  1. Hey Joe! I use Flouro leaders religously - mostly due to: - better abrasion resistance than mono, - less prone to bite offs than braid or mono - resistance to kinking like wire and an added benefit is - less visibility in water than anything else (although not invisisble). However flouro tends to cut into itself when tying knots so extra care in lubricationg knots is key. Not all flouro is equal, I love seagar but had lots of breakage with vanish. I prefer to use braid for main line and a 4'-6' fluoro leader. I use uni-uni knot to connect leader (or sometines use a swivel), on the business end I use a palomar knot for jigs & hooks or a uni knot with open loop for lures. I can keep a heavier braid on reel and just change flouro test lbs'age to suit fishing style. Cheers Ted
  2. The fact is if we want to grow or maintain a higher standard of living then it is incumbent upon each of us to take responsibility for our future. That means developing hard to export skills, e.g. Sales, engineering, medicine, law, intellectual jobs, skill trades, etc... As far as manufacturing jobs, North America did to Europe what Asia is now doing to North America. We can scrap free trade, take protectionist actions like buy Canadian/American but that will not stop the inevitable.... we live in a global economy and there is no changing that fact... Many North Americans consume more than we contribute, live beyond our means, use credit irresponsibly and don't save for tomorrow... Buy smart and use the money you save to build your personal value e.g. education, etc... and build your own financial wealth. "Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% of what we do about it."
  3. Go Yahoo... I have been using for 3 yrs. Works like outlook for sorting etc.... tons of space .. no headaches...good spam filter.
  4. All good recommendations. I built a customer HT w 100" screen & Panasonic PT-AX100U 18 months ago and it is still jaw dropping to watch! TIP: Don't get scammed by the $$$$ cable scam. When you start talking digital signal like HDMI (prefered method of connection) there is no need to buy Monster or any other ridicoulosly priced cables. As seen on Market Place ... (fyi..I have an elecrical/electronic engineering background ). When it comes to cables High $$ does not necessarily mean high quality... I bought amazingly high quality cables here for a fraction of the price of Monster etc...: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepar...amp;cp_id=10240 TIP: Ship via USPS (United States Postal Service) and NOT a courier as you will get burned for brokerage fees.
  5. I am a real convert to using braid with a flouro leader. Most manufactures sell 100% fluorocarbon in both main line & leader material with leader being a premium price. Excluding Vanish (it's junk - disintegrates too fast - IMHO). Aren't they both the same? Is there really a benefit to paying more for 'leader' over main line? What do you think? Thx, Ted
  6. 3 issues: 1) no matter what if he gets hurt we all end up paying big - not fair 2) it's wrong to have 2 laws one for us and another for 'religoius' exceptions - not fair 3) the cost to us in legal expenses unconciousable when we have kids going hungry in this country - not fair This is crap.
  7. 7ah gell cells are a great choice. My favorite sources are Active Surplus on Queen St W (toronto) and several electronic surplus stores on the North side of Matheson just west of Dixie in Mississauga. Very good prices!
  8. Buy a water tight Sea Bag and tie a long poly rope to it (good as a throw bag) inside put whistle, flashlight, flares, knife, thermal blanket, waterproof matches, energy food bar, small first-aid kit and any other important items in case you end up abondoning ship (god forbid)
  9. Great point Irishfield, about undoing the ball. I run a chain through my outboard between the shaft and the transom mount chained through trailer wheel spoke & frame. I have heard of theives using chainsaws or such to cut the motor right out of the transom!
  10. Now that is funny!
  11. There was a time that I had the utmost respect for our police. However I have had the misfortune to be unjustly harassed by Peel's finest (short story.. young macho cop tries to impress female colleague at my expense - I just happened to be passing the wrong donut shop). Too often I hear first hand stories as they brag to their friends how they showed some perp who's boss. In balance they do put up with a lot of azzholes but many seem to get tainted and forget most people are basically good. I am a father of 4 (3 in university, 2 valedictorians) and significant contributor to my community. I can't believe the lack of civil respect demonstrated by some our police.... It's a shame the damage few bad apples can do to a respectable organization. Thx for letting me get that off my chest...
  12. Computers and Software are big company conspiracies to build public dependence and frustration which in turn employ geeks like me and make tech companies wealthy!
