All very good points made here. My StarCraft is powered by a 115 Mariner which is a Yamaha/Merc hybrid. I have found that Merc mechanics are becoming more rare. Mercury has very specialized tools and not all dealers are willing to invest the bucks for them. There is no longer any Merc specific marine parts/repair place here in Haldimand and the closest dealer to me is almost an hour to Simcoe at Proctors Marine. Having a dealer to service locally is important. Buying a boat in cottage country may save some money but having to tow it up there for warranty service gets expensive if that's their policy.

Another reg. question catch vs. possesion limit
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I would love to know how a CO could tell what zone a fish came out of. They can't unless they do a DNA test, maybe. All someone needs to say is they are all from Erie, or Simcoe. -
My first choice is StarCraft, I have a 21 year old Superfisherman 190 and it is like new, Second would be Lund, The question is like what would you prefer, GM, Ford or Chrysler as well as all the European and imports for Asia? That's a lot of choices. If you ask a boat owner their opinion they will most likely say the boat brand they have is the best. I have been in most all of the brand boats mentioned here. Pal has a newer Prince Craft and he isn't too happy, small things like the glove box lock broke, carpet lifting in spots. In order to narrow your choices down determine your budget and look what you will get for the money. I would not buy new, slightly used will save you thousands. Whatever you do stay away from a Tracker boat, scrap.

Wow, I am surprised. Isn't that the very well known lodge that had a reality TV series on FNL some years back? They were supposed to be top notch. I bet someone got the boot.

Another reg. question catch vs. possesion limit
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
The Knecktel (sic) family own a number of restaurants in Dover, 4 at least. I have only had yellow perch there. The off tasting perch still had the skin on them and I would venture a guess that they were yellows, big yellows. They may have been white perch though, the scales are very similar. Good point, perch are perch for marketing purposes I imagine. Cheap too at 10 bucks a pound so who knows. Regardless there were no left overs. So to answer my question Simcoe and Erie are the only exceptions for possession limits to exceed daily limits I take it. -
How do you hook minnows for drop shot.
Old Ironmaker replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
We use a ball of colored wool on a snelled hook shank. cut off the hook, to fish for Alligator Gar in Florida. -
Check out Selkirk Provincial Park. Just down the road from us. Right on Erie with a nice shallow beach for swimming and Bass fishing wading out a bit. Close to Port Dover for a great day trip too. 90 minutes or less from KW. Any OFC member is invited to our place for a cold one.

Camping will give you many options. You can't swing a cat in southern Ontario and the near north without hitting a beautiful Provincial Park or county conservation area you can pitch a tent. The few times we camped and fished from shore of rented a boat for a few days was at "Lovesick Lake" camp grounds. We could walk across the road and fish Burleigh Falls from the rocks. We loved snorkeling below the falls, the walk across the rapids was an adventure. Some of the best shoreline fishing around back then. Smallies, Pike, Perch and Pickerel from the rocks on the Stoney Lake side. Rented tinnies from the camp there and fished the smallish Lovesick lake too. I know Lou would know if the campsite is still open. I was surprised to see how commercial it got in that stretch when I took a short ride there from a camp at Clear Lake 10 years ago. Now I hear those cottages are gone and a few McMansions were built where the cottages were. I just Wikigoogled Lovesick Lake campground, they are still there and have tent site, trailers and cottages for rent. Check it out.

Tragic news when a youngster is taken early in life. Regardless of who they were and what they did.

I understand I have a daily catch limit of 50 Perch here on Erie with my Sportsman's license. I can however have 2 daily catch limits of 100 perch per person in my residence. What other zones doe's the possession limit of a fish exceed the daily catch limit? 100 perch in my freezer is a number I would never have. Far too many for us because I don't like keeping anything frozen for more than 4 months, even that is too long for me. We can easily tell the difference between a frozen perch over 1 that is fresh. We have bought frozen perch and Walleye in the middle of the winter in Pt. Dover for a big scarf and there is a huge difference in taste. Like night and day. Both were frozen in water too.

