Salmon Fishing Lake O- Newbie Questions
Old Ironmaker replied to James77's topic in General Discussion
The commercial guys have been netting Perch and Walleye. I don't begrudge any one making a legal honest living. If I had a mile long net I bet I would limit out. -
I put on 4 Cooper Discoveries on my 1/2 ton Silverado last winter. An aggressive all season that look like winters. I love them all seasons now. I know you have made a choice but for those looking a great tire for a 1/2 ton 4X4 and no need to change to summers I highly recommend them. Worked all winter and quiet in the summer. I see no significant change in summer or winter mileage compared with the factory supplied all seasons. I think they were Good Year that went 80K. Much, much better on ice and snow by far.

Salmon Fishing Lake O- Newbie Questions
Old Ironmaker replied to James77's topic in General Discussion
I'm pulling the boat from the slip in Erie which has become a hot bath and we are heading to Lake O. All of our Walleye set ups should give us a chance at finally catching some fish in Ont. I am reading here with great interest and hopefully get is on some fish in the next few weeks. Erie which usually fills our bellies of huge Walleye and limits of jumbo perch but has been a bust this year. I haven't even seen a Perch this year. 75 feet deep last month was 75F, crazy. The fish are there but 12 to 15 miles out, I will not venture to the International border in my small for here 19 footer deep V, no way. I hope you get on them and we hope we do as well. I call it the fishing summer that never was. Crazy year for sure. -
I read this earlier but didn't have time to respond. Tell me it ain't so. You know I tore my knee up a few times many moons or decades ago. First my right MCL, when you have enough trauma to tear any knee ligament it is a given you have chewed up the cartilages too. I had a crap repair on my MCL and meniscus cartilage. 2 years later I tore the ACL in a game in Montreal. I hate Montreal and have never been back. Your life isn't going to be the same, sorry just a reality, unless, and a big unless you are willing to put in the hard, long, excruciating pain full work. We call it homework. If you don't rehab it properly you will have a have a replacement in your late 40's. I don't want to scare you, maybe I do. Lose the weight now, work the upper body and when the surgeon says start your rehab you are in the zone at the gym. I pray you had a bad diagnosis. Get to Toronto if you can, Dr. Jackson if he's still there. Leaf and Argo guy.

Hammer time! That lake is on my bucket list. Way to go CPP member.

A 100 lb Surgeon can take an hour for sure. That must have been a blast. I have seen them but never caught one. Years back a 7.5 footer washed up on shore down the road. A beast. I took a pic and they put it and my report in the weekly rag we have out here. The local had it hanging on his back hoe. It weighed in over 100 lbs. I still have the pic I need to find it. All the kids in the area said there was a monster in the lake that summer swimming, they were right. See a PM from me. Kirsten must be up playing with Pops.

Oh, its that time of the year again!

You like pepper ckewly? I have never been able to have a garden here, pesky rabbits and wind that blows the flowers off the plants. I bought a tomato cage this year so I could move it around. Turns out they were a strain of cherry tomatoes. I picked all 14 of them and made a small salad, they were good. At the price I paid for the plant and the miracle grow and water it only worked out to a buck a tomato. I would have had more but every time I walked by I popped one in my yap. The only thing I miss from the city is my huge garden. I planted 64 tomato plants of several varieties of heirloom and my favorite Beefsteak. My basil was 3 feet high. Radicchio and sweet peppers. Romaine, a few fences of sweet peas, radishes the size of apples and sweet winter lettuce. Nothing like fresh veg from a garden. I would come home from night shift and graze. Then make a salad for TL's lunch eat it make another and sleep like a baby. That was before water meters, I would turn the water on at 6pm and shut it off at 7AM for the few night shifts a week. What a difference water makes, never knew what Miracle Grow was. I forgot the shallots, French garlic and scallions the size of cooking onions. The first year was best as that patch sat for 5 years under sod that grew over it. I busted that sod for 3 days to get to black loam. A few yards of sheep poo. -
Fantastic report and pics Sir. But I didn't know you could put a downrigger on a Toon. If anyone could figure how it would be the Toon Titan.