  13. My sincerest best wishes for a speedy recovery. Ted
  14. Maybe should have save the lure and taken the thumb....
  15. I bought my Shimano Gortex Rain Suit from Gagnons last spring on sale <$500. Love it! Ted
  16. OK now I want to know the manufacturer and line type. Besides curiosity we may find similar experiences amoungst the group. As an example I used to swear by Berkley Vanish but switched to Seaguar Flourocarbon based on practical experience with both. Cheers Ted
  17. Steenburg is well stocked with splake.
  18. Shhhhh! It's a secret. "There are NO fish in Chandos... "
  19. A Chandos fish story... After many conversations about hitting Chandos Lake (Just east of Apsley Ontario), my neighbour up-north, Harry, who is an avid laker angler and I decide to grab my boat and head over to Chandos in search of the legendary fishes that inhabit it. We launched at the north end around 2:30 pm just after a mild storm front had moved through and preceding what would be a larger storm later. We where fishing in clear sky's and the steamy heat of a mid-day in early July. We cruised for about 15min until we found 70+ ft of water depth. All of a sudden my Lowrance lit up with more fish marks then the demo screen. The marks where so thick and many, that the Lowrance kept changing auto-depth, thinking that the fish ½ way down was the bottom of the lake! We set up the down-riggers each with lucky strike canoe spoons, pearl colour with big red dot, tipped with minnows. Almost immediately Harry's rigger goes off, he feverishly grabs the reels and begins to haul in a big fighter but alas it has only grabbed the back of the minnow, bit it short, leaving nasty looking, ragged entrails drooping from the minnow head. With great expectation we quickly re-rigged and setup for another run. No more than 15min later his rod fires off again. This time we have a hook set. He begins reeling, drag starts peeling. I quickly pull in the other line and riggers and throw the boat in neutral. Still more drag going. 200+ FT of 50lbs Power Pro is being peeled off of the reel. Finally Harry starts gaining line. The 9ft TDR rod is just-a thumping. I ask Harry if he wants the net...his reply was the memorable line of the day..."I don't think that net is big enough!" Not sure if he was messing with me or not, so I grab both the net and gaff. By this time a SeaDoo with 3 spectators pulls up to watch the commotion. Finally after 15 long tense minutes we see a flash beneath the surface "Holy @#$^!? " I drop the net....and wrap the gaff strap around my wrist. The beast comes to the surface and Harry manoeuvres it towards me. I slip the gaff under the gill plate and heave it into the boat. The SeaDoo audience gives us a standing ovation. "Oh my gawd...." ~20lbs of glistening gray beauty, 36 inches in length. With only 1 point of the fine wire treble holding it by the mouth. Harry had skilfully loosened the drag and avoided horsing the fish which would have lost it for sure. His previous personal best was 10lbs this was almost double. He didn't stop shaking for an hour!
  20. Hey Joe: Send him out for coffee then lock the doors and turn out the lights and put a foreclosure notice on the door... maybe he'll quietly fade away ...lol T
  21. Good catch...maybe drill and tap a 1/4"-20 hole through underside of hing into grab bar and use a set screw? I need to same on mine...
  22. Actually the infrastructure has been paid for ten times over... And usage of these wires is far from free as any competitor has to pay significant "contribution" fees... Bell has had a good long free ride on taxpayers backs for way too long. Where else can you have a monoply biz for almost 100 years with a guarenteed rate of return in excess of 10%. How else does a company get to $35,000,000,000.00 when most of their customers detest them???
  23. Not necesssarily..most new VoIP modems/routers have a built in Gell Cell battery that should last a day or 2. In the last big outage the Bell CO in Newmarket died quickly...Bell is no longer reliable like they used to be. I work for a very large networking manufacturer and we sell VoIP solutions to Bell's competitors...one of the fastest growing parts of our biz.... Thankfully Bell still has the nerve to charge more than double of their competetors...e.g. Primus, Cogeco, etc...
  24. For what it's worth ...take a drive to Niagara Falls (US) and try Gander Mountain.... Amazing selection & prices - Senko's for $5-6 US and BPS here wants $9...
  25. Just curious... I stayed away from isolators because they general use an arrangment of diodes to protect from reverse current flow( discharge) BUT if I recall correctly there is a price to pay in the .6V volatge drop across the diode? Dosn't that mean then the 13.8vdc feed to my battery is now 13.2? And therfore reduced current flow?