Maybe you didn't get the memo GBayGiant. Before it does get locked I have to tell you something I saw last week. I was in the east end of Hamilton the other day. On my way to get to my appointment I walked past one of the dispensaries. I back tracked and walked in. It is nothing but a head shop, dirty, grungy, music blaring and the people that were in there would not be the folks on my Christmas card list. They were each and everyone stoned out of their gourds. Not 1 was over 30 and I don't have X-Ray vision so I couldn't tell what chronic pain they had. I know they weren't feeling much pain at all. I bet they thought I was a Cop. They all froze when I walked in. If these dispensaries are all the same they are a joke. More than one doper I know that grows their own and sells it drove several miles to get their script. Makes it easier doing business. De criminalize, yes, legalize, not yet.

I know that fish. Ugliarium Pescasorisrosum. Never served with the head still on it like a Trout.

A question about transporting game fish.
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
G. Mech, I am 99% positive that the regs state a portion of skin must be left on the fish if it has been cleaned in order to clearly I.D. the species. I need to check my PDF. I don't see how I can transport a limit of fish beyond what my license allows. Of course I can't catch 12 Walleye and bring them home saying 1 limit is for my wife at home. Or because it's my cooler I can travel with more than my possession limit when alone. I don't see how that's legal. But thinking about it I have done it coming home when the big cooler is in my boat and a second vehicle with zero catch is traveling behind me. I don't know the last time I actually kept a full limit of fish. -
A pal got sucked in when minutes after Indy won the Super Bowl he bought the T shirt and hat. Something like $19.99 and about 70 bucks in shipping and handling goof tax. They price things in US dollars because they can make more money. That crap comes straight from Asia to Canada. I don't even watch any commercials. I won't watch commercial TV if I can help it. AMC programs, 60 Minutes, national news or sports is about it. I just zone out for the time they are on and couldn't tell you what they were about seconds after. 15 minutes or more of commercials in a 1 hour TV program.

C'mon Sir Cranks, spreading hatred and bigotry. Please show me where? Plenty of forums and posts to quote to back up that statement. I have not seen that here at all. You can't make a statement like that without quantifying it. I would never be a member of a site that has members that do that. That is a very serious claim. Please show me.

I think that political threads and some of the urination contests that went on were like slowing down and gawking when there is a traffic accident. It is only human nature to want to see some of the carnage. Actually not much to see here. I will miss them here as I am always in for a good intelligent conversation and since I am outside the work force now those daily political meetings on the smokers porch or around the proverbial water cooler I am no longer privy to. There is plenty of political discussion at the coffee shop in town as long as it is about Wind Turbines and First Nations people. Red necks each and every one of them, not everyone but most, it's like a time warp going back to the 60's I swear. There have been some good, educational discussions because of the political threads from Global warning to legislation tabled I would have never known about if not for some threads here on OFC. I would have never learned about some important issues because of where I live and socialize. This site and the political threads has helped keep me in the loop. For those few or many that complained to management, I just don't get why they just didn't open the threads and move on. If anyone wants to watch car wrecks and urinary contests go to CBC or MSN news and read the racist, biased and derogatory comments from fellow Canadians, it is embarrassing to know these people exist. It makes the worse offenders here look like Saints. Plenty of political threads out there as Art pointed out to join, but none with my friends here on OFC. Owners of OFC, please reconsider your decision. Some of the best decisions I made in my life were those that I changed.

That is wonderful to hear Shloim. t doesn't sound like the youngins' got bored. No one gets bored when the fish are coming up the hole.

