  1. Working... woot.

  2. When I started out fly fishing, we'd just use regualar old mono in the beginning for leaders, just 4lb or whatever it was that was on our spinning reels. I've since used leaders and leader material because it seems to be straighter, but I haven't actually fly fished in years. That's my pledge for this season, to dust off the rod and break out the old Made in USA medalist and get back on the water. If you really want a tough durable reel, find one of those old Pfluegers off of eBay that were made in the US, bulletproof and quite a few reproduction parts available for them.
  3. Good work, whew, that was painful. Panic attack. lol.
  4. Looking for a place to throw my 12 footer in between Barry's Bay and Petawawa tomorrow. Just found out at the last minute I have to run up there and back but figure i might as well do some fishing. Up for fishing for anything, pickerel, pike whatever, just want to catch some fish... Bodies of water suggestions are great, not expecting your secret spots or anything. Thanks... EDIT: Was thinking of fishing Round Lake, just between the two because of easy access...
  5. Looking at possibly moving to the Orangeville area, how is the fishing there? I fished the Notawasaga (?sp) in Baxter once, years ago but other than that I have no idea how the fishing is, what fish are there or what bodies of water are good. I think I read there is a fly shop there, so I assume fly fishing must be big? Any info is greatly appreciated.
  6. Saw them at Bass Pro last week. I have a friend who still swears by them. He has fished them since we were teenagers and he catches lots of fish on them so you can't argue with the results.
  7. I understand there are pickerel in Little Lake... in Peterborough...
  8. Im that guy too and I rebuilt the card on a 63 Johnson last year, no problem. In fact, it started on the second or third pull after sittin all winter so it must have been alright... haha. Find a manual/ diagram and go for it! DISCLAIMER: My motor is a 3HP and I probably just got lucky, haha.
  9. Oh, I thought this thread was about football, not soccer. lol.
  10. Haven't targeted Crappie since I moved to Canada and haven't ever targeted Perch. Going to go fishing for the day on Monday, anyone know of any lakes that hold them near Apsley or in the Kawartha Highlands? Not looking to portage or anything, looking for a place with a boat launch. Not trying to steal any secret spots either, I know how that is... Just trying to see how prevalent the populations are. Thanks.
  11. In West Virginia about ten years ago when I was writing for the newspaper there, we had some kids playing in a creek and a muskie attacked them. Was going crazy in the water, something wrong with it. The adult with them ended up beating muskie over the head with a board. I don't know why it didn't just swim away, but definitely happened. Those are tiger muskie though (pike muskie cross), but close enough to what is here.
  12. I have to admit, I'm a fair weather OFC'er. Once fishing is over, I spend all of my time on the West Virginia football and basketball message boards. Love it when i'm here though.
  13. The back road map books are the best from what I've found, unless it is an unmapped portage. Best $60 I've ever spent (just because I've bought it three times, trying to keep track of this one, lol)
  14. Last weekend we carried my 12 ft. aluminum tank in to a lake near Apsley while my brother in law drove his XL7 down the trail with the canoe on top. Needless to say, a 3/4 mile hike down a snow mobile trail I wouldn't take my two wheel drive pickup down was a pain in the neck. We didn't want to carry it back out, so we strapped the paddles to the luggage rack, loaded the boat and ratcheted down the front, back and one around the middle and it went fine. Actually held on better than the canoe. I'd go 2x4 though, the oars were a little too wide and hit a couple of trees, haah.
  15. So I am primarily a bass fisherman who does some trout fishing when the bass season is closed and am the reigning champion when it comes to "Word Pickerel Fisherman Ever". So, I was thinking of hitting one of the deep lakes in the Kawartha Highlands and trying to catch some Lake Trout on Monday since I have the day off... I read that there is a deep three way rig that people use to troll around 50 feet... is that the right idea? 6lb. test and a medium rod? Does that make sense? Any help or direction would be appreciated.. as always... Thanks, Wask
  16. Where can you even buy bear spray? I thought it was illegal to carry Pepper Spray, along with any other thing used in the protection of ones self?
  17. This is true... does the same apply if the spawn is over? Does fishing for OOS become OK if it is done? Does it then become excusable or permissible? Just playing devil's advocate...
