Trudeau on Rice Lake Tomorrow Friday the 13th
Old Ironmaker replied to esoxansteel's topic in General Discussion
I don't always agree with you Scuro but I do agree with some of the above. Yes many 2nd and 3rd World countries are doing nothing to curb C02 and other planet killing emissions. It's a live for today and the next generation will deal with tomorrow, emission controls or food, their choice, what would you choose? Riding a bike or driving a 4X4 with a V8, what do you choose? I drive the V8 and shouldn't but I do because I'm selfish. I also would rather fly than drive, that doesn't make me a bad person as are the people that work in those carbon positive countries, they aren't bad people. We as a nation that is supposed to be responsible can be stewards of our planet. I don't want to live where one must wear a dust mask getting to and from wherever you are going. I've been there and it's unsettling. You can cut the stank air with a knife in Tokyo and Osaka. Hamilton in the 60's and 70's smelt like the floral scent of Honolulu compared to those places in Japan. Should I sell the truck? I will if you do is the same mentality Globally about reducing C02. -
Simon, you are packing "some" tackle? There is more there than some bait shops out here. I see all good choices for sure. Have you ever considered Circle Hooks for those teethie salties. I swear by them, just don't set the hook, much easier said than done. Also I as well am the worst tying braid to flouro or mono. I tried using Micro chain swivels about 5 years ago and they work great. This would be on my heavier rods only though. I was concerned about wear on the ferrules but with the great ceramic and super material ferrules today there is zero wear. Wear on the braid from coming in contact with the chain on the reel is not an issue either. I had the lines tested for break at Angler Outfitters by Joslyn and the line broke near the chain swivel but the knot at the swivels or the swivels did not. Good luck and safe traveling there Simon, I'm jealous, again.

A once in in a lifetime fishing trip!
Old Ironmaker replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
I really miss Mikes reports, badly. If we don't watch it Bunker is going to be chased away as well. Then all we have to read about is Trump and Jr. and where to get the best deal on tires and batteries. They don't need us we need them. -
Trudeau on Rice Lake Tomorrow Friday the 13th

Rizzo, I would be very interested in the details of how BIL gets 30 grand in support payments from the Feds for a small business. Having been a small business owner that had to call Uncle in 2008 if I had a cash infusion of $30,000.00 a year in non repayable Federal support funding the 10 people that lost their jobs may still be working for us. That's only 3K per worker per year. It works out to $25.00 per worker per month for only 10 employees. Less with more than we had if our 5 year plan came to fruition with 20 workers, $12.50 each per month. It sure cost the Feds much more than 25 bucks a month per person collecting Employment Insurance and back then it was extended well beyond 26 weeks. I don't consider that neither a waste or a massive amount of $$$ rolling in. I call it a smart investment in our workers by Taxpayers. Netminder 60% employment cost for a any business no mater the size budget is far too high, even for a unionized shop. When I finished my Batch of Commerce degree at Brock after I retired they drove in the fact that 40% is the number that gets you to CCAA. 30% will keep you in the competitive ball park maybe. That 30% includes your own wages,,,,,perhaps someday. -
M2B2, you have said in the past you guide.
-
I have never met Huzz but would love to. I would like to get him out here this summer for some average Erie Pics, around 7 pounders. I think he might enjoy that.
-
But I bet you will take their $$$ M2B2.
-
Chris Brock, is one named Huzzaba? I actually don't mind helping our friend Huzz because he is just starting fishing later in life like I did and I got help from old timers at work mostly and bought every mag and watched everything fishing. But I get a bit warm when I spend time to give someone, not just Huzz, detailed info only to find they didn't go. Did they pass it on, never thought of that once before this thread. There is an example of sending a PM to someone and inadvertently putting out info one maybe should not. Huzz buddy, don't forget, loose lips sink ships.

