  1. jimmer, looks like you found the secret pike stash on your home lake ? is that the portable bird i sold ya a while back? still kicking i see!
  2. Don’t lose sight of the fact that the difference between 10 and 8 mill is literally 2 million dollars....that’s a hell of a lot of money lol 2 million dollars buys a lot of stuff
  3. The fans will boo him if he sits out games for sure. If he’s signed before October 2nd then it’s water under the bridge. it was 3 at 8.5 he wants 3 at 10 I believe, which is absolutely ridiculous. At some point the leafs are going to start thinking about trade possibilities, there’s some teams out there that would pay marner 12+ you just need to get a decent return for him.
  4. when bug season extends into ice fishing season im done with fishing lol. You can convince me to sit out in the cold, drill through ice waiting for a fish to pass my whole while also trying to clear bugs away from me. Screw that lol
  5. Further to Jimmers point, we are now fully seeing the absolute worst implications of the NHL's cap as it is currently structured. This to me is a total PR gaff by the NHL and the players union. Lets be totally clear here, the NHL is doing better financially than it ever has in the history of the league. The cap keeps increasing because the league is making more and more money, and the owners are also making more and more money as well. The total screw up in all of this is that the NHL, its teams and players are a product/commodity. The owners job is to sell his players and franchise to its fans. Jerseys, tickets, merchandise etc etc. Now you tell me...How many hockey fans are out right now buying Brayden Point, Brady Tkachuk or Marner jerseys? Furthermore, what is the average leaf fans opinion of William Nylander right now? What about Marner? This whole vilifying exercise of the leagues shining stars and young talent is a bloody disaster. At no time should fans be concerning themselves with the amount of money that star talent is asking for. Thats 100% between the owner/team and the players. Look at every other major sports league and how they handle star player contracts. Do you think a single Dallas cowboy fan is pissed off at Zeek for the contract he just got? Not a chance. Are clippers fans mad at Kawhi for making his max deal...absolutely friggin not, we were begging him to take more money and stay in Toronto! If the league needs to have a hard cap, you absolutely 100% have to stop penalizing teams for doing an incredible job at drafting and developing young talent. Furthermore you absolutely 10000% need to offer some form of incentive/break for teams that do exactly what the league is trying to impose by implementing said cap. My solution to the problem is simple, you offer a cap discount (whatever you determine to be reasonable) for singing UFA's coming off of entry level contracts. What this means is that the teams that draft and develop good young talent gain a monetary advantage against the "imaginary monetary cap" for signing their developed players coming off of their entry level contracts. Its then the job of owners and GM's to ensure that young players coming off of entry level deals dont take advantage of the system and say "hey, you are getting a discount, and im a 10 million per year player, so now I want 15 million because its only 10 million against the cap" Ill admit right now, that I am pissed off at marner, the leafs IMO already offered him far too much if they actually offered him 11 over 7. The fact that he said no to becoming the highest paid winger in the entire NHL is even more mind boggling to me. Hell hes not even the best UFA coming off entry level, never mind the best winger in the NHL. If marner is worth 11, does that mean brayden point is worth 13? and if marner thinks hes worth 13, point is worth 15? give me a friggin break. I now firmly believe that marner is going to pull a nylander and sign way into october for the 11 he was offered. Like an idiot, he could have taken it back in June but now hes going to sit and wait for the same offer again. Heck part of me says he just may not even get that offer ever again, Im pretty sure the leafs only have 10.5 to offer him now anyways?
  6. funny you say that cause i caught a consistent bite deep but my biggest bite of the weekend was in less than 5fow. go figure. There was another 2lber with the fish too and i caught that as well, but then got skunked the other 3 days i was fishing unless i was fishing 22+fow.
  7. yup, i too have done well but its definitely a haul in a small boat from your place jimmer. Consider musky? South end is dynamite for musky fishing in the fall. Thats a big time option for you.
  8. if you want to catch smallmouth right now, you pretty much have to have electronics. They were all 22+ fow deep and needed to see the bait dropped on their head to eat.
