I have the red, blue and green connectors going from the Bell box to the TV as well as the HDMI flat connector cable. I imagine that's the reason I can't see a difference without the HDMI cable. So is the HDMI cable redundant then? 1080i and 1080P, I'm afraid to ask the difference, but will while I'm at it I may as well. Sorry if this thread is being hi jacked. I got sucked into paying 30 bucks for the gold connectors at Best Buy. They didn't have any "cheap" cables and if I paid an extra 25 bucks so be it, it costs that much in gas to get to Walmart and back plus all the fighting traffic and parking and door dings and line ups and people banging into me and, and....

I haven't been a fan since I was a kid trying to skate in the 60's. I am only one of a handful that can say I was a Leaf fan when they were a great team and celebrated a Stanley Cup win. Imagine a Stanley Cup win and Leafs in the same sentence.

I personally can't see or hear the difference with the HDMI cable connected. Is it supposed to make a big difference because I don't see it? We are on Bell satellite and get 1080P. Big difference between the SD and HD channels.

Ram 1500 Diesel - Mileage Post (NF)
Old Ironmaker replied to hutch4113's topic in General Discussion
We get so hung up on numbers when we speak of fuel consumption. I actually heard a talking head on a Motoring 2015 episode today say that the difference between 7.5 L /100K and 7.1L/100K is substantial, really?? 0.4 liters per 100K or 400ml of gas per 62 miles. They better go out and buy a new boat with the savings. Fuel consumption is important but I'm not getting hung up on it. When I want my V8 and it's 300 HP merging onto the 403 while towing a ton of boat I want it and I want it now and I don't care what it costs if I can avoid a collision with a wanna be SUV with a 6 cylinder diesel or gas sewing machine. I'll pay the extra penny or so a mile for my V8. Wow 1 zip Canada, 23 seconds in. -
Last month a fellow member posted some pics of him on ice with open water mere feet from him. I said I thought the edge of the ice looked like a few inches not 5 or whatever he said and he blasted me for what reason I do not know. I still think that anyone fishing on ice near open water is nuts. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. All waters are not the same. I know it can be touch and go on a river because of currents and here on Erie where water levels change I have bored a hole and found the water 4" below the ice. That's not good either I think.

When we ice fished as often as possible we always had spikes in each pocket or fastened to a long piece of twine wrapped through to each arm of your coat. Like Moms puts on kids so they won't loose their mittens. A buddy went through in the spring on Quinte and he held onto the edge of the ice with a spike until he could be pulled out.

Very nice stuff there. Dave Mercer sure has lost quite a bit of weight. I haven't seen one of his shows for years. Any credence to the rumor his sponsorship from Subway was in jeopardy because of his weight? Regardless he's as trim as a noodle rod now and good for him. Someone said " Hey I hear Dave Mercer lost 100 pounds" other guy replies " Yea that's like throwing a deck chair off the Queen Mary to lighten the load ". You have some great skills on that camera and a great eye. Keep up the good work.

I might need to dig out my long Johns this year and hit Nipissing this year. Glad you made it home safe and sound. I hate that drive after fishing all day, well worth the night at a motel and hit the road bright eyed and bushy tailed in the AM.

Hiring a guide, not all like Mike
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
No Manitou that was a different charter. I guess it's true you get what you pay for. That charter worked out to 20 bucks each for the 3 of us. -
Now that I have hit that age where wisdom should kick in I find some my age think they know it all and don't have any common sense. The " I've been doing this for 50 years and nothing has gone wrong " attitude. Like a pal that lost 3 fingers on his dominant hand because he didn't need no stinkin guard on his table saw. I feel for the friends and family left to deal with tragedy.

Hiring a guide, not all like Mike

It is scary when the captain of a broken down scow of a boat off the coast off the California Baja asks if anyone has a cell phone or a compass? -
That may be Dawn Wells' head but that's not her torso. She was born in 1938. No boat show for me. I am barring myself from it. I went 6 years ago to help me decide new or used. Once I saw what little can be purchased for 20K the decision to go used was easy for me. I didn't wait until fall because I found a lucky good deal in May on a trade in.

