  1. Everybodies posting a recap of their fish'n adventures this year and it's great to see what everyone did over the last season. I've mentioned it here before, but I spose I've been fishing for so long now, I just don't really find the need to take fish pictures anymore cause after awhile, all the fish sorta look the same, 'cept some are bigger or prettier than the others, or there's a good story to go with them. To me it's more about the experience, rather than the catch now, and I'd just as soon have a picture of the sunrise or sunset, or an eagle sitting in the tree. I sure do enjoy looking at everybody else's pictures though. I spent most of the summer at the trailer but travelled to the West Arm of Nippissing 3 times and had another trip to the St. Lawrence, plus a run down to St. Clair for a couple days but the huge winds messed that up for us. We got alot of muskies this year, but I think I only took 2 pictures the entire season and they were both on the West Arm and I've posted them both here before. This girl came just after sunrise on opening morning last June. And this one came in August a couple miles away. And it's an even better day, when you can help a friend land a 50"er I spend many many hours on the water and sometimes feel like I live on my boat, and am fortunate to do quite well, but to me now, this is what I'd rather take pictures of. Hope everyone else had a great season too !!
  2. All the best bud, were with ya !! If you wanna get slimed at Lakair in June, I've got a seat for you. And I don't mean those little snot rockets either
  3. I needed a bit of work done on my boat this past summer and the marina quoted me $300 for a "couple" hours work plus parts. Another marina quoted me $100 plus parts for the same job. Turns out I can probably do it myself in about 90 minutes. I'd suggest you get a couple quotes before signing on the dotted line.
  4. Pretty sure Jigger rebuilt his boat , including his casting deck and included step-by-step pics to go along with it. Did an excellent job too !!
  5. Sheesh Brian, by 6 am I'm already back from fish'n and ready for lunch
  6. Not to take this excellent thread too far off topic, but I've had a house trailer up near Peterboro for the last 34 years and we always heard coyotes in the fields behind us, usually very early in the morning before sunrise. About 10 years ago they suddenly disappeared and we never heard them again until this past summer when they returned full strength and we now often hear them howling again. Were over run with deer up there now and I'm thinking perhaps that's what's drawing them back again.......bring your gun up Brian, you could have a deer field day I hafta admit though, it's kinda nice to be sitting on the deck at 3:00 AM, sipping on the mornings 1st coffee, and listening to mother nature in all her wonderful glory !!!!
  7. I'm no wolf expert and I'm certainly not trying to stir the proverbial pot, but I must admit I find it hard to believe a wolf can stand 5 feet, let alone 4 feet tall at the shoulder when he's standing flat on all 4's. A 5' tall wolf would be the size of a cow. Sure would like to see a picture or some documentaion about that critter. Any good photos Dan ??
  8. Nobody said they weren't any muskies in there, and johnnyb was just making a joke when he used my name, but I think the jist of this thread is that there doesn't seem to be as many muskies in the bay as many folks would expect, considering the large populations of them at either end of Quinte.......both coming & going.
  9. There's always the odd report of pike being caught in the western Kawarthas and I spose they are gradually working their way eastward, but certainly not enuff to classify it as an invasion........yet. There's also scattered reports every year of tigers in there too so there's definetely some inter breeding going on too.
  10. There's some very big muskies that live in the rivers that flow into Quinte, infact only a few miles away, so it would stand to reason that they'd be more plentiful in the Bay, yet there are surprisingly few reports of them. I've been fishing Quinte since 1955 and have spent alot of time over the years fishing for pike there, yet I have never hooked a musky, never had a follow or even seen one, infact I've never even talked to anyone personally who's caught one there. But then again, howcum in the 100 years since the locks were built, the pike from Quinte have never found their way up into the eastern Kawarthas ?? Stange stuff indeed
  11. I painted up a couple baits this week for the river in a somewhat rainbow pattern allthough they don't show too well in this picture. Tops are a silvery grey, sides are pink and the bellies are white and I'm hoping they'll be effective. Top one is 13" with the lip and runs deep and the other is a 10" Jake We'll see what happens

