Have weather forecasts ever been accurate?
lew replied to okumasheffield's topic in General Discussion
When I want to go fishing and it starts to rain, I just put on a rainsuit and go anyways But your right about the forecasts, I never put much faith in them either. -
Hey guys, it's getting near to that time of year where I'm starting to make out my wish-list for Santa Claus and I'm thinking a GPS unit would be nice for the truck and thought I'd see what you folks that use them regularily think is a decent one. I use Lowrance in my boat for both my sonar & GPS units but it seems for a car most folks lean towards Garmin but it doesn't really matter to me. I don't need fancy and am thinking in the $200-250 range and want at least a 4.3" screen. Just need something where I can type in an address and have that little voice tell me which way to turn and maybe the location of different gas stations and that sorta thing when I'm lost on a dark stormy night and can't find the boat ramp. Also if you could please, I'm in Toronto and wonder who has the best prices ?? I've looked on the websites for Radioworld and The Source and they seem pretty decent Also, I don't want to buy from ebay as I much rather have it in my hand before I purchase anything. Any thoughts ?? http://www.thesource.ca/estore/category.as...um=1&sort=1

Dang Dawg, that hurt just reading the story. Been there, done that so I know what you went thru bud .....not alot of fun Good to see you re-couped though and went on to have a great day on the water.

For those of you that don't know Corey (mistyjr1) he's only 15 years old but is one of the finest fishermen I've had the pleasure of sharing my boat with and is as good or even better than some of those I've fished with who are are many many years older than him. Corey and I have fished together a few times on the West Arm of Nippissing and he's excellent with a net on big fish...... (he netted the one on my avatar) ..........and as I said above, he's also becoming pretty darned good at catching muskies too and I think were all gonna see some very impressive fish come from this young angler in the years to come. Lookin forward to netting a biggun for you at Lakair next August Corey

I've already told you once today Corey, but it's worth repeating, congrats on the PB Your getting to be a pretty darned good musky fisherman !!
-
WTG Shawn, that's a very impressive pickeral and good to hear your back is healing. You'll be laying a beating on those mosnster Quinte eyes in another month.
-
Boyz & their toyz, ya gotta love it. WTG Ernie and congrats on the purchase, that's a sweet looking boat, but after reading your signature I'm surprised to see that Evinrude hanging off the stern
-
Thanks for that Sean, you always post some of the best fishing stories & pictures on this board and this one was no exception !! Some excellent fish there too, congrats to the pair of youz.

If Pete gets his 59"er, Rich, I'm pretty sure there'll be a report
-
It'll be a good couple of days Pete. Gimme a call at home when you get the motel info and I'll see you down there next Monday.

Awesome stuff Bud !! Too bad you don't have room for a 24" Dawg in that yak

Just an FYI guys, but catching muskies in tight to shore is certainly not unusual, infact it's extremely common. We regularily get them from a boat casting very tight towards the shore, infact many of our fish come from within 2' of shore in only a couple feet of water. I once got a 50"er in 1' of water and he was almost touching the shore. Not much difference really from casting in tight to shore from a boat, or standing on shore and casting out and then retrieving back to shore. The 1st musky my wife ever got was a 43"er from the dock on only the 2nd cast of the morning, infact anyone who has ever met my wife has heard the story many many times When we fish on Lake St. Clair in the fall we see shore bound fishermen bringing in BIG muskies on a regular basis. I'm not trying to diminsh the accomplishment of Sharper, infact it's an extremely nice fish he got, I'm just letting you know that if you don't have a boat and are looking for muskies you have a very good chance of getting one using that method.

