  1. Plenty of good folks on this board Skipper and you'll be able to get just about any info you need. We usually have a few different get togethers every year with the guys too and their always lotsa fun. Not meaning to get off topic here, but I was sure I saw this post locked up early yesterday morning, or had I just drank too many coffee's ??
  2. Thanks Hooked, this really is a nice part of Ontario. I'm a couple towns north of Peterboro but get in there every week or 2 and have always enjoyed the place and never had a problem. Maybe I just hang out in better places than some of the other posters. Doesn't really matter what city you go to, your gonna find good and bad sections everywhere, but the good parts of P'Boro far outshine the bad. You'll find most of the big name stores there, plenty of nice restaurants and the houses prices are decent, specially compared to the GTA and there's lots of very nice neighborhoods. As mentioned previously, good jobs are on the rare side but it may be worth your while to do a bit of commuting if necessary. Best part, is 10 minutes outta town and your in the country and surrounded by lakes and farms and no hassles. I'd definetely recommend the area.
  3. I've never tried that style of fishing, but I must admit, that is one snazzy looking fish'n reel !!
  4. When I'm fishing I prefer not to be near anyone else. I usually won't stop within 1000 feet of another boat and like to be treated the same, but obviously that doesn't usually happen in my favor. Buddy and I were out a few years ago on a nice quiet Sunday evening drifting with the current along a line of pencil reeds. Along comes a big fancy bass boat with a couple guys dressed in their finest sponsor shirts and actually stopped no more than 20' down stream of us. I said scuse me, but you just parked your boat exactly where we were casting, and he casually told me that I didn't own the spot. Not a problem though, I just used my troll motor and squeezed between him and the reeds and stopped my boat 10' downstream from HIM. So close infact, I could feel the glare from his eyes. He told me I was being childish now but I guess he got the hint as he fired up his big fancy boat and headed off to harrass other parts of the lake. Never could figure why some folks need to act like that sometimes. Maybe they don't realise that fish'n is sposed to be fun
  5. Great story Capt Bruce and I can't believe all the places you've travelled on your boat. Love the part about the dogs on the dock
  6. I don't think you and Paul leave baits laying around the boat Joey, but it's something you'll have to be thinking about all the time. I know guys who switch baits, throw them on the floor of the boat and the next thing you know, the poor pooch has one in his foot.
  7. Marvin loves a boat ride Joey and would happily cruise around all day, but as soon as I start to speed up he gets nervous. I think it may be from the vibration of the faster speeds. Also, everytime I make a cast he thinks I'm throwing a ball and tries to dive in the drink to retrieve it. So yes, my dog enjoys fishing, but I can only go 1 MPH and I'm not allowed to cast. Just something for you to think about
  8. I loosen all my drags at the end of EVERY day's fishing. Not sure if that's really necessary or not but I've never had a problem with the drag on any reel. Just be sure to tighten them again when you head out next time.
  9. Maybe the electronic gizmos are like the deer whistles that some folks put on their car bumper, they seem to work well until you hit your 1st deer
  10. Haven't seen a mouse since we moved in Paul and we're surrounded by woods, so they seem to work well. As for the pooches, mines in the garage with me all the time with no problems. But I don't have the gizmos in the house and we don't have any mice here either, so who knows
  11. My son was 6' 4" Arron and it seemed like we had to buy him new clothes every 2 weeks while he was growing up...and up...and up... Congrats on the new addition to your family, it's the best thing that can happen.
  12. I've used moth balls for years Rob and have never had a critter take up residence in my boat, even the 10 years it wintered in a barn. When I bought this house there were a few of these gizmos in the garage supposedly to ward off pests and so far, so good. Now if I could just find something to stop the bears from poopin in my backyard
  13. You could very well be right Joe
  14. Just kinda hard to follow things Joe when folks are posting from both sides of the fence.
  15. Sorry Wayne, but I have to agree with Smallie on this one. YOU'RE the one who called this thread Winternet and then you turn around and start posting about building plastic bits for seatbelts. Kinda hard to figure how this post suddenly turned from being winternet to somehow being about you
  16. Hey Phil, I remember one weekend you and me were up north and we were hoping the daytime temps would RISE to -30
  17. That was a fun day for sure Norm, but not because of the ice fishing
  18. I have zero interest in ice fishing, never do it, and use the winter months for other things.
  19. No offence to you personally Dan, but as soon as guys make comments like that is when a post starts the journey down the tube. Threads often go along nice and smooth, then somebody makes a statement about it and all of a sudden...POOF !!
