  2. To add as a side note, it just occurred to me that this rod going out the door marks 50 years this month since I sold my first custom built rod. I think I'll retire to the porch with a cold beer. Cheers

  3. Hi all, got out for a morning fish before the nasty weather was due(never showed up in the end). Got a bunch of bass and walleye and was teased by a few musky. Fun morning.

  4. Seven trail cams untouched for 93 days, I guess I should say six trail cams, I couldn't find one as I was in territory I'd never been in before and my GPS quit working. Sucks as that is where I seen the wolverine last trip up. Anyway, here is a few of the 2000+ the cameras took. Not all dates and times are set correctly on some of these cameras.

  5. For those of you who were following my post "Moose Antler Rod Handle," it is now finally ready to catch some fishies. The owner wanted to give it the handle, "The MOOSE" and I was happy to make it so. Here's the final pictures I just took before it leaves the house later today. Oh and yes, the guides are indeed spiral wrapped, as requested. Thanks for looking and Happy Sunday Folks.

  7. As always very nice Spiel. Your pride in workman ship is unsurpassed. I love that you labeled it the MOOSE.

  8. Orillia has turned into a complete disaster, no more parking at fisherman's cove and most of the streets anywhere near that are either no parking or resident parking only. You can't park at Thudhope park across highway 12 with a trailer either. So, either go to one of the marina's or Go to Centenial park and pay $50 a day. Orillia can go fuddle duddle and I won't spend another dime there.

  11. Thank you CM. I've been building spiral wrapped rods since the early 80's. I have specialized ultralights for G'Bay Whites and Lakers, numerous down rigging rods in both length and line ratings (my fave go to is still a 12' spiral wrapped Fenglass from the 80's ) and absolutely spiral wrapped long rods for bait caster float rods. They're definitely numerous applications where spiral wrapped builds are the superior choice imo. The ole Fenglass awaiting action.....

  12. I'll add one more benefit of spiral wrap guides...it's pretty well a "must have" when using a baitcaster for floatfishing (eg.. for Steelhead). The reduced friction and minimal line contact with the rod blank make it easier to effectively trot a float...especially in sub-zero temps when icing becomes an issue. I also like the configuration for downrigging....I have an ancient pair of Fenwick "RiggerSticks" that came from the factory with the "twist"...still my favourites. Congrats on the 50 years, Spiel...I assume like a fine wine your work has only got better with age !

  13. It's all about the $$$. It's becoming like that all over the Province. Even in my quiet corner of eastern Ontario, the same thing is happening. Waterfront and recreational property values have gone through the roof, especially since Covid. When folks buy a $1 million + vacation or retirement property, they do so with the expectation of peace and quiet. That's why they leave the city to begin with. They don't like their lakes overrun with weekend warriors or their streets jammed with cars and trailers. The more "peaceful and private" a property is... the higher the value. The higher the value...the more $$$ the local municipality collects in property taxes. Unfortunately, visiting fisherman (especially day trippers) don't spend enough money locally to offset the gains in property tax revenue. I've sat through many meetings of the Central Frontenac township council...it's exactly what you hear. No one has a problem with attracting tourists to local lodges, cottage rentals, camps and marinas....but "day visitors" on the lakes cost the township more (maintaining ramps, roads, parking areas and collecting garbage) than the revenue they bring in..and of course, just like local residents everywhere there's a strong streak of NIMBYism..(Not In My BackYard).. The Province used to take care of public ramps, etc, but over the years the cost and responsibility has been downloaded to the local municipalities.