A question about transporting game fish.
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I don't buy a "Conservation" license because it is a few bucks less I used to buy one because I never kept a single Bass. Once I got into Erie Walleye and Perch, yes I was hunting for keepers. Nothing to do with cost or conservation. -
Thx admin...onward and upward.
Old Ironmaker replied to crappieperchhunter's topic in General Discussion
I don't share you opinion. I have made that known to administration. I will abide by the rules though. That's what we Canadians do. Just abide by the rules like the sheep that we are. Now on to all fishing reports, Nice fish, way to go man. what a beauty, I wish I caught that, nice catch, that's a keeper, must be nice. Where did you get them tires? I'm all out. -
A question about transporting game fish.
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
The original question was can the non licensed person given the fish be able to "transport the fish" from point A to point B and the answer is yes. If the fish are clearly id'd. The crazy thing I have learned is that a non licensed person can possess more fish than I can with my conservation licence. So my non licensed, non fisherman room mate/wife/son/daughter/renter/mother in law/ stranger on the couch can possess a full sportsman limit on their side of the fridge and I can only possess for my conservation limit on my side of the fridge. The same goes for anyone else that lives there. They can have more fish possession than I can and I'm the one paying for an Outdoors card and license. C'mon Man! -
You guys didn't talk politics did you? I just replied to a PM from Art. I want to thank him here as I did in the PM. It is obvious the owners don't do this to make money. I will abide by their wishes, it is their site and I respect their wishes whether I agree or not. Thank you OFC. I'm not going to ban myself like I did on another fishing forum a few months ago. All we have is our integrity and I won't let it get Stomped on for anyone.

Trudeau on Rice Lake Tomorrow Friday the 13th
Old Ironmaker replied to esoxansteel's topic in General Discussion
Based on the new rules shouldn't this thread be locked? I am on a few forums and along with the other topic headings such as Classifieds etc. there is a heading " Anything but ________" An option perhaps. If you don't wish to participate don't open the heading, too simple? Unlike some I enjoy the political threads here. Not because of the politics but there is an eclectic bunch of folks here and I enjoy reading other points of view from the opposite end of mine. Today was a very historic point in history. I dared not start a thread wishing those neighbours, friends and allies to the south my best wishes, it may have been deemed political or would become political. A few have made the Mods lock any thread of a political nature for the many that participate without making personal attacks on others and for those few like Weeds that don't like it. Typical of the greasy wheels getting the entire tube of grease. Not fair I say but fair doesn't often count these days. I am sure that more went on behind the scenes that members are not privy to. Be careful OFC management, many have left and less have joined. As was pointed out fishing post views are far less than the non fishing hits. I think it is hits that advertisers want that drive your business. My personal opinion only. -
I know more than a few people who's freezers are full of illegal fish and game. Most of them are in their 70's or older that saw some tough times growing up and find it tough on meager pensions . I'm not about to rat on them either. If they were selling it that might be different but \I still wouldn't rat. Years ago some of our neighbours would park on the side of the road and sell fish and game, they still do if you know where to go, that's wrong too because I know the MNR is aware of it.

Why does the Ministry insist there are no Cougars when the evidence is contrary? I as well was told I didn't see a Cougar or Lynx. I know what I didn't see.
-
I receive the newsletter from "MNR Watch", mnrwatch.com. It gives detailed accounts of charges laid for hunting and fishing offences as well as the outcomes of court cases. In all cases the penalties doled out are nowhere as severe as what I would like to see. A 3 year ban on fishing is ludicrous in this case, they should be banned from entering the country for 5 years. To Rick's point re: tourism dollars, not happening as the US dollar (T)rumps all. I strongly urge you all sign up for the newsletter. I was lead to it by a link Mr. T.J. Quesnal provided a few years ago here. There is however a Justice in the North Bay area and she isn't so kind to offenders. A larger % of the charges seem to come from the North Bay area for some reason. I was surprised to see also that there seems to be a large number of Hunting guide/camp owners that are charged for a number of reasons most often Moose hunt related. I have never read where those charged lose their vehicles or boats. Guns occasionally but not the bigger ticket items that would really hurt like a vehicle and boat.
