Adam, the only time you can use a US approved lifejacket and get away with it is if you're visiting Ontario from the US. Here are the rules outlined on the Transport Canada website.
I don't know how much of a laker run Bronte gets, but you'll be wanting to hit the piers with some hardware in the near future.
When someone is talking about 50 Point and lakers, they are most likely talking about fishing out in the lake (ie in a boat)
A lot of the guys who fly fish for them don't actually hook them, they just get wrapped up in the long streamers. I don't think I've even had a fish turn on a streamer, even though it's 6inches from his face.
So you know exactly what I'm talking about. I'm guessing they are going after big schools of shad. I've even brought out the 6wt and streamers and can't get one to go. It's discouraging.
Sidecasting is a lot less effortless, lol. There's also the spinning side cast which a buddy of mine does.
Wallis cast does help reduce line twist however (Although I think most of it is from the float spinning, not the casting itself IMO)
GPS is going to be your best bet. It will keep track of all kinds of things (total distance travel, ETAs, etc) And in case the fog rolls in and you have no idea where you are, you can get back to shore
