If you heat by wood, this may be of interest
Old Ironmaker replied to Ralph Field's topic in General Discussion
Wood burning in the future in the city and elsewhere actually will be more and more difficult I believe. It is getting more difficult to get fire insurance on homes with certified woodburning units. Some providers just will not insure any places with wood burning appliances. This came to light 12 years ago when I helped on a new build in town and plans were to build a gorgeous fireplace with an insert, no broker could find an insurer to cover a new build. Most of the guys I know that have woodburners in their shops are not insured for fire. That makes burning wood very expensive if a fire did happen. I have seen some that are a fire hazard waiting to burn the building down around it. Guy gets a new stove old stove goes into the shop. I think we have seen or done it perhaps. I personally think it is a problem in areas of high density. Even out here at the lake. We had a nut bar neighbour once that would burn anything that grew out of the ground. He liked spruce and pine best. My wife has asyma(sic) when black smoke was billowing out his chimney and the wind was blowing from the west it really bothered her and that's only from 1 residence a few hundred feet away. Imagine an entire neighbourhood in the city burning wood. The neighbour moved. Long story, happy ending, for the neighbourhood. This guy gets a entire chapter in my book. OK I have to tell you one. He moves in and I remind him to take his stairs up before he heads south, I'll help. Nope not required he tells me, he's an engineer and nothing will move those stairs based on his research of wind and water levels here, Erie. OK. Of course the first October Gale the stairs go for a swim. They end up on my breakwall 30 feet from shore and 20 feet up the hill.. There's a knock on the door and 2 OPP are standing on my deck. He insists I stole his 15foot section of stairs because they are smashed to smithereens on my property. The cops let me off with a warning. -
I think it would be legal here Brian, nothing more than a tip up really.

When I saw that Brian posted the pic of the 2 beauties I was wondering where that ice could be. I have die hard hard water guys I know that are seriously Jonsin due to the lack of fishable waters here. Then I see it is up there where the Sun don't shine much this time of year. Nice catch there Johnny boy, nice catch on 2 fronts actually.

29MPH, crazy fast? Oh Worndunker, man you are showing your age. Kelvin, get 2 footitis and get something you can come out here and get out 10 miles and hammer those horse size Walleye on Erie. My 19 foot StarCraft can get into back bays on any lake and river and is comfortable enough that we can get out on the big lakes when I pick my days and feel safe enough to get back in from 10 miles out if the weather turns. I can stretch my legs, when there is 2 of us and I leave a few seats home I can put on a good tune and dance in the thing. There have been days I wish I had a 25 foot glass boat out on Erie but I am less adventurous now and watch the weather like a hawk. Go bigger or go home. Good luck on your shopping, I come across many boats in my travels and will keep my eye open for you.

Saturday Perchen out of Tim Hale's Huts
Old Ironmaker replied to oldphart's topic in General Discussion
70 keepers is nothing to poohoo at Sinker. Thick ice, a warm hut and keepers, that I can handle. Walking out on iffy ice and sitting on a bucket with wind whipping up my arse, nope. I'll leave that to you nut bar die hards. You know who you are Dave and Brian. -
Rudy, Rocky, Scotty. The underdogs that persevere and win in the end. I think I'll start writing the screen play.
-
That would be too logical Rick. Guys want R-2000 huts.
-
More than once the fish would not touch the live bait but would hammer hardware or plastic. What do you mean a liability, try some live bait!

A CO detector will only give you readings on post combustion emissions. If there is a propane leak it won't alarm. Just because a detector alarms doesn't mean you are in immediate danger. Most are set to alarm at 50PPM, parts per million. The MOL says a worker can safely work in 50PPM for 4 hours. 400PPM for periods of 15 minutes. 50 PPM and I'm out of there. The problem with CO alarms are the people that ignore them because an alarm may sound at only 50 PPM and seconds latter the atmosphere can skyrocket to deadly levels. The most hazardous conditions in a hut are the huts that burn wood and are air tight, then you are looking at an oxygen deficiency in that hut, even though the flame may die at less than 17% oxygen it may be too late. Any heater should be vented to the outside. These Buddy Heaters and cook stoves in a tight insulated hut are very dangerous. The evil thing about CO exposure is once you might realize Highly unlikely)that you are being gassed it may be too late because no matter how hard you try the muscles and brain stop working and you can't walk. Learn the signs of CO poisoning. Go to the Ont. Occupational H&S act for Mines and Mining plants to get the best skinny on exposure levels for CO. I've been gassed, not a good experience.

I have to admit El Wormo you have some good skills, nice rig you have there. I don't know about the paint, that would be my dept. You can now go into semi retirement. "Build them and they will buy." You build them and I will airbrush them. 70 for me, 20 for you, we need to slide 10% to M2B2 because he knows how to post a pic.

I missed that, broke it what the hell. How? I would be sick to my stomach. Once you calm down access the situation and write down everything you did while it's fresh in your head. Then call the dealer tomorrow once you have cooled your jets.

