To all my friends on the Ontario Fishing Community. As some of you know I hunt, so something I started with our family and friends in the early 80's as well as having turkey or ham is to have a roast of wild meat that I was fortunate enough to harvest. That to me is Giving Thanks. Have a super nice one guys with your family and friends.

+1 for finchasers I had the pleasure of fishing with one of his sons a few years back, and speaking from my times being guided fishing, I would rank my experience as #2 only behind the great Taro Murata. (tied with old board member fisherpete hoffman) Speaking from experience, I have had some unfortunate trips with guides where 1. The guide seemed to just hate his job 2. Being inexperienced, the guide became frustrated with me 3. The entire operation felt like a shake down 4. the guide was crap at fishing or finally 5. the guide was just completely full of it and a weirdo that did not make for a pleasant 8 hour day in the boat. Miguel's son put me on so many damn fish that day, it was ridiculous. At the time I did not fly fish so I opted for conventional tackle. I hooked two tarpon and had multiple chances at others, caught baracuda and snapper and Made my guide almost cry when a language barrier miscomunication made me spook a massive school of permit as was told to me "I fish every day my whole life, and i have only ever seen a school of permit that big one other time" His son was friendly, did not make me feel like garbage for blowing chances at fish and was just genuinely a decent guy to ride along with in the car. Honestly in the most stark contrast to my experience being guided by a bunch of pompus coke heads in Cuba.

Not much shore fishing opportunities in Cancun itself. If you have a rental car, the best DIY option would be to drive south about 90 minutes, past Tulum, until you come to a bridge at Boca Paila. That time of year, there is good fishing for juvenile Tarpon (10 to 30lbs), Bonefish, Snook and the occasional Permit. Fish both on the lagoon and the flats on the beach side. Keep an eye out for the croc's when wading....I've seen them up to 12 ft long. If you want a great day out, get in touch with Miguel Encalada at Fin Chasers..him and his son are great people and guides. They fish Isla Blanca which is about 45 minutes north of the Cancun hotel zone. They will pick you up in the morning at your hotel for a day of fishing in a panga (small outbord skiff). In January, it will be mostly juvie Tarpon and Snook. I've been out with them 3 different times, and it's always been a great fish filled day. Even small Tarpon are a blast...think of a 20lb Smallmouth...the acrobatics are insane..The Snook are like a Largemouth on speed. I like a fly rod, but spinning tackle is fun too..The fishing is in the channels and cuts of the mangroves...the water is never more than 6 ft deep and it's always dead calm. I lost a dear dear friend this week. All of a sudden, no warning, just gone. Not often you have a close friend that you golf with, hunt with, fish with. He was one of my greatest friends of all time. RIP Bob Loved ya. I post this, not for sympathy, please don't, but look at your close friends and realize tomorrow you could wake up and they're gone.
