AdamS Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 So I'm installing the new gps I got and I'm just wondering which battery do I hook the power to. I've got a 24v trolling motor so 2 battery's for that plus 1 more. Which one should I use? Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys
mattp33 Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 I think you will want to hook this to the single battery, I use the starting battery for mine.

Sinker Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Yep, hook it to the starting battery. Hook it up to the two that are 24v and you could see some smoke! S.
mattp33 Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Yep, hook it to the starting battery. Hook it up to the two that are 24v and you could see some smoke! S. not the good kind either!!!
AdamS Posted August 23, 2014 Author Report Posted August 23, 2014 Thanks guys I probably would have hooked it to the 12v. I just realized the supplied wire is too short to get to the battery so I have to teach myself some fuse panel basics:s
AdamS Posted August 23, 2014 Author Report Posted August 23, 2014 Also Lowrance instructions show the wires going to a 12v battery?
mattp33 Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 They just want you going to a 12v supply with a fuse. If you have a fuse block in your boat like mine you can run power to a fuse and ground to a central grounding block that most blocks have.
AdamS Posted August 24, 2014 Author Report Posted August 24, 2014 I didn't have an open fuse so I tried taping into one and grounding to a piece of metal but it wasn't an actual ground. I didn't see a ground around the area. I think all I need to use is the black and red wire so should I be grounding the black one? That's what I tried, and I tried taping into 2 different wires with the red (one at a time) but I couldn't get the unit to power up. Any ideas?
Terry Posted August 24, 2014 Report Posted August 24, 2014 you don't want to ground things that way, always run wires to + and -
BillM Posted August 24, 2014 Report Posted August 24, 2014 you don't want to ground things that way, always run wires to + and - Yup. Do it once, do it properly.
AdamS Posted August 25, 2014 Author Report Posted August 25, 2014 So any idea what to do if there is no ground at the fuse box?
Terry Posted August 25, 2014 Report Posted August 25, 2014 IMO you should not ground wiring on a boat, in the real meaning of grounding (do not use the boat as a ground)all DC voltage should be isolated from the boat you could/ should have a - (grounding block) near the fuses if not run a - wire to the battery but if you gave a fuse block there has to be a wire for the negative wire
misfish Posted August 25, 2014 Report Posted August 25, 2014 you could/ should have a - (grounding block) near the fuses This is what I meant. When I had the ranger, there was a main ground block for everything.
Sinker Posted August 26, 2014 Report Posted August 26, 2014 Yep, there will be a ground block somewhere. Follow the negative wire off the battery, it might lead you to it. Post the pics you texted me. Maybe someone here can help. S.