Good idea to get one of those beauties where you are, after you buy a home. If I lived where you are Simon I'd have more than one or a side by side. The problem around here is too many citiots from Toronto coming out here calling 5/0 complaining about the noise and the OPP comply. Those fish in the back lakes and streams are now endangered. I bet the first aftermarket add on will be a top so you can have fun plowing in a blizzard. The young fellow that plows our 1KM common laneway here has a snowblower on one machine and a plow on his second. I love helping him do the laneway on the plow but it's not fun if the wind is blowing on shore at 50KPH or more. Have fun.

I have a pal in Waterford if I get a hold of him I'll PM you. Waterford isn't far from me.

A hut eh, hear that Wormdunker he fishes like a normal human, in comfort (inside jab). I would love to take you up on the offer sometime down the road as I'm off to physio in an hour to get my back in line so this week isn't doable. Where is Shades Mill Tender52? Thanks for the kind gesture, someone I'm sure will join you for sure. Johnny D

Good old Abe was an old man when I was a young man. No one could have played Tessio but Abe Vigoda. Tessio bends over to whisper into Michaels ear "Hey Mikey, Barzini want's a sit down, on my turf, don't worry I'll take care of security." Tom Hagen to Michael after Tessio leaves " I always thought it would have been Clemenza." Michael Corleone "No it's the smart move, Tessio was always the smart one" Last act Godfather 1. He will forever be Salvatore Tessio to me. Reposo en Pace Abe

river ice fishing safety, close call

Going into water over your plums at 0C is more than your average shrinkage. If you cough you might get a mouth full of nuts. -

We have that 1 window on the lake side 14 feet up, I use a leaf blower to clean it. Pants come off as easy as they went on! -

Effects of Ice and Next Soft Water Season
Old Ironmaker replied to netminder's topic in General Discussion
That isn't a M2B2 response. You are a lot like me, if you see something you don't understand you will hold onto it like a dog with a bone until you do know how it works. Maybe a difficult question but impossible, no. We have to know why because we have a duty to the grandchildren of the baby you are about to have. We (maybe not your generation but I for sure) have made a cluster fudge of this planet and it's up to us to fix it. edit: when I think of some of the things we did to the environment up until the mid 80's I cringe, don't know if there is a statute of limitations for environmental charges. -
Send me a PM and we can toss around ideas.

When ever someone in a meeting suggested a new project that person was usually told they are the co-ordinator. Great idea Freshtrax you will be a great coordinator, how can M2B2 help? Seriously though it won't be that tough a task. There will be a few hurdles as in many folks here work weekends so having it on a specific weekend may mean a few can't participate. Also some may not want to put in 20 bucks which doesn't mean others can't, those that aren't in a side bet just win bragging rights. It won't be a difficult task. I am willing to help Rick and yourself.

Watched episode 4, love it. I guess there is more to come. Who do you think will take it. My money is on team Shimano. I don't know if it's fair though since they can use 2 rods each on Ontario and get to cross the border and fish the US waters for Bass. I wonder why they aren't called Team Ontario? It was hilarious when Taro wouldn't touch the Bullhead, a pro guide that is afraid to handle a fish, that's funny.
-
You beat me to it Freshtrax, that would be fun. All you would need is a camera and a tapemeasure. Don't even need a boat.

I just came up for air after watching the first 3 episodes. I have to say it has to be the best fishing show I have seen in very long time that I can say I really like. No 100K boats, there isn't a bank of electronic screens, ipilots, Power Poles and gadjets they flog on other shows and tell us we need them on our boats to catch fish. It really is refreshing to see all that STUFF isn't needed to catch fish. All 3 teams are entertaining and can be irritating too. My crew on the golf course and in the boat are always telling me to take a shut up pill, imagine if Taro and I were in the same boat (insert Taro laugh here). Paul Castellano knows that Niagara and mouth of that river like no one else and he isn't moving from it. They could jump in the truck and hit the Grand River in an hour and bound to get Bullhead, farm animals and monster Cats make a 5 minute run to Erie and catch monster Piks and 14" Perch, that is if he wanted or needed to. That Niagara is some fishery holding everything right here in our backyard for many of us. The guys in Sask and Manitoba had to put a few hundred K's on their trucks going lake to lake. Team Manitoba has shown everyone that thinks they need to buy 20 buck Live Target baits a few things. Most of their fish were caught on 99 cent Pickerel rigs, 2 at a time. Real fishing for the real common fishing people like us, except Mike Borger of course. I am going to watch what I believe is the finally now. It is nice to see the producers of this series doesn't fear the corporations that may be possible sponsors in the future, like Swiss Chalet and Mc Donalds. "You didn't ask me to supersize that!!! And I hate Swiss Chalet, they aren't even Swiss." I love it.

Apparently I am according to my Lady. I can never see where the milk or anything else is in the fridge. And when Mike B posted " nice wtg John" I read nice WIG John. When I said "compact washer" it was a sarcastic quip as to say it was a small washing machine thus making the fish look bigger than it actually is. Aw fegit id. Still a beauty fish.
