Canadian Artist dies in Algonquin Park

I was shocked by this and thought I would post it. Reports indicate it was a heart attack in North Tea. Tragic but I can think of worse ways to go....

 

I have always loved his work.

GUELPH – Renowned Canadian painter Ken Danby has died at the age of 67.

Greg McKee, the manager of the Danby Studio in Guelph, Ont., said Danby died Sunday while canoeing in Algonquin Park.

McKee said it's believed Danby died of a heart attack, but the cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is completed.

Danby, born March 6, 1940, in Sault Ste. Marie, is recognized as one of the world's foremost realist painters.

He's best known for his 1972 painting "At the Crease," depicting a masked hockey goaltender.

He is survived by his wife and three sons.

In the 1980s, Danby prepared a series of watercolours of Canadian athletes at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.

He has also served on the governing board of the Canada Council and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Canada.

 

In 2001, he was vested in both the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada.

I must say that I had never heard of this guy before so I did a search to find his work. All I have to say is "amazing"!

 

We were up in Algonquin this past weekend and I couldn't think of a better way to go. Absolutely beautiful.

As a goaltender for many years I have always cherished "in the crease" and have a very large print framed up really nice. Too bad he's gone but he sure picked the right place to go...Gods' country. Condolences to the family.

Did not know his work until now (sadly) but my brother has "in the crease" (he is a goalie too). After checking out his website. Man, love the old mills, run down houses and the water paintings...

Really enjoyed his work, especially the Canadian outdoors paintings, so much detail you would think your looking at a photo... would love to own one, but I think priced out of my range... condolences to his family!
