    Monica and I just had to get out of the house, so on Saturday we took a trip up to devil's Lake, near Minden. Just enough time for some lure washing and a swim before the clouds looked like they might end the day with a soaking. Nothing big was caught, but we were just glad to get out and relax on the water.

    Finally replaced the fishing vest that was in the car when it was stolen last year, Doesn't have the same sentimental value that a present for the family had, but except for the colour it's exactly the same, a Bushline Aparaho. Not sure if they spell it that way on purpose, or whether they didn't know that the indigenous tribe is 'Arapaho', but whatever, I've finally got one. I prefer it to a tackle box, the only trouble is keeping certain lures, like large plugs, in cloth pockets without them hooking the fabric. Haven't found those plastic Plano lure boxes that are large enough for a lure but small enough to fit in a pocket. I'm finding that plastic pill jars are quite useful in that regard, so I'm saving them. Gradually replacing all the stuff I had in it, but it's nowhere near as heavy as the previous one yet. I got so used to the weight that when the new one arrived in a box I thought it was empty!

    Nice day! I gave up on those heavy tube jigs a while ago, never been able to cast one more than three times before getting hopelessly snagged and breaking it off, even with 20lb braided,

    Those beer cans weigh a lot less once they're empty, so why is it so difficult to carry them out? Here's sight that greeted me near Sudbury last weekend, and I had no bags with me: Its time for radical approaches, like a minimum $1 deposit. "BUT THAT MAKES THINGS TOO EXPENSIVE!" No, it doesn't, because you only pay it once. You buy 12 beers for (pulls figure out of butt) $24. Deposit adds $12, for a total of $36. When you return the case of empties, your $12 deposit is returned, which you then apply to your next purchase. YOU ONLY PAY IT ONCE, FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! You could make it cripplingly expensive to not return bottles and cans, but you only pay it once. "But I broke a bottle!" Fine, collect up the pieces, and as long as you can return (reaches for butt again) 90% of it, by weight, you still get credited. We really have to get this crap under control somehow.

    When I worked at Pearson we learned that coyotes love to do it in the middle of a runway. Great fun taking a new guy out for a FOD check: Driver: "There's some debris, just lean out and pick that up." New Guy: "Okay, I'll get it... what the hell?!?!?!" Driver: "Sorry, should have told you to wear gloves." <snicker>

    This thing is just nuts. The price is outlandish. And I can see some big fish getting its mouth around one of the blades and making it really tough to extract. But it seems to work.     So, I finally replaced my fishing rod, Pflueger President reel with a Fenwick Eagle rod. As with the last one, spooled it with 20 lb PowerPro. And yes, I did spool it correctly, and didn't put too much on, before anyone takes me to task about that! But the same problem I had before; the line is so stiff that it gets unbelieveable tangles. Went out yesterday for the first time and spent more time trying to untangle rats nests, most of which I just cut. My old reel had the same line, but it had been on for a long time, and was as flexible as cotton thread. No more tangles. Now I will admit that the lures were too light to keep the line tense, but I wanted to get a heavy system going before replacing my lighter rod, which I always spooled with mono. But I used to be able to use light lures with my old Pflueger, once the line got older, and had no problem. I prefer the braided to minimise break-offs, but right now it's a real pain in the gluteus maximus. So again, other than continual use, and cutting line off, is there any way to quickly 'age' the stuff? Alternatively, is there something I could fix to the rod that I could place the line in after casting, snap it shut, and produce tension on the line before reeling in?
