  1. It must be one of those compact washers. Nice haul, congrats. Did you put her on a scale?
  2. The spring thaw if snowfall was high that winter usually brings higher water here Joey. You are right about a slow thaw being better.
  3. Top down doors off, you can't get that feeling in any other car, well maybe a MGA but you don't see too many of them. Don't forget to crank the Supertramp. Don't forget to throw a pair of sweats and a jacket in the back, sun goes down pants go on.
  4. I love your little piece of Heaven there Chris Brock. You are going to have die hard hard water guys stealthily following you to your spot that has ice AND FISH. I have driven and owned Jeeps for a long time. YJ's, Wrangler, TJ's. Even though not mine but my pal even had an old post war Willys I helped destroy. The best advice I can give you to keep that Jeep running on the road, do not go off road, at least too much. Off road is fun but expensive. If there was something to break under the body I broke it. One day we were wondering what that noise was coming from below until I needed brakes, the noise was dragging a section of a brake caliper held only by the hydraulic hose, both fronts. All of the suspension components and hardware are nowhere the quality of the same components of years gone by. I hope you get the same enjoyment out of your Jeep as I did all 4 of mine. Get that top off, doors off and fold down the wind screen and you are as close to riding a bike down the road as you can. Do the windshields still fold down?
  5. It takes a Woman to say and do the logical thing, stay off the ice. I read throughout all these ice fishing threads "be careful". If you are out on thin ice and don't know how thin it actually is the next time you take a step or what is there the next time the ski crosses that ice what exactly can one do besides wearing a good survival suit to be "careful"?
  6. Lake Erie levels were at all time highs here after the last 2 winters. 2 years ago we didn't have a foot of beach. it averages about 20 feet. Hopefully lake levels drop to normal. As for the fish the smallie spawn was late in 14 and 15. They were still on the beds for the 2014 opener and water temps were very cold in 2014, it never hit 70F. Other than that the fishing was about the same as all years for Walleye here. Walleye action here is dependent on the previous 5 to 7 year spawn successes. The Perch fishing did drop off the last 2 years, winter related? I don't know but it sure was terrible last year.
  7. I think I'll stay off the ice until oh I don't know, about the rest of my life maybe. I'll actually probably will go out sometime if Long Point Bay ever freezes again. I love looking down the hole in clear water and watch the fish feed, or not feed. I really understand the passion some of you hard core hard water folks have but the reward is nowhere close to the risk early or late season. The same goes for going out on a big lake or any water fighting 5 foot plus waves to fish. I understand the need to do it I don't share that kind of passion for fishing and other things actually the older I get.
  8. 3 tickets in 1 day back in 78', 2 by the same female and yes she was very nice to the sences, then 1 ticket for speeding in the last 37 just last year. As soon as I saw him coming over the rise I looked at my speedometer and knew I had it and pulled over. 4 of us with clubs in the box. I slowed down and pulled over before he put on his cherries. Treat a cop with dignity and respect regardless of age and that seems to go a long way.
  9. I had a heavy foot way back when. 3 tickets in 1 day, 2 from the same patrol woman, same spot an hour apart. No way to meet a pretty blond. I get stopped by a constable in a speed trap. I ask the guy " what about the other 2 guys ahead of me going faster than me?" You fish he asks?, yep, " Do you catch em all?"
  10. Dan, unfortunately I can't see any of the pics. There is a square that says in bold black letters " IMAGE NOT AVAILABLE" with a X on a red octagon.
  11. It sure is nice to read about some fish being caught. Wormdunker and I were thinking about hitting Quinte. That is until I found out he runs and guns drilling holes and doesn't have a 2 man Clam. No way no how I am roughing it like we did 40 years ago. I want 5 star accommodations out there at my age. I'm impressed with both his fitness and passion, something I lost a few surgeries ago.
  12. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. "Mario Puzzo, Il Padrone". Hey the quote feature works for the first time in a few years, an update for Windows 10 the other day.