  9. i mentioned living with bugs, ive already posted one video of the mosquitos in 2018...well this year was the year of blackflies, mosquitos and deer flys. In the close to 15 years up there I have never seen anything like it. The seasons seemed to blend into each other as well. I remember one day, if you were in the shade you were swarmed by blackflied and mosquitos, if you stepped into the sun you got swarmed by deer flies. One particular day in july it was calm hot and sunny, I tried to take my dog for his walk and we had to call it quits. He had a swarm of about 40 deer flies clouding him and continuously biting him on his underside and nose. Heres a clip from blackfly season, mind the language!
  10. UPDATE: for those that asked as mentioned here, after some long consideration I came to the conclusion that with my current work situation and the availability of my families place in PAB, I have held off on moving to my own home for the time being. a few thoughts related to the comments here: 1. No offense to anyone here, but as mentioned in this thread by Jimmer, the kawarthas and surrounding area are far too busy for the lake life that I will eventually be looking for. I spend 4 weekends a year on the tri-lakes and clear/Stoney and it can be worse than the city with the seadoo, cigarette boat, wakeboard boat crowds. 2. Barrie from what I witness when I regularly pass through has really taken a turn for the worst in recent years. The “drugs” thread touched on the what appears to be opioid and meth problem that has spiked there recently. It’s more the rule than the exception for me to now see tweakers and junkies in the essa and Bayfield areas of town. It’s really unfortunate. 3. Due to some uncertainties related to the program that I work for (automotive material stewardship) there’s a slight chance that my program could see some major changes in the next two years resulting in me needing to switch jobs potentially to one that would be more office based. As such making a huge investment in the parry sound area is going to need some more time. I have made it clear to my live in girlfriend that If she decides it’s time to start a family, we are leaving the city as we can’t raise a family in an apartment in the city. She agreed but we aren’t there yet. 4. Bugs...i survived this year and if I can make it through the bug season we had in pointe au baril this year then I’ll manage. I’ll have to post some of my videos from blackfly/mosquito season. It was quite literally overboard to the point that there were days that I couldn’t take my dog for a walk not because of me, but because my dog was suffering too much, and he’s tough. 5. Winters? I love winter and snow. (I’m originally from northern Manitoba) Up until I owned my own boat snow and winter were my favourite season. No problem. 6. Culinary, I agree that not being able to grab a burrito/chipotle on the regular might drive me a bit crazy so it’s an interesting point to make. But I think trading off burritos for fishing is worth it ? 7. Culture and raising children, well luckily I’m a Canadian mutt, so my culture is the north lol. As far as raising kids, I was raised in Flin Flon and Georgetown. Both small towns, where I stayed out with my friends all summer at 14 years old till two in the morning riding bikes and swimming in pools. I wouldn’t want it any different for my kids should I someday decide that’s the path I want to take. Being too remote can obviously present challenges in that regard. It’d be important to at least be near a town like parry sound or the like. That is IF and that’s an emphasized IF I would want kids. I don’t think either me or my gf of almost 3 years are convinced we’d ever want children and we are both already 31. 8. Current living situation is allowing me to kind of get best of both worlds. My family has a place up north that I can basically spend as much time as I want at already. what I’ve been doing almost all summer is spending 4+ days a week up here when I can. The only thing that’s been bringing me home is the fact that my girlfriend still works and lives in the city. I tested the waters with my old man to see what he’d think of me being up here so much, but I’m realizing that as he ages he doesn’t seem to mind having an extra strong young hand to help upkeep the place. It saves his tired back and allowed things to get done in much quicker fashion than normal where we only had a day and a half a week to get the marine rail systems set up, the docks In and the boathouse cribs fixed up etc etc. for now I’m keeping quite and seeing how long he is cool with me squatting here ?
