  1. Those are some sweet sweet lakers. Those fillets are making my hungry.
  2. Thanks guys. I love fishing with my grandfather. Mom said that she sees more of him in me everyday which I take as a compliment. Everytime I get a chance to get out with him I realize how lucky I am. Joey, its the last pic. He had it cuddled and the thing kept shaking. Sadly, getting family out on the ice can be like pulling teeth at times.
  3. So, back on family day weekend I had planned on taking my parents, My grandfather, a few cousins, aunts and uncles out for ice fishing, we had it all preped and thanks to the family fishing weekend, no one had to get a fishing licence. Sadly mother nature would not have it and decided to throw -20 temperatures at us. My grandfather and I are that hardcore but did not want to subject the rest of the family to terrible coditions like that. So we replanned for this past Saturday. Sadly, with scheduling conflicts the only people that we able to make it were my parents and my grandfather. Friday night my grandfather comes over and we cook up the perch, lake trout and herring I had in the freezer. The perch and the lake trout were perfect, my grandfather had the herring first and didn't say anything, I tried a piece..... OH! Thats why no one frys it up. Man, was it ever fishy. So we head off to bed, next morning my grandfather and I wake up at 5 to go hit up Kemp bay for some Lake Trout, with the plan to meet my parents on cooks at noon. It was a chilly morning, we didn't mind too much but the holes were freezing over fairly quickly and the line kept getting caught on the ice. So I'm smacking a goby coloured Meegz off the bottom and feel my line get caught on the ice, pull up and realize that its not the ice. A good fight later and I was able to land a good eater Lake Trout. I got my grandfather to hold it for a photo. So a few more hours and nothing is biting so we head out to cooks. Timing works out well and we meet up with my parents at around noon. It was nice having company as we made the walk out to about 20 FOW to try and land some jumbo perch. My dad brought out a stove and cooked up some hot dogs and some hot chocolate as we tried to land some fish. The only thing was the fish would just not co-operate. We were out about 2 hours and could not mark a single fish. I had never seen it like that on cooks before. I mean, usually there are a lot of dinks but there are A LOT of dinks. We were seeing nothing. So my grandfather and I wander a bit and check some different depths. Finally I say 'I get the feeling the fish are holding up deep. We need to hit about 30 FOW.' We talked to my mom and dad, sadly my dads knees and back were being effected by the cold so they headed back home as my grandfather and I made the trek to deeper waters. As we got to our spot and drilled our holes the flasher lit up with the marks I know all to well on cooks. FINALLY! We were able to get into some perch but I have never seen them so finicky before. There would be a group of about 20 around my jig and I would have to finesse them into hitting. Thankfully a few took the bait, nothing big enough to keep but enough to make for a fun afternoon. Sadly I don't think my dad will be out again as the cold was a little too rough on him, but my mom and grandfather seemed excited to head out again. All in all I'd say it was mission accomplished. Grandfather going after the fish. Preping for the walk out on to cooks. Drilling holes for 4 people is tough work. Mom is plenty excited to be out on cooks. Now which lures will the perch like best today? The spoils of the morning.
  4. Oh man. What a sweet day on the ice. Thanks for the report. Love the pics.
  5. Let's try to get this back on track. I always say that if humans were the only species to eat meat, I would agree we are in the wrong. But many many species on this planet do it. I have heard the arguement that we need to be better because we have conscious of animals suffering. That is why it is important to not torture or further harm what you eat or kill. I feel as though eating and killing a few animals and fish will not bring this world to it's end, it's been happening for years. Spilling oil and dropping bombs is what will.
  6. In truest honesty though I think our fellow board members speak a lot of sense. My girlfriend refuses to eat anything factory farmed because of the poor living conditions but will gladly eat eithicly farmed animals or things that were hunted or fished. She feels they lived a happy life and 'we all have to die sometime' I can respect and support that. Adding on to what others have said, perhaps talk to your daughter about the spring bear hunt or areas where they are overrun with deer and allow hunting to help control the population. Those are always my best debates when I talk to vegetarians on the subject. Personally, when I die, I hope they throw me to the wolves or something like that. Nature has given so much to me, it's the least I can do in return rather then letting my 'meat' go to waste.
  7. Sounds like when I go fishing too. Often times 'I am a man of constant sorrow'
  8. I don't build stuff I leave that to brighter minds then I.
  9. Just heard some fish humor on the radio. Mccown: So I hear you have a pond in your backyard. Do you have fish in it? Brunt: we have it stocked with trout. But I can never seem to catch one. Only my son catches them. Mccowan: Why is that? Are you a Crappie fisherman?

