  1. Thanks Fang and TMH for the info, definitely a reason for me to make the trip to wallymart.
  2. WTG Dawg, good to hear you got onto some fish with the crowds My first thoughts were what the heck is G doing with all the northern clothing on, but then figured you were sparing us the envious thoughts of warm weather fishing. Hmmm, I smell frying fish. Great looking fence as others have mentioned. Stan
  3. Sure doesn't sound good. If that's correct, why the heck does one need more than 20 brookies for anyways?
  4. Maureen, you can put me down for it as well. PM me the details too.
  5. Greg, good to see you getting on them again with your report. The first of many I hope. Congrats to your daughter on the 20 lber definitely sounded fun. I read the report and read it in a way that suggested the one you're holding in the first pic is the 20 lber. Correct me if I'm wrong or did I miss something?
  6. BTW Welcome to the OFC family.
  7. Good to hear your back onto the route to recovery! Stan
  8. Better yet, spread out the fish guts on a flat steel plate left on the ice and see what happens to the animals that go to lick up the entrails. (hmm, wet tongue on frozen steel). Pack a camera! Sorry, brain fart.
  9. My condolences to his family and friends.
  10. KF The hut issue was answered. Easiest solution if you're planning on leaving the hut unattended (or not), just call them and get a hut number, it's free and takes 5 mins. Is there negative impact? (to the environment I'm assuming you are referring to) If a fish died underwater, what do you think would be the first to go? My bet: the guts and the eyes. I've seen it first hand with many of my past dead aquarium fish. And all the other fish keep on going around doing their own business afterwards. Attracting dangerous animals. Well, if the remains were on ice, I could see that being an issue. But if you chop up the pieces and sent them back down the hole, the animals will have to break through the ice to get to them. Just don't leave a mess on the ice and use a bucket and shovel to wash the blood back down the hole too. I use the green bin when I clean fish at home. It just makes sense. Plus, you might have a bit better luck with the fishing after chumming the hole, it would attract smaller fish that would chow down on the remains, thus possibly bringing in larger fish. Stan
  11. Well I got a quick answer from MNR (at the bottom) to the following emailed message: Dear Conservation Officer, I was hoping to see if I could get some insight on following. During ice fishing, if I wished to gut the fish and possibly de-scale the fish what is the proper method to dispose of the fish's internal parts? Is it alright to cut them up and put them back down the hole or must I dispose of them in a plastic bag and place it in the garbage at shore? I am aware of the fact that the fish would need to be identifiable with a glance thus the head, fins, and de-scaled skin would still be intact and still connected to the fish until I got home. Ecologically, I think I should put the guts back down the hole as opposed to sending more garbage to a landfill. But I just wanted to know just in case I ever get questioned on the ice. 12. Hi all, I had saw this question come up on another board and have yet to see an answer to it, so I'd like to ask the knowledgeable anglers on this board. Is it alright to put the internal organs of a cleaned fish back down the ice hole or must I take it back and put it in the garbage can back on shore. To me, ecologically it is more sound to put the guts back down the hole as opposed to to a landfill site. But I haven't been able to locate info in the regs on the disposal of fish guts. BTW, I've emailed "ask the CO" to see what is their take on it. Stan
  13. That was funny, they sound like they do and the probably have a pet hawk to keep the small wildlife population down, taking down the pigeons at the same time Time to email Minister Donna Cansfield and let her in on the joke of the communication situation. Oh, just thought, she probably has been the one sending out the messenger pigeons from Toronto thru Lew's pet hawk area.
  14. Thank you Steve. (It pretty much just confirms what I've said from the beginning )
  15. Good to hear that he seems in good spirits. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Stan
  16. Big Cliff, although it has been posted before, it still brings a smile to my face when I read it. How true it is indeed, thx.
  17. Fish Farmer, I guess my portable hut was just under the size limit and they told me if I planned to remove it each time then I don't need the number unless I'm leaving it out. They told me the number is a permanent number for the hut and is good for anywhere in Ontario, but I will need to inform them if I'm moving it to another district for ice fishing. So I got a number just in case.
  18. Eric, that looks very nice indeed, let us know how it works out with some fish pics .
  19. I was told by MNR, if it is being left out on the ice unattended, then yes it needs to be registered. BTW, I had the same setup.
  20. Thanks Terry for the clarification. I stand corrected. It was the impression I had when I finished talking to the MNR rep.
  21. I've had a chance to try Skype (VoIP), which is a free program. Too bad not eveyone has it, otherwise all my calls would be free anywhere in the world (it's free for skype to skype accounts but not to non-skype). It sounds great over the LD to Japan, even better than a local call. BTW who here also has Skype? I just switched my office's phone lines to Rogers' home phone in Aug last year, not a problem and saving about 1/2 of what I was paying Bell. Bell wouldn't even try to match pricing. So bye-bye Bell.
  22. Any hut left on the ice without someone physically occupying it would also need a number regardless of the size. It's not a money grab, just a so that it keeps ice anglers honest when it comes time to clean up. If it's left after thaw or after the zoning time limit, the registered owner would be fined for littering. (or something down that line of thinking)
  23. At last check, the hut registration was free. (This was 1.5 weeks ago). Unless you are a commercial ice hut owner.
  24. Congrats Mike and happy belated New Year to you too.
  25. Welcome to OFC Squiggs. Nice for you to join us, especially with the ice conds info.
