  1. I'll bide (Or hold my opinion) by the natives rights the day I stop seeing them selling walleye or whatever fish out of the trunks of their cars. I was so pissed at my dad because he was a regular customer of this one native guy. Dad was (He's passed now) a bigger problem then the guy selling the fish; he gave the guy an avenue for income. Dan...
  2. Not to change the subject, but still in storage mode. Do you do anything with your boat's trailer? Suggest putting it on blocks. Blocks under the frame that'll support at least half the travel of the springs free height. Sitting static for any length of time could cause the springs to sag, if all the boat's weight is left on it. Dan..
  3. Do you need too, MAYBE NOT? Does it hurt too, NO Do I recommend it, YES Intake valves and guides on a wet 4 stroke engine's manifold (fuel passing through) does not have any form of protection from condensation, while sitting over the winter; its only seen fuel. Same as direct injected engines, which are famous for accumulating deposits on the back of intake valves, where condensation can be absorbed and turn into something like cement. Giving the intake assembly any form of oily film will also help prevent the formation of oxidation on the shiny bits. When I stored customer's vehicles for the winter, I always fogged them. If there were an issue doing so I would have heard of it. These were the customer's summer time babies. Never had a hung up valve or seized piston ring doing so. Dan..
  4. In a separate fuel container run some 2 stroke oil & fuel mixture through the engine; till she starts to put out smoke. In the spring run Sea Foam through the system to clean out any residual oil carbon deposits that the 2 stroke may have left behind. Crappy sells this stuff. I'd make up a hose to connect to the motor's fuel line and then stuff the other end in the can of fuel. Dan..
  5. All through my public school years, we'd sing God Save the Queen every morning before class. I'm likely 100% wrong here but the Queen gave up the twit to suckle on until Canada could look after itself. Dan...
  6. When the recollection of a trip is so positive; just shows that good things come to good people and good people (Madjack) are willing to share their opportunities. A shot of Crown to everyone that participated in this adventure. I just toasted the computer screen. LOL Dan.
  7. I've been using a Schrade "Old Timer" for the last 20 + years. Yeah it's a long knife but it's so sensitive that you can feel even the smallest of bones as you draw the knife across a ribcage or down the Y-bones of a pike. I've cleaned everything from bluegills, perch, pike to the hard bones of salmon with this knife. It holds its edge every well; with maybe a couple of swipes of a steel between sharpening's. When doing finesse cleaning, like on the Y-bones of pike, I'll hold the knife kind of back-assed but it adds to the sensitivity of the handle. Only had it professionally sharpened once; that was to thin the blade edge back to its original thickness. It wasn't a cheep knife back then it cost approx $75.00; now I see them advertised for better than a buck 50+. I have other knives but always end up going back to my Old Timer. One last thing that has likely helped this knife last so long, it was from the recommendation from Lew here on the board. I asked if anyone here knew of a good sharpening system. That's where Lew suggested to check out the Lansky knife sharpening kit. It works great as long as you take the time to work the tool as instructed. Dan..
  8. Yes it seems like there's not many or is it just the idiots that stick out in our minds? What about the bass, walleye, and musky boats that are bosting 300+ hp motors. That blast off from the dock (not talking tournament) to get to their fishing fields; is that OK? I cannot count the number of times out on Long Point Bay; that I've been drift fishing in my 16 foot tiller. Only to see a fully decked out (downriggers, plainer board mast, ect.) boat hurdling towards me and zooms by at 3-4 hundred yards away from me? Lets not even go there that on plain there's less wake. When the wake takes me from drifting to bottom bouncing that's a bit much. Is that OK cause they have a fishing rod in their hand? All I'm saying is that there are all kinds of idiots (me included) out there, regardless. Hey Billy Bob I just put an different engine in my car. Want ta go for a rip and see what she'll do. Yea that was me, loved street racing; that's until my first child was born. Dan...
  9. Hey capt. Don't let these guys knock you down looking for advice. You're doing your due diligence in trying to help out the family. Yeah there's a lot of ass holes riding jetskis but there also a lot of responsible people out there just having fun. These same people know how to respect the people around them and keep their distance while they're playing. The one's that don't are the same entitled buttheads that walk amongst us! Dan..
  10. Ok here people; the guy's original question was what do I need to make what I have work for a day of fishing. Some here ae trying to outfit him for a tournament. LOL Doing what you asked is very simple. Get yourself a couple of group 24 or 27 deep cycle batteries. Maybe one that is classed as a start/deep cycle (Battery Bull? I don't know). Hook both batteries to a combination switch. This will allow you to separate the batteries from each other or connect them together, if you run the starting motor low with your electronics (fish/depth or whatever finder) low. you'll have the trolling motor battery in reserve or vice a versa?
  11. Sorry man I have no experience one that lake? Wish all the best and let us know how you did figuring out the lake? I'll look forward to your report. If you could add your report to this thread, I'll get a notification that you had. Thanks!!! Dan...
  12. Sorry here but I have to laugh. A serous question (which I cannot help with) which then turns into a cougar funny? Yeah this cougar needs to be put down for the sake of all other cougars that still have some self respect. Anyone really have an idea of what the tracks were made from? Dan...
  13. With all the great suggestions; the last I'm going to say on this matter is hang the frigging motor on the boat as is and go fishing!!!! Will It work 100% not likely but it'll get you on the water so you can enjoy yourself. Screw all the theory and just go fishing... Work out the bugs as you go! Dan...
