Muskie Fishing on a spinning reel and medium rod
johnnyb replied to SirWhite's topic in General Discussion
Appropriate sized spinning gear is the key phrase here....I don't think the OP is talking about going and getting a beefy spinning outfit, but rather, putting heavier line on his all-round medium class combo. -
I just re-read your technical info again, Lew....actually re-re-re-read it ...good stuff to keep in mind. One question -- do you pay attention to water temperature? If so, have you found more active fish in a certain temperature range? The reason I thought of it was that you were in 7-8FOW....I would've thought that would be pretty warm for big fish like that....so I thought I'd ask

Muskie Fishing on a spinning reel and medium rod
johnnyb replied to SirWhite's topic in General Discussion
Even if you're just going for one weekend of musky fishing....don't risk your tackle or the fish's well-being....nothing wrong with having a new combo....and if you decide it's not for you, sell it on the board. Difference between what you spent and what you sell it for = tackle rental fee -
I bought the Shimano Coriolis(?) many years ago, which has since been replaced by the Cardiff. Maybe it wasn't a Coriolis....but I know it was replaced with the Cardiff. It went a solid ten years with no hiccups, and I would say that I abused it...in that I never opened it once....never gave it any grease....never cleaned it. Now...I wasn't out there pounding the water every weekend for muskies either....but I still gave that reel a lot of time over the years. I still have it. One of my fishing partners grabbed a Cardiff....I really like it. Going with a Cardiff is a great idea...sturdy....casts well...will last long enough for you to decide just how crazy you want to get about the great Lunge....and leaves you some $$ for line, net, cutters, etc. *Edit* - Oh and btw, my reel is the 300 series...great size for casting all day

What is the best way to untangle a baitcaster birdnest?
johnnyb replied to okumasheffield's topic in General Discussion
I like the term "professional override" Definitely going to use that....if I ever need to of course I tried the "thumb trick" once....and stripped the gears inside my reel. Now...it was a 12 year old bantam crossfire that I got with the rod for $50 way back when it was new....had never been serviced or even opened....but still. When I held the spool down and gave it a crank, I felt something give....then when it came time to start reeling, the handle turned and the spool didn't. I no longer use the thumb trick. -
Saw this on Lake Dalrymple this weekend!

I was thinking he made it himself....or had someone make it. Just seems more like a photoshop creation than a legitimate gov't sign. That, plus, why would they put the sign on his dock? Ah well.....I'm with Terry....we go flip his dock and see what he flips back -
I fish out of two different tinners....an 8hp and a 9.9hp....motors are almost always on....either trolling....puttering along shore...or "running". (I use that term loosely, considering the hp we're talking about here ) Now, being a weekend warrior only....I'd have to say that 20-25 hrs a season would be a generous estimate. If I had a trolling motor....that would easily be cut in half.

LOL Rick -- you don't need special scissors....regular ones will do just fine. I grab the 3 pk. of Wiltshire cheapies when CanTire puts'em on sale for $6 or $8. They work just fine....wait till you're jigging deep water with this stuff....you feel everything

Awesome stuff....thanks for sharing

I think roping off the swimming area your family uses is really not a bad idea....keeps things nice and simple. I think his sign is fake....not stolen from the MNR....certainly not posted by the MNR. No question I'd be casting to that big dock with the waterslide though....gotta be some fish under there. -
Great stuff....and great info! Those are some seriously impressive fish
-
Awesome stuff right there....thanks for sharing Mike

Gotta love it....thanks for sharing Love the fireworks

Oh...another handy feature of the board is the Search function. You can actually search for all threads related to Chandos....then go catch a pile of fish....post a report...look like an expert, and soon everyone will be asking YOU what to do
-
Well...the canoe doesn't look THAT short....but it definitely looked like a great day on the water
-
Welcome aboard, Bentley! How long have you been on Chandos? I've never fished it, but heard good things about it....what are you trying to target? Do you have access to a boat? Some of these details might help people give you more accurate info. Nobody is likely to give specific spots, but could at least point you in the direction of what structure to look for. As for ice fishing, you should get a copy of the fishing regulations....easy to find on line or at your local bait/tackle shop, or even Canadian Tire. REally...you shouldn't even be fishing without having consulted the regs for any special rules you need to be aware of. Good luck....hopefully someone chimes in....and hopefully you can share some of your success with us

Nicely done! Lots of boat traffic on Sparrow, but it's an impressive fishery
