no eyes, no pike. Right now, with unsafe ice on their usual spot, we're put onto a perch/herring spot so lots of fish are still being caught, some eyes around on the Aquaview, but not biting. Another week or so maybe and they'll be on the 'eye spot.

I live with a bunch of my friends, and in our "family" we own .... a 3 month old black lab named Buddy, a salamander, a bearded dragon, a corn snake, and a couple fish tanks with various species. -

We got up to Lake Nipissing at around 2:30pm on Friday afternoon, and were greeted by Carl and Randy of Grump and Grumpy's. They took us out to our bungalows in their "Magic Bus" and as we unpacked, the perch were already on our lines, not mine, but others in our group. The bungalows were clean, comfy and warm. This is my second time with this outfitter and I am extremely impressed so far. The afternoon on Day 1 was fairly slow, but blue sky days and day 2 of a cold front werent exactly the best fishing conditions. We ended up with a couple herring and a whole bunch of perch. By about 11:00pm, we were all a little bit tipsy, but steady enough to grab that bouncing tip-up, Dave landed a nice whitie and we cooked it up immediately. Dave with a nice whitie. I woke up at first light and dropped a line down, the fish were biting and I was pumped. Tyler, Derek and I landed a couple dozen herring and about 30 or 40 perch. Mostly on maggots, but some on minnows and small spoons. Today was much better than yesterday! Tyler with a nice perch. Me with our huts keepers for the day. We fished a bit on Sunday and landed some more herring and perch. Tyler lost a big whitie on Sat night, but nothing we could do. I highly recommend these guys and I suggest you give them a try, I'm headed back up in a month, and I will post again.

thats awesome man. three years ago i stayed in cuba and my dad and I took a cab to a lake called La Redonda. We paid a guide and did some bass fishing. We caught 20-30 average (1-2 pounds) largemouth and we caught a 6.5 and my dad lost a 9+ on a rattletrap. The treble hook broke off!!

good to hear, I'll have to try and get up for some herring soon.

Thats crazy I've seen some fish with some pretty messed up mouths, but I think that takes the cake !

skipping work for some hard water

I've caught both smallmouth and largemouth through the ice. Last year I got a 16 inch largemouth on the first weekend in March, got it on a live minnow while fishing for pike. The next day, while fishing for perch on Simcoe, in 39 fow, I hooked what I thought was a whitefish, but ended up being a 19.5 inch smallmouth. Got her on a 1/32 oz teardrop and maggots. -
the truth is out there.

The one thing about Scugog that BOGgles my mind, no pun intended, is how shallow you can catch hardwater eyes.

I found websites for both places, I also posted a few pictures from my experiences at each. For Mill Lake, I can't find my pictures from last year, put I'll post a couple from 04. 12 of us went up for a weekend and had a fun tournament, we could each weigh in 3 bass, 2 pike and one "oddball" each day. it was a blast. Aaron and Kyle won the tournament. I got this smallie from shore upon arrival to our campsite! For Ahmic Lake, I've been going on Canada Day weekend for the past 3 years, the fishing is unreal! big topwater smallmouth my girlfriend with another nice topwater fish. Another spot I may recommend is Mikisew Provincial Park on Eagle Lake, just north of South River. my girlfriend with another monster !! me with an avg. smallie from the lake!

I used to hate ice fishing, until I invested in a floater suit, now I feel safe and warm ! To me, ice fishing doesnt compare to open water bass fishing, but it does help me to get through the winter and at least into May when pike and walleye open. Even occasionally I'll find an open trib and drift for bows, but ice fishing is getting to be more enjoyable as I learn more about winter patterns.

A good drag setting is nice to have, but when I'm hooking big fish on light line (usually fishing for smallies on Simcoe), I will also disengage the antireverse, the drag still leaves pressure on the line, and you may still break off. But when I've got a 6 pound smallie on the other end of my line during a tournament, I want no chance of that fish breaking off. Flicking off the antireverse and "backreeling" when the fish wants to go, will eliminate that chance, and you will land a lot more big fish!