  20. When TJ started this board many years ago he decided not to have seperate pages for non-fishing topics. He liked the idea of having everything on one page. I've been a member of this board going on 10 years now and in that time this website has had several facelifts and even 2 or 3 name changes but it usually got better and now we have something like 7500 members. There's always been different folks over the years who have suggested that we have seperate pages for fishing & non-fishing but the powers that be have no intention of changing it. A rule came into effect several years ago stating that we'll put NF in the title of any thread that isn't about fishing and that way, if your not interested in it, you'll be able to avoid it by not reading it. Problem is though, people will still read the thread, then start complaining about it because it's not fishing related, even though the title probably indicated just that. Next thing you know, a couple more folks jump on the bandwagon and before you know it, the post has gone completely off topic, down the tube and locked up. What's interesting to me may not be interesting to you and visa versa. If you don't find a thread interesting, why not just close the post and move onto something else, rather than ruining it for those that are taking part in the thread and enjoying it ?? I have absolutely ZERO interest in some of the stuff posted around here but when I see those subjects I just move onto something more to my liking. Worst part is guys who post non-fishing things, then complain when somebody else does the exact same thing. We currently have a music thread with around 1000 replies, there's always talk of hockey and car racing, how do I fix my fridge, my air conditioner is broke, guys posting that they need a job, do you agree with seat belts, raising $$$ to help a member and just about every other topic you can think about. Always lots of non-fishing stuff to read, or not read. If you enjoy it, that's good, but if you don't enjoy the topic, why not just move on and not ruin it for those that DO enjoy it But that's all just my opinion.
  21. This has been an interesting discussion that nobody is being forced to take part in Wayne, and has absolutely nothing to do with winternet. And if somebodies fishing post only receives 4 replies, well, there may just be a reason for that.
  22. It's so ironic isn't it ?? We're preached to constantly on how seat belts save lives...which they do...and if we don't wear them we'll be fined, but when it comes to making even MORE money they decide seatbelts AREN'T needed and jam as many standing patrons on a bus as they can shove through the doors. A lady was killed on a Toronto bus last month when they hit a truck, I wonder if she was strapped in ??
  23. Whats really strange is the fact that your given a hefty fine for not wearing a seatbelt in your car, yet your allowed to stand, fully unprotected, on buses subways and streetcars.
  24. I saw alot of nasty stuff over the years but one that always stuck with me was probably 40 years ago and involved a little Volkswagon Beetle and a big ole '67 Pontiac. There were 3 ladies in the Bug with nobody wearing a seat belt and the Pontiac crossed the road (Toronto street) and hit them head-on. The Pontiac probably weighed 3 times as much as the bug and when he hit them he just drove them straight back. The lady in the back seat shot forward between the bucket seats and drove the 2 ladies in front under the dash board, including the driver who was bent around the steering column. The rear seat passenger continued flying thru the windshield, then landed on the roof of the Pontiac, then bounced off the roof and hit the road face first behind the car. It took a long time for us to dismantle the Bug enough to get the women out and when we finally removed the driver her left foot remained in the car where it had been severed by the clutch pedal. All 3 were alive when the ambulances took them away but were all terribly injured. We seldom followed up on things after the fact and I don't know if they survived or not. I don't know what the outcome would have been had the ladies been wearing seatbelts, but I think it would have kept the lady in the back seat and she wouldn't have flown into the front and did so much damage to the others and herself. This is just one story out of many but in my mind anyone who doesn't wear a belt is just plain foolish...but that's just my opinion.
  25. That's lousy news Doug, condolances from my home to yours.