Great Bass Chris. I have found Large Mouth don't seem to be affected by warm water as other fish are. I've caught them in Cuba in bath water shallows. My not so favorite Bro-in-law stopped who started fishing 5 years ago and he can now have his own show, that guy. He was bragging how he caught a 42" Musky this year on a ultra light and played her out for well over 30 minutes and took 10 minutes to release it. He was so proud of himself. After listening to this Jim Saric wanna be I told him he should have run the boat up to it and cut the line when he knew it was a big Musky. Why? Because you killed it and explained why I thought so. You might as well shot it. Am I wrong? I'm not a Musky guy but know that much.

It's interesting that the cooking thread is less visited during the summer months. We eat a heck of a lot more in the winter. A few ripe tomatoes, a Vidalia onion, fresh basil, olive oil, oregano a can of good tuna and I'm good to go. Throw in a crusty Portuguese bun and ferget aboud id. Rick I wasn't going to say anything but you have gained a few chins there kiddo. Good you are going to do something about it. The older we get the harder to diet and exercise it away. The guys used to bug me when I gained weight. "Hey Johnny D. you have more chins than a Chinese phone book", actually a good one. If I had to cook for a dozen I would gain weight just taste testing those gorgeous meals you make them.

If your balls can touch the ground you should be making movies. If someone knows how to run fast the heels never touch the ground unless making a cut. The insteps should never touch the ground again unless making a turn then it's the outside, maybe. Look at runners spikes, hardly anything behind the balls of the feet.

Unfortunately it is talking forever to upload the video. I can count on both hands how many times I have puffed the stuff. But I did OD once at a cottage on Rice Lake in the late 70's on some primo Ganga right from Jamaica. I freaked out. My concern to all that would listen was how in God's name could a mailman find an address in NY City. Then I rolled the BBQ into the cottage and fired it up because I knew there were Bears outside that wanted the meat and I gave them all names. I cooked the pork chops for a minute on each side and ate 1 with the blood oozing out. It wasn't good and remember everything that night down to the panic attack before I slept for 12 hours. Everyone there still talks about it and their ribs hurt from laughing, oh yea real funny. Maybe that's why I don't smoke the stuff till today or eat raw pork. -
If you listen to Big Cliff you will do it right. I have done exactly the same thing on some previous repairs. That stuff ain't cheap but I have some repairs on boats where the guy must have got it for free.

I have to laugh when someone buys Sea Foam or some other "tune up in a bottle" and expects it will make an engine that has mechanical problems to run like new.

They sure present a hazard boating too. I was going out almost WOT and saw a line of them coming from the left about a mile out. Well I figured at my speed they would be clear by the time I got there at 30 some odd MPH. No way, that flock flying at just about head height had to be a mile long or more, how many is that, lots! I went to the left and slowed right down to let them pass. A cormorant in the yap at 30 MPH is going to leave a mark. I am all for an open season on them. I don't know what purpose they serve in Mother Natures business plan. Why are they a protected species? I don't get it, anyone have an answer? A story I read some time back. There's 2 guys on a water rocket Ranger. The guy thought it might be fun to run through a flock at WOT with his 300 horse. The helmets went on and he plowed through them. A broken wind shield, smashed gunnels, dent in the hull, scratches in the paint and a smashed face shield and strained neck latter the experiment didn't work out well. Stupid human tricks and Darwin Award winner. And he told the story!

Health issue, Sinusitis, any help please
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those that have taken the time and passed on their experiences and what has and hasn't worked for them to combat this sinus disease both here and in several PM's. I never realized how many people suffer from this thing. It was so bad yesterday when we were in Hamilton moving my parents to a new retirement place my wife took me to our local hospital emerg in Hagersville, great folks too. They couldn't do much but more than an Xray that showed they were plugged 90% and did insert a O2 line down my nose and I could actually breath as my throat was plugged up with infection too. A antihistamine just in case it was an allergy thing and flushed my sinuses with a saline solution. We stopped at Shoppers and got another saline wash kit, Medi Pot as suggested through a PM by a member here and the emerg. MD said that is a good product. I have an appointment booked for Monday AM with my GP in Hamilton. They gave me a calm down pill and I slept well from 8PM until 11 AM. I'm sorry if I can't remember all the names of those that have helped so far as I'm still out of it a bit from that wonder pill. Oh and a script for antibiotics, finally. I never realized so many go through this crap with sinus problems. My 85 year old Mom says it's from all the chemicals in the air. Can't argue with Mummy. Breathing all that crap in the plant didn't help I bet. Thanks again guys. It's funny if something was wrong with my truck or boat I would be on it immediately, my health and I put it off for over 11 years. Thanks again guys Johnny D -