  10. http://www.dairymoos.com/no-such-thing-as-a-vegan/ Show her this article. Problem solved.
  11. Which one is the international centre again? Sadly this means they probably won't have the minimal ice fishing gear they had in the past.
  12. The mistake is mine then. Sorry about that, I just thought I saw more criticism then constructive.
  13. This is what winter does to the best of us eh? I'm a little surprised guys. Dynamic_bear busts his but for 4 hours, writes up a report and out of 5 replies I haven't seen one positive comment. I know Dynamic_bear well and know the advice will be well recieved and will be put to good use, but if I did this report I'd be scared to post anything else. I know all you guys who responded from previous posts on the forums and from fishing reports and I know you guys are some of the nicest people out there. The responses just took me a little back. Personally I think it's a project well crafted and can't wait to see how it handles the ice.
  14. If they told me to ice it I would go ice fishing. Feel better soon.
  15. I loved it. The girlfriend pet sting rays and sharks. I never wanted to leave the fresh water section. They have paddle fish!!!
  16. Spring crappie is fun. Same with pike. They are pretty easy to catch too. If all else fails, go to perch fest in Orillia. More then enough jumbos for everyone with a hook and a worm.
  17. Dean Blundel is hosting the morning show on the fan 590. Time to switch to TSN 1050.

I loved the Dean Blundell show when Jason Barr was there. After he was gone, it went downhill quick.

He kept me entertained every morning on College.. headed for Mt Sinai.

  18. Perch dipped in almond milk, battered in herb and garlic fish crisp, fried up with a Spanish onion cut into strips. Served with home fries. Nothing better. For a bit of kick, switch the fish crisp with ground up sweet chilli heat Doritos.
  19. Dynamic_bear and I witnessed a tornado in his first year of tree plant. I remember it had been ultra dry weather for about a week and this day was exceptionally hot. We could hear the thunder off in the distance and I was getting excited. I kept thinking 'a dash of rain will be perfect to cool things off'. It was more then a dash of rain, trees were blowing over, logs were getting tossed around. We hid behind a slash pile under tubs to protect ourselves. Thankfully no one was hurt. After the storm, I'm walking along the path and Dynamic_bear is on the bus going the other way. He says 'Jer, are you quitting?' I respond 'I'm going to get more trees'
  20. It's rough when it takes a 4km hike to learn that the fish aren't biting.

  21. You need to meet my buddy Pete (not on the forums) you would get along great. He wants to do the 'meanest link' twice in a row by himself.
  22. I hope this does not come across as rude because it's not the intent. How are you still alive?!?! I have been very blessed to just have 'near misses' over the years. Kayaked to the Toroto islands, South winds picked up and I had to power paddle back up the Eastern gap to get back to Cherry beach. Made it but my arms were unbelievably sore. Was on a lake 30 km away from Lac Seul when it was hit by a Tornado..... Geez, was that really 7 years ago? We were on a long narrow finger lake about an hours boat ride from camp in a 12ft with a 9.9 and the waves were HUGE. We thought for sure we were going to have to spend the night on an island until the lodge owner came and rescued us. Had to take a 12 foot boat from Frenchmans bay to Duffins creek to install some temp loggers. On the ride back, waves are close to 3 feet. I ask the girl with me 'do you trust me' she says yes. We get back an hour later, safe but she looks like a ghost. All she has to say is 'let's never do that again'. My closest brush with death wasn't even fishing but rather tree planting. Middle of June in Hearst. Wake up to clear sky's and 5 degree temps so I throw on a few layers. Bus drops a small group of us off to finish a job. 30 minutes later, torrential downpour and my layers of cotton are soaked. I had to keep moving to keep warm and planted a ton of trees but by about 4pm I'm thinking if the bus doesn't get there soon, I may come close to hypothermia. Thankfully it wasn't long after that it did. I tried feeling bad for myself that day until I learned a girl on another crew did that same day in a t-shirt. Man, women are tough.