I was PMing a member the other day about drilling idiot in his boat's consol and it came up as drilling idiot. Guess idiot is a no-no ************* It did it again, I'm trying to type the words a h-ole and it keeps coming up as idiot. Maybe I should just go fishing

Good point too Hawg Hunter For those of you that don't know, it's a good idea to pull the prop off your motors, both gas & electric once in awhile and check for fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft. These pigs throw throw their old line in the water and if it wraps around your prop shaft it can tear the seals and and let water into the lower units and cause all kinds of problems......$$$$$$

Kudos to you Bill for cleaning up after those pigs. I fish Chemong Lake quite a bit and there's a free boat ramp on the west end of the causeway. It's an excellent concrete ramp too, with a good dock beside it and a big parking lot, but everytime I go there I feel like I'm in the town dump. It's unbelievable the amount of crap that people throw on the ground, both from their cars when they arrive, to the stuff from their boats at the end of the day before they head home. I arrived there at sunrise a couple years back and there were 3 guys who I assumed had been fishing from shore all night. They had garbage on the ground all around them, plus a bunch of junk on the roof of the car. They loaded their gear in the car as they were getting ready to leave and just knocked all the stuff from the roof of the car to add to the pile on the ground. I walked over and suggested they pick up their mess, cause neither myself or anyone else wanted to look at it. They said they had no choice cause there weren't any garbage cans around. I said that seeing as they didn't mind transporting the stuff from home, they shouldn't mind transporting it BACK home again. They mumbled something about me minding my own business but they eventually threw all the crap in the trunk and left, but that's the attitude that far too many people have lately. I'm not sure who maintains that ramp and collects all the crap everyday........maybe Bridgenorth ??.........but I'm guessing one of these days I'm gonna arrive at the ramp and find out I have to pay $$$$ to use it now and I won't be the least bit surprised. Somebody has to be payed to pick up the mess and I'm pretty sure ALL fishermen will be footing the bill because of the slobs. I just hope the pigs that caused the trouble will understand too. It's funny too cause I actually posted a question here on this board a few years back and asked for any of our members who throw their crap on the ground to please explain to the rest of us why they do it, but surprisingly not a single pig responded.

A nice chunky fish, congratulations on your 1st ever musky.

A purdy fish indeed, congrats to you on the PB !!

With the cooler water temps this time of year, I like to go with larger, slower moving wooden baits for casting and have always found Suicks to be one of the best baits around for that application. I use the 10" weighted Suicks and actually add more of my own weights to the body to make them practically neutrally buoyant. I'll cast out and as I'm working the bait slowly back to the boat, I like pause it every 10' or so and just let it hang for a few seconds before I move it again. It's an action the muskies can seldom resisit.

Are we crazy or are we obsessive in fishing
lew replied to Reel Trouble's topic in General Discussion
Best of luck today TroutnMuskieHunter, and hopefully you nail a real pig !! The Ottawa River is a favorite musky spot for me too, but unfortunately I never got out that way this year. First time in about 5 years I've missed it but will be back next year for sure.. -
Purple with gold blades in the fall ?? .........surley you jest !! You'll NEVER catch a fall musky with that set-up Pete, the blades are too small

Being retired and spending most of my time at the lake when everyone else is working, I too spend alot of time fishing alone and really enjoy it and am often on the lake 10-12 hours a day with nobody to talk to 'cept the odd passing seagull. I always have a cell phone with me & GPS if I need to give my location to anyone, but have never been one to wear a PFD even though I know it's a foolish thing to do. I fish the West Arm of Nippissing at least a couple weeks a year and was out there alone in September 2 or 3 years ago on a very rough day. I looked around and realised how fast I could be in trouble if I went in the drink with no boats anywhere on the lake and not a cottage in sight and me being miles from camp. I put on a PFD and then fished from the lower level of the boat rather than the raised casting deck and immediately felt much safer and now nearly always wear a PDF when I'm alone in the boat on rough days. Might not save my butt next time but it sure can't hurt. And Dave, landing a big musky by yerself is the easy part........trying to get a picture of it and have the whole fish centered in the camera is the hard part
-
Best of luck in your new location and hopefully you get moved in without too many problems. It can be quite a shock to the system trying to get used to new digs. Out of my 32 years as a fireman here in Toronto, I spent 25 of those years in the same firehall and you sure do get settled in after awhile, almost like a 2nd home.

Thanks for taking the time to post this great fish'n tale & congrats on your 1st ever musky too !!