  13. Good to hear your gonna be joining us Corvette
  14. I've marched in more than a few parades in my day, mostly military, and I hafta tell ya, there's few things in this world that get the blood pumping better than marching to the beat of the drum and the skirl of the pipes, specially when your stepping out right behind them !! Makes a feller real proud !!
  15. Don't know how your holding your baitcaster singingdog, but I see alot of folks who are new to them holding the rod handle behind the reel, and that will definetely get tiring after awhile with the weight of the reel trying to turn the rod over. Try palming the reel and actually hold on to it rather than the rod itself. Kinda hard to explain, but you hook 2 fingers under the rod near the trigger, below the reel seat, then the other 2 fingers go around and under the front of the reel, and then your thumb goes over the top of the sideplate. This way, the whole setup is gripped firmly and it actually becomes an extension of your arm and is very easy and comfortable to use all day long with little or no fatique, and also, the rod will not be trying to turn over with the weight of the reel on top. Give it a try and I think you'll find a huge difference. For anyone else thinking of trying them for the 1st time but are concerned about them, baitcasters are extremely easy to use and no more difficult than a spinning reel, but unfortunately some folks think of them as something intimidating or difficult and are afraid to use them. Just think of them as another tool in the tacklebox, and it's no more different than adding a new wrench to your tool box. Once you practice for a few minutes and get the hang of them, you'll wonder what you were concerned with

    My 2008

I like your style......great post !! Lookin forward to meeting you on the 13th too.
  17. hmmmm, not sure why Eric but I somehow missed this fish'n report. Congrats, it looks like you had a great day out there in the harbor and landed a good percentage of the fish species that are available
  18. Hopefully it's gonna be a cheap and easy fix Roger, and it'll be interesting to hear what the problem was.
  19. The Bob Johnson Chevy dealership just west of Davidson's on Kingston Road appears to be shut down now too but I have no idea why, and he was also there for a long time too. Sad to see all these good folks losing their jobs.
  20. Looks like a good season to me Mike !! Lotsa fish'n with your dad & sons, 4th place in a tourney, some big Quinte eyes to close the year, and a new boat......... it's just too bad you had to settle for a LUND though, but perhaps next year you can upgrade Nothing wrong with that year Mike, congrats !!
  21. For crankbaits I find the Shimano TE's are about as good as it gets and the CT's are a close 2nd, but for jerkbaits, specially when your working them very fast and want to keep the bait below the surface, you want a faster reel for taking up the slack line in a hurry and for that purpose the large Abu 7000 works perfectly. 400 series reels will do the job, but your cranking twice as fast to keep the line tight and it gets pretty darned tiring after 10-12 hours of tossing 10" baits. The 7000 series reels have large spools that take up alot of line fast with every revolution and the power handle just makes life that much easier too. It's tough to find one reel for all the different jobs, and if your budget allows, your better off with a few different set-ups.
  22. fishinfool, you'll be able to get your answer over at Quintefishing. http://www.quintefishing.com
  23. We were fishing about 10:00 at night a couple years back with a very clear star filled sky, when we spotted a meteor streaking across the sky from the far horizon. We actually watched it for about 5 seconds and then it blew apart right above us and turned into about 8 smaller fireballs that we watched fall towards the ground. A friend was on another lake about 40 miles away and saw the same thing. Absolutely incredible sight.
  24. The X510c is the unit I use Steve and I'm very happy with it. It's accurate and the images are clear, precise and easy to read and it shows hooks with no problem, specially in deeper water. Even at 40 MPH it still reads the bottom well. The only inconsistancy I've noticed is that it doesn't read well in shallow waters and basically just flashes until it gets a bit deeper, but I'm not concerned with that at all cause when I'm in 6 FOW I don't need the sonar anyways. Evidentely this is a common quirk with some of the newer Lowrances and I think it can be rectified with an update, but to me it's not worth worrying about. As mentioned by fishindevil, you can go to the Lowrance website and download the emulator and try it out on your computer. Yes, I'd definetely recommend this unit.......but that's only my opinion.
  25. Thanks for that Jacque, looks like you had an excellent season on the Mighty O. The Ottawa River is a favorite location of mine and we try to do a musky trip up there every year in the Wendover area, but unfortunately didn't make it up this year, but will be back fer sure in 09. Best of luck on the ice this winter.