  14. Cut out a carboard templet and most any metal shop can cut something like this. Whether stainless or aluminum. Again as Glen said one plate on either side and get some hardwood cut (out of one piece) to fill the void. Glue and bolt together; no issues. Dan...
  15. The above would be the best fix for this. IMHO Fill in the transom where it dips down just as Glen said. Had a friend do this, as he was given an all but new long shaft for free. Didn't take much time to decide to build up the transom and it worked great. He fished that boat for years. He built the transom up so that the cavitation plate of the motor was level (well maybe just below?) the keel of the boat. Dan..
  16. Drill a small hole at each end of the crack, that should stop that crack from continuing. If the crack has spiderwebbed, you may need to cut out and patch in a new piece. Dan...
  17. It could also double as a heater for the camp???? LOL Sorry I had too!!! Dan...
  18. The only thing I can think of is this "needle"/Tee valve installed between the regulator and the units burner(s)? There's no reason that I can see why it wouldn't work to reduce gas flow to the burner? Cheaper then buying an adjustable regulator. Good idea!!! Dan...
  19. Yeah I didn't like my propane smoker either at first. Its a dual burner Dyna-Glo. Liked everything about (roomy, good racking) it; but it was just to hot for my style of smoking. Even with only one burner turned on, to its lowest setting and all the vents open; I could not get the temp below 225-250 degrees. I was roasting the meats, not smoking them low and slow. I was about ready to give up on the thing; but I paid to much for it to just sit there. Then I looked at my camp cooker and its temp control was was on the regulator. So I took that adjustable regulator and put it on the smoker. I set both of the smoker's burner control knobs to high and then adjust the amount of heat I wanted with the regulator. It also now works great for prepping the smoker; as in getting the chips smoking by cranking up the heat until it gets a good roll of smoke going. Turn the reg down and by the time I get the smoker loaded with whatever I'm smoking; its at about the right temp. Make a few adjustment with either the reg or the smoker's control knobs and I now can control the heat to wherever temp I want. Dan...
  20. Looking at the pic it looks like you already have a 5 stud hub? Why do you want to change the axle? An axle doesn't change the carrying capacity of the tire. If it is because you want more room for a larger tire. You could relocate the axle or add blocks between the axle and springs. As in if the axle is sitting on top of the spring flip it to the underside of the spring. If after flipping the axle and you still want more room add blocks between the axle and spring. With your estimated weights you gave us a D rated (2150lbs @ 65psi @ 65mph)) should be enough but it's getting to the top of it's range. Then add in your gear, supplies, and then mix in a bit of road speed could have add up to the blow outs? An E rated (3520lbs @ 80psi @ 65mph) should do the job with no problems. I'm just looking at the cost of buying an new axle if it is not warranted. Dan...
  21. What's wrong with the axle? If the axle and springs are carrying the weight ok; why not move the fenders, allowing to put whatever size wheel and tire on? If the hubs on the trailer are four bolt, you may need to replace them with 5 bolt by 4.5" pattern hubs, opening you up to most any 14, 15 or even 16 inch wheels. You didn't say so I am assuming that you have glorified golf cart wheel on the trailer now? Dan...
  22. Just an experiment. When done for the day, disconnect the fuel line at the motor and let the motor/carb run out of gas. The next day plug fuel line back, pump the bulb until it has fill the carb's bowl, then try your normal stating routine. If it starts and runs better; it's likely that the small amount of fuel in the carb has gone stale (yes even over night) and lost its volatility. The fuel in the carb is exposed to the atmosphere; alcohol fuel loves to give up its essentials to burn and absorbs moisture. The fuel in the tank and hoses at not exposed to the air or shouldn't be with a good self venting cap and or you closing the vent at the end of the day. Just for worst and giggles give it a try? Dan...
  23. I agree 100% with the thermacell underlay, keeps you warm and dry while laying down. I'd still like a cot, I'll be off the ground (incase of a tent rain flood) or accidentally picking the ONLY lump/rock or whatever under the sleeping bag, that jabs you not matter how you move. A thermacell will still work on top of a cot; it'll keep the dew off the underside of your sleeping bag. Speaking of lumps under a tent; we set up a new tent in out backyard, just to see how it went up. The kids and I were going to sleep in it that night. While Cathy (my wife) was laying out the sleeping bags, she finds this lump under the tent's floor about the size of a small pinecone. So I'm asked (told) to go under the tent and remove it. So I did and when I came out from under, I found myself holding a petrified piece of dog crap!!! LOL Dan..
  24. What we've been using at the trailer is an oil burning lantern filled with a citronella based oil. It gives off a decent amount of light and it does help with the bugs. What I've been doing is to light the lantern (outside) about a half-hour before we go to sit out on the deck. Leaving the wick set a little high to produce some extra smoke. Once outside I turn the wick down to get a nice flame. I agree that the green coils work well; but my wife can't stand the smell of? Dan...
  25. You might want to check with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) before you transport the firewood form your area to another. emerald ash borer CFIA suggests that you buy your firewood local to where you're camping and get a recite. A recite showing the seller's name, address, and contact info. I used to repair the CFIA's vehicles here in London and Brian Hamilton (Enforcement officer) said the fines depending on severity of the offence can reach into the ten's of thousands of dollars and or possible jail time. I understand the wood would only be for a couple of camp fires, but the CFIA is worried about what may crawl out of the wood waiting to be burned. They also work with the OPP and the MNR to help find offenders. Just a heads up. Dan...
