first choice. I have been into the Sail in Oshawa and Vaughan, I like them. But I would like them to do something with their web site, it's nowhere near as comprehensive as CT or BPS.
  12. And you came here looking for denial of that?
  13. Skillz. He haz them.
  14. Well as the Bard of Ayrshire wrote, "The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley..." Circumstances intervened and prevented any watery excursions, I hope Meagen brings back some of whatever she was handing out samples of, I need a drink now.
  15. Saw the thread title and immediately though John, Paul, George, and Lingo.
  16. Perhaps, but it also gave the animal rights people a tearjerking cause to take to the public. When bears are hunted in the spring it quite often means that the young are left to fend for themselves before they are quite old enough, and they can starve. They were taking that issue to the public, if I recall correctly, and it was rather easy to win them over. In my opinion (and keep in mind that I'm not a hunter) it was a good idea for sportsmen to cede that part of it in order to keep a hunt at all. But the question I have is this: did the ministry increase the number of bears that can be taken in the fall? As far as I know they didn't, which seems stupid. Count the average number that were taken in the spring and add it to the amount allowable in the fall, problem solved.
  17. Are you sure that's a smallmouth and not a whale? Holy CRAP!
  18. Might be heading up to Peterborough on Saturday, my daughter has to run a tasting session at an LCBO up there (wow, talk about the fox in charge of the henhouse!). Thought my wife and I might take the canoe up and do some fishing for the 5 hours that we'll have free. I'm not looking for any specific honey-holes, just general areas that might be good with a canoe. Was up there last week and there's a place to put into the canal at the end of Armour Road, but it might be a bit hectic with boat traffic, not sure. Had a run up to the north side of Peterborough today and before returning I checked out the extreme south end of Chemong, looks like a nice spot but I don't know about launches. Anyone have any info? Thanks in advance!
  19. I doubt that there is any 'yes or no', 'right or wrong' answer to this question, but I really would like to get some input. As most of you are already aware, the vast majority of fishing tournaments are not only catch and release but have penalties for dead fish, and all live fish must be released. But with the outbreak of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia I am wondering if there would be an objection to the following scenario: a fish is presented for weigh-in which shows VHS. It is alive, and returning it to the water would only serve to spread the disease to others. The flesh is perfectly safe for human consumption, so should we allow the participant to retain the fish without penalty? Should we go so far as to encourage that it be kept? And does anyone know if the ministry has a policy on returning such fish to the water? I know that the regulations say that fish suitable for consumption should not be allowed to spoil, are there any exceptions in order to prevent the spread of VHS?
  20. Comes from the unfortunate fact that people persist in referring to Coors Light as beer, despite all sensible evidence to the contrary.
  21. For anyone wondering where to get them, here's a link. $4 US doesn't seem too bad of a price. I'm not a car guy but I just might pick up some strictly for the lolz.
  22. More proof that the most important thing in fishing is to simply get something, anything, in front of their noses. In other news, toy stores are reporting that they are suddenly being overrun with men looking to purchase Hot Wheels toys, or cheap knock-offs, "We can't keep them in stock" said one store manager, "and for some reason they always ask our check-out clerks where the nearest tackle shop is." Mattel stocks are rising on the news, and shortages of product are expected.
  23. That's one heck of a good report, looks like you had a ton o' fun! I have good memories of Net Creek from about 40 years ago. We were visiting friends in Latchford, and went to the dam area for the afternoon to do some swimming and fishing. We started out with the snorkels, and while I was under I noticed some nice size bass. Then an old piece of mono with a spoon on the end caught my eye, and I held my breath long enough to unhook it from the sunken log it was snagged on. I went back to shore, attached the line to a piece of wood, and went back under to dangle it in front of whatever I could find. Then the others grabbed their fishing gear and snorkels and did the same thing. We caught some nice ones that day, and all while we were underwater!
  24. Posted about the Pacu last week here, it contains an article link. And this Wikipedia page doesn't do much to dispel it as a total myth.