Hopefully as tempertures drop and winds blow colder more real fishing reports will start coming in and I can then live vicariously through others exploits and this winternet thing will die down. But until then............. I really enjoyed reading Mike Borgers latest submission and enjoyed it as usual. I had the pleasure of Dan Columbys company and his Musky expertise on the West Arm of Nipissing this past September and because of Danny I knocked down my fish species bucket list by 1. And Danny has to be amongst the top of the list of the 20 or so charters and guides I have experienced over the years. As I was reading Mikes fantastic trip report he alluded to the fact that his guests couldn't have been 2 better guys as they had much in common and got along very well. I wondered what if a guide meets a customer or a few customers for a day, or worse for a weekend, and they just dont get along. I guess it is a skill a guide must have and that is very tolerant and able to get along with everyone. I know I will never be guiding anyone in this lifetime. But there are jerk bait guys that show up for a charter half or all in the bag after pulling an all nighter puking all over a guys boat and tackle. I have one story that goes exactly like that. No not me, it was one of the guys that split the charter with us and we had never met him. I knew the charter guy fairly well and knew he wanted to strangle him. I could not take it anymore as he was being an a hole on my dime and either the Capt. dropped him off on shore or I was going to drop his almost sober pal and him offshore. Then there was the charter for Walleye we booked out of Port. Colbourne. The guide had 2 more helpers onboard plus the 3 of us and and only 4 places to sit in a cramped Bayliner Trojan. I nearly threw them overboard too when it became obvious they were pre fishing a tourney and making 75 year old Ozzie stand while they sat in our seats, not for long after I noticed it. Helper number 2 would pull the rod and forget to hand it off to a paying customer. We paid what we agreed to even though we could have disputed it. I gave him a tip, get some overtime shifts at GM to pay for his gas. I went around the plant and posted our experience in all the canteens, at the Union Hall and a few lunchrooms. I think the plant fishing club talked about them too at a meeting. We had over 12,000 guys working back then. He did not get any charters from anyone in that plant I guarantee you that and never heard about him again. Have a horror guide or charter story please share until some good reports come in from this weekend. JD.

Is it not wonderful to have our own personal outdoors writer, photographer and professional fisherman here for all of the OFC members to enjoy? Mere mortals need to wait and pay for the magazines in order to read and see his photos. Saying I love your stuff Mike is redundant again. From what you wrote to 206 he or she will never, ever get onto a plane now. Quote feature NFG again. If anyone can help me (again) I pushed some key that will give me ÈÈèè when the blue E key is pressed as well as ÇÀÀ instead of the front slash symbol. I canèt remember the fix, again.éé

Darrell, not only did I think G. Loomis was Canadian and from Mount Hope to be specific, I was convinced by a few co workers he was the G. Loomis we worked with, those rascals. They had a good laugh and I'm in the "what do I know boat" too.

The same thing happened in the Golf club building world about 15 years ago. If there is any comparison between the 2 industries I wouldn't know. A small business making custom clubs could not get off the ground because the big guys said to the suppliers of good quality shafts "thou shalt sell to us and only us". So the quality components were not available to the little guy. Similar to retailers shelf space. I can develop and market the best shampoo ever seen by mankind for less lets say. Proctor and Gamble tells the retailers if you stock that new product we will pull all of our products from the shelves in your stores and only sell to your competitors. Like Kevin O'Leary says they will squash you like a cockroach. Until the people that developed the quality in the first place fulfill their non competition clause and go back manufacturing quality products may the little guy be able to purchase from them again, maybe.

Usually for the last few years it's a struggle just to stay awake past mid night. We used to do the Dinner Dance thing but I say if I want to celebrate with a few hundred strangers and pay to do it I'll just invite my family over. My wife volunteered to work and close the store so she got home at 10:30 and I fed her Brodetto on Polenta. We were invited to come by the neighbors from Toronto as we are every year, we are the old folks here now. To my surprise she said lets visit the neighbors. We had a blast with the 30 something DINKS. We stayed to 3 AM. The best part was the 3 minute walk home, no waiting for a cab and no designated driver. Happy New Years to all.

A great choice. I hope you don't have a glare issue. Ours does but it is 7 years old and those plasmas back then they recommended a dark environment. I don't know if it applies today. Shloim mentioned his father was a TV Repairman, another profession gone the way of the Dodo bird. Just like the "Milkman" the "Honeyman" in he city and the soon to be outdated "Mailman".

You hit that nail dead on Bill. By the time I'm entering any place I'm leaving my green all I need to know from the sales person is, well actually nothing. It can be frightening eaves dropping in on sales persons pitches when he or she is does not have a clue what they are talking about giving a dog and pony show. It can be disturbing. I have been known to take the buyer to the side and give them my opinion. The thing is I am thanked more times than I'm told to bugger off. Actually have never been told to take a hike. I may not know the difference between 1080P and 4K but do know the difference between thin set and mastic.

Woke this morning to over 6 feet of ice at least 100 feet out from shore. The 70KPH winds kicked up 5 foot breakers that are hammering the shoreline creating huge ice walls as I type this actually. So I really am not lying, the ice is 6 feet deep or more. Long Point Bay will have a good covering if the wind and cold keeps up. As long as we don't see the 9C temps they are calling for Sunday here Fish Farmer will be a happy boy soon.