Bruce I don't think it is accusations by divulging locations on purpose or by accident, it more like what just happens. Out here on Erie I can give you way points and you will get skunked at the same location an hour from now and may never mark a fish there for the rest of the year. You might not be in the general location as to where they are tomorrow. Small feeder creeks and streams for sure, they can't take pressure like a big lake. The only thing I get from these 30 minute infomercials they call fishing shows today is what truck or tire to buy or what kind of Seagar line Charlie is using today. But they can screw up big time. A few years ago Izumi filmed a show on a smallish feeder creek going into Erie. They even said the name of the town and I won't. They hammered a species of fish, big fish, and showed their presentation. I said to Ted I bet that spot will be packed tomorrow because it was the same time of year and to on TV now it was filmed last year. Sure enough latter in the week we find our way into town and drive to the spot you can see from the road. No less than 6 boats because that was what would fit. A dozen more where fishing close by. We went to the only slip in town and every truck had plate keepers and dealership tags from TO or farther. I emailed him about my displeasure and he emailed me back apologizing, he was wrong he admitted. There have always been an infinity for some anglers to learn others "honey holes". You can go back to the old "I will take you there but I need to blind fold you." My brothers former father-in-law actually told me the only way he would take me is if he blind folded me. I laughed, he didn't. This was 30 years ago. It was a hot spot. A small creek in the back woods where you could see the Smallies sitting there in fast water stacked up like cord wood. They hit anything you threw at them. It was a feeder creek on a smaller size river running into a Great Lake. I had to promise him on my mother and fathers lives and make it believable before we left home. His son who came with us was none to happy about it. The walk to the creek was covert. I have been known to embellish but I swear this is how you got there. He knew the guy in the Pro Shop at the golf course we needed to cross. The only way to get there other than to walk the river a few tough miles through the Mekong Delta. You slung a bag over your shoulder with clubs and rod and reel in it. Put a few hooks jigs, 1 or 2 floating Rappalas and split shot in a knap sack along with a canteen of water and headed to # ? Tee. Hid the bag in the grass and walked a 1/2 mile in. Only enough fish were kept for supper at the camp grounds. That's keeping a spot secret and I have only shown 1 other person in my life. I had to Marry her to keep the secret safe. That isn't true I had to send her to live in Guam. As far as honey holes. I have limited out when the boat parked not 12 feet from us was skunked on Klotz Lake. The same goes for trolling on The Bay of Quinte, our buddies boat trolling right next to us limited out when we never got a hit. Everything the same besides the 20 feet, same depth, same plug, line same everything except the guy holding the rods.

To quote a great man, " Are those Whitefish or? " want a hint doomazz, the title of the video is "WHITIES JAN 2017"

How thick, or should I say thin Terry. Last time out it was a bit over 2" the first day we went to BOQ. I sat in the truck listening to the radio and cooking. Something I wanted to mention Brian. At the beginning of the documentary you said there were about 200 of your "friends" on the ice. Are they like Farcebook friends? My former wife's page says she has 200 friends, yea right, she don't know 200 people. Ketch my pissan, we were posting at the same time. Kind of like a Sicilian, I can tell you but then I have to feed you. Going to the boot this summer pissano, thought I'd let you know. PM me about from where you guys are from, I knew but forget. It will be the 2 of us with no itinerary, off the beaten path, no Autosrada if we can help it. 3 weeks.
-
You did very well with the video. Spielberg doesn't have to worry about for a bit boy. Terry has more computer power at his disposal than the entire control room in Houston NASA did in the 60's, and I am probably 100% right. Any reason yer can't show da faces of da byes der? Are their photos hanging at Canada Customs crossings or the Post Office? Are those Whitefish or? Please post GPS co ordinates for those here lurking as spam bots.

Booking there where pan fish are plentiful is a great idea. Depending on how old they are keeping a kids attention for longer than it takes to get from one television commercial to the next is a daunting task. Getting skunked is the worst thing that can happen to a youngster fishing, and adults. I have seen kids stare into a bucket with a perch or even minnows swimming in it for hours at a time. Bring a bucket.

CO detector for ice huts/overnighters
Old Ironmaker replied to farsider's topic in General Discussion
Something to remember, a C0 detector does nothing when there is a gas leak. The best detector other than one specially made for NG and Propane is our noses. That is so sad and so preventable for less than a 100 bucks. We will spend that in a NY minute on tackle but not to prevent a death. -
Mr. Bunker, you could give GPS readings for some of the places you fish up north and I gaurentee not .01 of 1% of the lurkers will go there. Even for Southern On. you can say the Ottawa and then they have to pick a spot, good luck to them. I just say at the head of the fast water, go find some. For the Bay of Quinte we have limited out and our other boat 20 feet from us got skunked because of, location, presentation or population, or they just stink at fishing

Spincast, yep sure not as observant as I once was. I didn't even know that stat was available after 4000 posts. And I didn't know a visitor could actually be a spam bot whatever that type of robot is. I picture the Tin Man standing on a corner in a sandwich board.

