I got skunked the last time I was there (it was in the late fall though) so don't feel too bad. I am convinced that there are no fish in that lake Tony

I think the fishing will improve as the water continues to warm up. I think it will really pick up once they finish spawning as well, should be soon. Tony

I've heard some reports that fish are being caught out deep in the western basin. It can't hurt to try, start trolling in about 140' and work your depths heading deeper until you connect... That being said, I think it's a steady NW wind so it could bring fish in tighter to shore... You gotta just experiment until you find something that works. Have fun out there! Tony

Yikes... There are so many companies competing for your business out there, why take a chance with a company with known failures in the past? Hopefully you learned your lesson this time. Tony

I don't see why not, make sure it is closed cell foam so it doesn't absorb the water. Perhaps someone with more experience in the marine flotation department can help though...? Tony

That's just not right... Gill nets need to be tended to on an almost hourly basis. The trap nets are usually set and left for a night but that's about it. After too long the Pike will end up eating everything caught in the trap net Let us know how it goes with the MNR, sounds like media attention will light a fire under the arses of the MNR out that way Tony

You too, don't forget the sunblock, bug juice, and cold beverages Tony

fire ban lifted, just in time for long weekend
tonyb replied to walleyejigger's topic in General Discussion
Were they trying to curtail the blaze by creating a burn swath when it got out of control? I picture in my head a bunch of guys in green running around with pails of water for some reason Tony -
Good to hear things went fairly well for you. It is never a good thing to have any type of surgery. I have heard that drinking a lot of tea can contribute to kidney stones, are you a tea drinker? Tony

No problem Ken, glad to share my knowledge to help other people out. It's actually good to know the fish pathology class I studied at Fleming is actually being put to practical use Lymphocystis and Lymphosarcoma affected areas should be removed from fish you are going to eat. Other parasites like trematodes (yellow grubs, black spot) can all be consumed safely by humans with no health issues. However, most people release fish that are heavily infected and look bad, myself included Stay away from fish that have roundworms in them (long thread-like worms in the flesh, usually reddish in colour) I'm pretty sure these can complete their life-cyle as adults in humans. I have only ever seen these worms in Herring caught on Lake Nippissing. Tony

That's great news! I have passed along the news release to my brother in-law and buddy who are going camping in that area this weekend. They'll be happy to know they will be able to have a proper shore lunch. That is...if they catch anything Tony -
Wadsworth Lake information (re: in season fish)
tonyb replied to kayak fisher's topic in General Discussion
Wadsworth Lake lies within Division 15. You can find the full regulations at http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/pubs/pubmenu.html#fish Division 15 is located on Map C Have fun! Tony -
Panther Martins... J-7 Rapala... Ahh nevermind you're going to a ZEC, you should be able to catch em with cigarrette butts Have a great trip! looking forward to the report when you get back. Tony

For steelheading? ***Depends on the depth you are fishing and the clarity of the water. Longer leads when the water is clear and deep, not necessary in stained water. For bass? ***Are bass that finicky? I guess 6' is plenty... Can you use a swivel to connect the main line and the leader line? Yeah but a uni-to-uni knot casts easier through your guides than a 2-way swivel. Is two foot leader enough for bass or walleye on clear water? 6' Minimum, so if you need to re-tie you have enough leader to work with. For pike or musky, will stainless steel leader spook the fish? Pike and Musky are not very line shy, and there are better leaders out there. Look up titanium leaders, even better are the heavy fluorocarbon leaders in 130lb test (They don't damage the fish if it decides to roll in the line). Stringease tackle makes some nice leaders with high-quality snaps and swivels already tied. How strong is a 20 or 30lb florocarbon leader? Will the teeth of pikes break it? How big is the pike? Go heavier if you anticipate larger fish, minimum 50lb test fluorocarbon. P.S. Next time, use the SEARCH feature. These questions have been answered many times before. This is your only get out of jail free response Tony

Hate to beat a dead horse but...fluor question
tonyb replied to ssauvain's topic in General Discussion
Link to the perfection loop for those interested, like me http://www.cabelas.com/information/cabelas...ction-Loop.html Tony -
Walleye commonly carry Lymphocystis, and it looks like this: Pike and Muskellunge commonly carry Lymphosarcoma which looks similar to what the Carp has but it is a different type of viral infection. Lymphosarcoma looks like this: Yummy! Tony

Looks like a plain old, run of the mill, bacterial infection. I've seen the same thing with other bottom feeders including Brown Bullhead and Freshwater Drum. All it takes is a small cut or abrasion to remove scales or the protective slime coating on fish and they become prone to bacterial infections. Tony

Tried a new fluorocarbon line, I don't like it!
tonyb replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
They were likely moving out of the way of your float and shot, not the flourocarbon leaders. Tony -
Gas prices will continue to rise. We need to consider other means of transportation, what about horse and carriage? Tony

It really depends on the application. For example if I am fishing steelhead in a river I would prefer to use monofilament (PLine, Berkley Trilene XL) If I was jigging for walleye or lake trout, bottom fishing carp, or casting lures into heavy cover for bass I would use a braided line (Power Pro, Rapala Titanium braid). If I was trolling for salmon on Lake ontario in the middle of summer I would use Cortland flea flicker line or 7-strand stainless steel wire line to avoid problems with spiny water flea build-up. It all depends...and gives you more reasons to buy more rods and reels Tony

It's a big lake, just have some versatility in your gear to target from shallow to deep (shallow being 15-20'). Temagami means deep water near shore in Ojibway Have fun and take lots of pics, it's a very pretty part of the province. Tony

I have paddlefish envy now...very nicely done on the mixed bag of unusual species! Tony

Yeah but how many jigs or other lures do you break off when you get snagged on bottom
