Cudz Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) Compared to daylight fishing for salmon off piers and in rivers, what kind of success do you guys have at night while casting spoons? Is casting spoons the way to go? Edited September 24, 2008 by Cudz
Canuck2fan Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) Spoons out proform most other methods off of piers IMO. I have only caught one salmon in the dark in about 30 trips. Just before dark and right after dawn always seem to produce the higher numbers on the L Huron tribs. However, on a night near the full moon the numbers seem to go higher at night. fishermccann Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Have been out 4-5 times this fall, at night, ( only time I can go ) Nada, Nothing Zilch . Bupkiss....
CLofchik Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Night is much better than day time. Not even close. There has to be fish there to catch though.
wuchikubo Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Now it may be different depending on the body of water. I've tried the Notty at night with fish splashing about but didn't have any hits at all on the glowing cleo. But I've also seen some reports with fish being caught on other bodies of water with glow spoons. Go out and give it a try, you're not giving yourself a chance by not being on the water.
Reef Runner Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Between moon rise and sunset is when I see the activity picking up. Never caught one at night but lots of people here do! Spoons off of piers are the prefered method, so I've read. I never caught one that way, 'cause I just found out I was reelin' too fast, lol. At least all my spoons are super clean.
Paully Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 " Never caught one at night but lots of people here do! " I'll definately agree with that... just as the sun is settin is "prime time " if you ask me.

Paulus Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Also... count your depth before you start your retrieve. 5, 10, 15, 20 seconds... until you hit bottom, and do this while fan casting. For one thing, it gives you something to concentrate on when they are not hitting well, and for another, you cover a lot more water. p.-

BeRad3000 Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Nightime with glow spoons is the way to go. Cleo's are my weapon of choice.
ccmtcanada Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 It's been a slow year for me, but I only fish for salmon at night. Here's a report that shows a night time salmon...using a glow in the dark cleo. I use the same strategy for casting as Paulus.... http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.p...mp;#entry248447
Rich Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 "Night fishing for salmon at night" I find it's much better than night fishing for salmon during the day.
Cudz Posted September 25, 2008 Author Report Posted September 25, 2008 went out tonight for an hour on the Notty and fan casted an area with a cleo glow spoon and ended up losing it and snapping my rod in half. Nice! I had another rod but I didn't feel the joy after losing $100. Did n't see any rise so I went hom. I only live 15 mins away so I will go back another night.
spinnerdoc Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 one thing i do to my cleo's is to change the trebles to siwash hooks(?) single barbless- i find that i don't get snagged when i count down a little too long to hit bottom.