Limits on pan fish and limiting out
Old Ironmaker replied to Acountdeleted's topic in General Discussion
No way I'm cleaning 100 Perch. Hers and mine. There are days you can spend an entire day and many dollars on bait because you are hauling them in 2 at a time and they are averaging 12". If you think it is a conservation issue go down to the marina in Dover and watch them use a shovel to get the perch off loaded. You will never feel guilty about keeping a limit again. -
CO detector for ice huts/overnighters
Old Ironmaker replied to farsider's topic in General Discussion
OK I hope I don't burn the Shepard's Pie. C0 is C0 yes. But during the combustion process heavier gases may be present in the waste gas along with C0 thus making "the waste gas" that includes the C0 heavier than air. So we have to be aware of that. If that stove is burning black that stuff coming out the chiney stack is heavier than air and it contains X % C0. Such as all manner of Iron Oxides waste gases of the Iron and Steelmaking process. Feo, some Fe0203, Fe0304. Blast Furnace gas has 65% C0 by volume in air. It is a gas other than our standard fuels waste gases we consider C0 to be in. However several countries overseas use these type of gases to heat their homes. We are off the rails here. I saved the Pie. edit: at one time early in the 20th Century the homes around the plants in Hamilton were heated with Blast Furnace and Coke Oven gas. We can learn a lesson from those thinking out of the box over 100 years ago. Energy like steam generated from plants today are used today for heating that I have seen personally in Japan, Russia, Australia and Finland. There are many others. Why don't we? No profit in it? -
CO detector for ice huts/overnighters
Old Ironmaker replied to farsider's topic in General Discussion
G. Mech, it all depends on what the carbon source is and the combustion process, but yes you and I both right. That's why 2 detectors is best in a confined space like a hut. A dirty burn the C0 will always be heavier than air, in a hi efficiency process waste gas is supposed to be clean, thus lighter than air. But a small heater isn't hi efficiency. -
CO detector for ice huts/overnighters
Old Ironmaker replied to farsider's topic in General Discussion
Remember that C0 is heavier than air. It is best to have your unit at or just above ground height. A second unit above the source of combustion is advisable as well. Each unit will alarm at different levels of C0 per parts per million. Our 3 units alarm at 50PPM. At 50PPM there is no need to panic. The Occupational H&S Act for Mines and Mining plants tells us that a worker can work without breathing apparatus for 4 hours with intermittent breaks to fresh air at 50 PPM. When an alarm sounds simply open the door until the alarm subsides. If it doesn't you have a problem, ventilate the area as much as possible and evacuate the space. If it continues do not enter the space and seek the aid of the Fire Dept. A bright blue flame indicates complete combustion, if there is a Orange or yellowish flame indicates the presence of hydrogen and lack of carbon. If the carbon isn't burnt in the process it finds it's way to the waste gas as Carbon Monoxide. I like the source of fuel outside the space in that way it can be shut off without entering the area. If we use a buddy heater the window is open or the door is too. It would be prudent to have a C0 detector in any confined space such as a nice tight ice hut. Even a clam if ventilation isn't good. Any combustion process emits C0 not just NG and propane. Any leak of a combustion gas is not only unsafe because it is combustible but it will displace oxygen in the air. When a person is exposed to enough PPM of C0 certain symptoms may be seen. Headache, nausea, slurred speech, loss of muscle control and mental awareness, eventually unconsciousness up to and including death. These facts I have given are from memory, please ensure that you read your instructions on the unit and do some research yourself from The On. Ministry of Labour website or call. I have read horror stories, had guys get gassed and I have experienced severe C0 poisoning myself, I nearly missed my 28th Bday. The victims were usually those that should have known better. -
What are you watching lately, TV, Movies..etc
Old Ironmaker replied to ckewley's topic in General Discussion
Yes Dave the Zanzibar is still going. I think we talked about this some time ago amongst us old timers. As far as the Old Vic where Long John Baldry did shows and "Tricky Ricky Days Extravaganza" of course I have never been to a dive like that. If I did go there I could still smell the carpet soaked in draught Beer and cigarette butts of both types, some still lit. The House of Lancaster is still going strong I hear. -
So depending on your outlook it can be harmless posting details or it can do great harm. I never thought about the PM scenario. We, well I at least would answer PM's for my Bass spots here on Erie, they can be hot, very hot and it is a massive body of water until one considers how small it can get along the shoreline. And I always presumed most don't eat Bass. Wrong. I'll not be answering PM's with specifics any longer. Want to catch and keep massive Carp, PM me, you can park in my driveway.

For a myriad of reasons I'm stuck here all day. Like not having my car keys. I slept zero last night so there won't be any power tools or changing the light switches I have to do. There are a few pay per views available and if anyone has seen any of these and can recommend them I thank you. I dislike paying 7 bucks plus goof tax to watch a flic that stinks. My choices I've narrowed it down to are these: Birth of a Nation The Account ant Peculiar Children Solace Before I Wake Any recommendations all? cewley, I sort of miss the seedy days of the city. Things changed when they built the Eaton Centre. I don't know if it was for the better. T.O. lost a lot of character Downtown after the clean up. -
Ice fishing from a boat is nice too. Be smart guys. Your Family and we all need you.