  11. For Walleye, good god the fall makes you wonder what the heck you were doing for the past 10 months. It’s like a light switch around here all of a sudden your boat will catch 100 Walleye a day. But if you were to go and try to catch them right now you’d be hard pressed to get a limit. bass are finicky this time of year but come October before it gets really really cold, you switch up tactics (it’s nothing like the spring bite) you find fish and you will put up your biggest bags of the year. The trick is finding where the fish are, once you find them you can basically park the boat and more and more giant fish just continue to periodically show up and eat your bait. Spring is a numbers game with suicidal smallies eating basically anything especially the evening and morning top water bite can be absolutely stupid. (I had a 5 casts 17lb topwater bite this spring) while the fall is about those big big bags 20+lbs. I’m sure if we were able to legally fish the spawn it’d be ridiculous. I catch enough monsters incidentally trying to catch early season pike to know that if I was targeting bass I’d easily PB my biggest bags of the year.
  12. can we get a title change to this thread? camp opens soon. Leafs D core looking much much stronger than last year. Really hoping Ceci can take a step forward playing on riellys wing. I think Dermott is going to quickly beat him out of his spot though. That muzzin barrie combo is gonna be nice.
  13. been relying on my electronics to find the smallies, they seem to have moved out off of the edge because of the wild temperature swings up shallow and are easily spotted in 20+fow. Ive simply been dropping a drop shot right on their heads. Ive found a few fish shallow grinding cranks, but more consistent bite is off shore. They are all puking up crayfish big time when i pull them up. The pike are all holding to the liveliest sections of weeds. Any time ive found healthy weeds the pike are holding to them as the majority of milfoil etc is now dying off.
  14. Fatal black bear incidents are extremely rare, in fact I think there have been a few in history. grizzly bear attacks are a whole other story.
  15. agreed...love it when it cools off but its not too cold. Lets you be in the boat all day comfortably.
  16. im headed up for a work weekend thursday morning, hoping to sneak some fishing in early. I think the jerkbait and drop shot bite will be firing.
  17. Last year running from Bobcaygeon down to the narrows it was a perfectly calm glass day, I was running back for weigh in going about 50mph we got south of big island and the entire lake looked like a wash tub, i hit a rogue double up and almost speared it going full teats. There actually wasnt a boat near me for at least a kilometer in any direction. In a small 14 foot or less tinner you wouldnt even be able to drive it easily even if its glass. It gets that weird glass chop where theres 3 footers everywhere.
  18. gannon narrows on a saturday in the summer, holy crap.
  19. these reels have literally gone to complete trash. Ive seen two purchased brand new this year have their drag systems completely fail.
  20. long thread here with lots of info, but I will just give you my 2 cents from my personal experience and that of my buddies that I fish with. My buddies have a penchant for messing around and trying to find cheaper deals. theyve used everything from Lews, Diawa, Abu Garcia, Pfleuger, Quantum and shimano. My one buddy recently bought the Quantum smoke on a recommendation from my other friend who says its great...they are piece of garbage. Dont bother. Dave said he really likes his, so jake bought one because they were on sale (like you are seeing) sure enough after 2 months the things drag is totally failing. Dave claims that his is great, but now his is broken too. The lews...dont waste your time they failed as well. (im a fan of their baitcasters though) Daves a huge fan of the new Diawa spinning reels, but they just came out on the market so theres no telling about their longevity. The guys have always been a fan of the pfleuger reels. They seem to be a decent low price option. Not sure Id drop a lot of money on one though? They seem to hold up over time though. Ive owned, and still own a couple of Abu Reels. They seem to hold up, the revo SX I had back in the day is still kicking. I sold it to a buddy of mine, its held up for 10 years! Then you come to shimano, and specifically the stradic. I have slowly been acquiring stradics to fill out my arsenal over the years, Ive got a 3000fi, a 3000fj and 3 Ci4+s The worst thing that has happened is that the 3000fi which is an absolute work horse for me, its bail spring evenually failed. I also then noticed recently it was grinding a bit on retrieve so i cleaned it out and greased it. Other than that, not a single one has failed on me, the drags on all of them is absolutely bulletproof, and furthermore the stradics drag system in general is one of the smoothest most consistent and adjustable drag systems I have ever used. So my reco? Go with a stradic and never look back. Clean em out every so often and youll have an incredible reel that will last you for the next 20+ years. This is coming from a guy who is on the water fishing his reels over 300 hours a year.
  21. fished lake of bays september 2nd last year, bass were hard on the shiner bite. suspending out in 50fow