  18. There are several lakes I've been eyeing for a couple of years, but you have to hike in as there is no road access to them at all. It's a good haul, 2-3 miles. The hike isn't the big deal, but I don't want to carry the water in with me for the day. I thought a water purification system would be best, but there are so many options, I don't know what is best. I'll only be using it a dozen times a year or so. I hear tablets make the water disgusting to the point of undrinkable (although safe) and the pumps are stuff are $50+++ Im not unwilling to pay the $50ish price, but which ones are simplest/ cheapest? Could I bear the tablets? I saw there is also some stuff called Pristine that is a liquid and not tabs. Thanks in advance,
  19. My wife had a fender bender last night and needs some body work. Sadly we have to go through insurance for one reason or another. The two truck guy suggested Car Star in Port Perry. They seem to be a chain, but I know nothing about them? Anyone have any experience with them? Anyone you would suggest in Port Perry or even Durham? I can always tow it back to Ptbo I guess, but I don't have much good experience with any body shop around here. Thanks! Wask
  20. I'm glad you posted that, I guess I'll have to put it off until next year then. Don't see it happening this weekend for me. Oh how I miss trout fishing all seasons in West Virginia...
  21. Haven't trout fished in years, was wondering if there were any trout streams around Peterborough or withing a couple of hours of here. Preferably something wadable with some good fish ... just like my ole' West Virginny home... Thanks in advance (while i would appreciate the name of a stream that will hold trout this fall and even most of the time, I don't expect GPS coordinates for your honey hole) Thanks!
  22. I understand the fear of abusers, but in the end, not naming it on OFC probably isn't going to make a big difference. I like the idea of knowing what body of water certain fish are caught in. In fact, I'm still relatively new in Canada and this board has been a big help. I think too it's important that if I want to disclose a body of water I fish on that i should be able to. For instance, I posted a report about Long Lake in Apsley a few weeks ago. Got a message from another member on here about how they went canoeing there after reading my report, caught some fish and had a great day. That's one of the great features about this board. That being said, I'm not going to give you the GPS coordinates of where I caught the fish, or the exact structure I was fishing or anything like that. I'm also not willing to give up the smaller water I fish and the honey holes that are on it where I know I can catch fish most of the time. (I have found it hilarious to see guys post pics, especially of carp, and photoshop the background out, I know why they do it, but still cracks me up) Just my .02, not trying to give you a hard time...
  23. So I've been a bass fisherman all of my life, moving up here from the south. The only other fishing I had done was some small stream trout fishing with small spinning rods and fly fishing. Now i've been here for a few years and have avoided really getting set up to fish for pickerel and musky, mainly out of ignorance and not looking for help. I've caught a grand total of one of each, neither on purpose. What setups do I need for these fish? Pickerel My understanding is just a spinning reel for pickerel, does the rod type matter? Line size? Musky I have a Shimano Corsair with a 7ft MH Gorilla Stick and 17LB test. Will that do the trick? I have a roll of Steel-on leader material, can I just tie my leaders from that stuff? Yeah, I'm a newbie about all of this stuff, thanks for the tips, sorry for all of the questions...
  24. www.joesoldlures.com f150online.com flytyeronline.com wvangler.com OFC that's about it for me, but there are others I hit from time to time as well, but mainly when I need specific info on something. OFC is really unique. I've been on the net for a long time and been parts of many forums/ message boards living and dead and this is a unique group of people to co exist and get along so well (for the most part). I know its a lot of work to keep up, thanks to the mods for all they do.
  25. Man, I drive a Ford. That's why I don't drive a Chevy. Blue Oval for Life. In all seriousness, my 78 Mustang caught on Fire, so all companies have their issues, lol I did drive a Geo Prizim, which i think was GM for a couple of years and it was great. However, my last truck was a 94 Ranger that had about 200,000 MILES on it when I scrapped it because it needed a new engine (my fault, first vehicle that I was responsible for the service, I missed some, so my bad) and box and my current truck is an 04 F150 that I bought with 9k Miles on it and I've had almost 0 problems with it, knock on wood. While I like the Xterra a lot and don't classify it as a truck, I really don't understand why people buy foreign trucks. Buying foreign cars I can understand. Gas mileage, dependability, INFLATED public reputation. Buying foreign trucks makes no sense to me when the Ford, Dodge and even GM trucks have been solid for years. I'll never buy a foreign truck. (I think the Xterra is actually built in Tennessee)