  13. Rick said "Spend money and get the best you can get. One quality suit should last a darn long time." In theory it should last a lifetime as long as I stop gaining this belly I found after the holidays. Like I said after watching that test of survival suits they are not all created equally.
  14. heres the answer direct from Microsoft: Windows 10 because 7 8 9. no joke 7 ate 9. My all time favorite geek haha is "there are 10 types of people" That old binary joke has me rolling on the floor everytime.
  15. Wormdunker, pi R squared. Grade 4 math. I used to know the exact formula to guestimate the weight of steel rod and bar. edit: Ooops I missed Floatnfly's post. That would be it.
  16. Good on you Brian. Wormdunker and I are in negotiations for a trip. It will be the second time out on the ice in 14 years, that is if he McGivers me a hut with a 3 piece bath by the time we go.
  17. http://www.wikihow.com/Survive-a-Fall-Through-Ice The above is a good set of rules if you have not had the experience of going through. I did once while walking the Bay of Quinte. Lucky for me it was in 6 feet of water. If it was any deeper I guarantee more panic would have set in and I would be a gonner. My pals thought it to be humorous for some reason.
  18. We used to tie 5" spikes on a string, run the string in your coat and the spikes went into your pocket. I have never seen ice picks. If you have a large enough inflatable PFD I guess you can wear it over your coat if you don't have a survival suit. For the avid ice guy I would say a survival suit is a must have, especially if fishing solo. I'm surprised the Gov. hasn't mandated certain safety equipment must be worn or available to go out on the ice. As well a minimum thickness of ice for walking or using a machine. We must have certain safety items for boating why not ice fishing? I know myself for the few times every few years I go out on the ice I would not invest in a survival suit. I saw a show on a fishing show where they were testing various survival suits, some were basically a coffin and the best was were the survivor lasted 20 minutes or so before the effects of hypothermia started to set in and that was because of water on the face thrashing about. All very good tips. And you are not stupid Rick, I was angry with you for not using you noggin.
  19. That is a neat thing to watch Simon, I really enjoyed it. Nothing like crystal clear water and seeing the fish do what fish do. Isn't it strange that if it was softwater season and going for pike guys need a medium heavy rod with 15 lb mono to bring in the same fish that you can bring up through the ice with a bendable strand of spaghetti. Thanks mate. There was a Rock n Rolla back in the 70's that lived in Hamilton for a spell that had the same deep voice(almost) with that British accent as do you. Long John Baldry. He played with all the big Rock N Rollas in the day including the Beatles, Elton John, The Stones and Dylan to name a few. Some pretty good company.
  20. A 1" bar is going to be seriously heavy. 3/4" is all you need. Any Mom and Pop welding shop will make you a bar and chisel together cheaply. I wouldn't expect to pay more than 50 bucks to weld a bar to a 3" by 5" chisel if you supply the material. To give you an idea for weight it's simple a cubic inch of steel weighs .920 pounds. on average.
  21. As soon as Windows 7 came out I was in the market for a new PC. A few weeks after W8 came out I couldn't find anything with Windows 7. I also was told by a guy on a techie talk show 85% of Apple systems are shared with all the others in both hardware and soft wear. True or false? The other question for all you techies out there is whatever happened to Windows 9? XP is the best MS system I have ever used.
  22. I just lost a fairly long reply. Readers digest version. I don't have a line up of people that want to be my friend so I can't afford to lose anymore Rick. Ice fishing alone? What are you stupid? Leave that wonderful young woman with a dozen little Ricks to raise on her own and I'm coming up there, dig you up and kill you all over again. JD I don't have auto save here anymore since new laptop Windows 10, any tips guys? Using Explorer, Windows 10, second version.
  23. Yes our economy is based on carbon consumption. But I can't get my head around paying ridiculous prices so my neighbour can stay employed. I sure am not feeling guilty filling up my 4X4 with that V8. I can say I'm not driving to the rez for a deal when I can get it down the road. I could save even more but I'm not unless I'm in the area.
  24. I finally got the quote feature to work, whoorah.