Can anyone tell me why they leave a Bear dead overnight? Close to road kill, especially once critters get to it, no? -

I know you are only looking after and old guy and I appreciate it. You at work Rick? -
Shell's V Power= zero ethanol. We have to use a phase separator now because gas never had ethanol in the old days, just lead. We always used Sunoco because we pretended our 1.8 litre MGB's were British Ferrari's. A 2000 pound car that went over 100MPH felt like it too. With twin ANSA or Peko exhausts it just sounded like it. A little over 130 HP I think. I found a list of ethanol free gas in Ont Shell Pro V Canadian Tire 91 Costco 91 Ultramar 91

I still have a few hundred bucks of stuff you told me to take! I can't remember exactly what but my GP told me to throw it out, it would have adverse effects or render some meds useless. Please no disrespect I know you were helping. I'll see if I can find it. I'll feed it to her cat. I have a years supply of Testosterone gel, Expired in 14'. Is it really expired or is it like food, they want you to throw it out and buy more? I won't ingest anything I can't pronounce Rick. -

Not sleep apnea CPH, I was tested. When I do sleep I have full REM. Other things like knees, hips, shoulder, neuropathic and back pain wake me and dry mouth from being plugged up in the snozz but other than that I sleep great. I have been offered sleep meds and tried some that are supposed to be non addictive but they don't help. I've tried them all. I won't take narcos. I won't say he is a quack Dara because I used his name and his Lawyer is better than the one I can afford. But yes he isn't very good in my opinion. It's not his fault I have let this get out of control. I never considered a plugged sinuses were a big issue but it is now. I just received a PM from a member that has dealt with it and it was a symptom to a much more serious cause. Heart disease. I will be on the phone as soon as the office opens to see my Dr. I have been with the same GP since he got out of Medical school, 1980. He just retired and now see a guy that is 30, maybe. Need to give him a chance. I have something similar Frank, Nasa Mist. The saline solution comes pre loaded in an aerosol can. I have to be careful because just last night when I used it I could feel tremendous pressure in my ear as that was probably the path of least resistance my passages were so plugged. I blew my ear drum out a few years back from an infection from swimming in the lake and my ear is sore today a bit. If it's not under pressure I'll have my wife pick some up, she works at SDM., discounts I love, my allowance too! I am a mess eh? Thanks for all the help, I knew I would get it here. This ain't just no stinkin' fishin' forum we got here. Johnny D -

Well said Grimsby. Many died for our rights and too many take them for granted. I am from a generation that some had relatives even parents and grand parents die fighting for our rights. Mom lost a 18 year old brother in WW2 and a younger brother early in Viet Nam. Our Grand kids can't say the same so there in the personal nature of the sacrifices are lost. -
Smoker Craft Restoration..Need advice..

That boat is really coming along. To me all wiring looks like Spaghetti. I have found the 1 wire at a time works until someone spliced in a few different colours, then I'm done. We actually found some extension cord wiring spliced into the harness on a Bayliner in the shop last week. I can't imagine what some people are thinking. A fire on the water can't be fun. I leave electrics to electricians. The joke at the plant was when I called for an Electrician on the radio some smart ass would pipe in and ask if I needed my batteries changed in my flashlight. That I can do as long as I remember which end is positive. Skin Em Hydes (Don Hyde) Marine in Hagersville had a brand spanking new 16' 150 E tec in the showroom last month for less than 9 grand. It sure would look nice on my 19 foot StarCrafts transom. But my 1995 115 HP Mariner just hums. My kicker is louder I swear. You either love the style of the new E Tecs or hate them and the new fangled colours. I love them. A nice powder Blue or white E tec would look perty on mine. Even the Ferrari red would turn heads. That project is really coming along, keep it up, good work there. -
Not good. I use 2 plus 4. I have Seafoam but the writing on the bottle is so small I can't read the instructions. How much per litre do we use Fisherman?
