Wonderful news Brian! Congratulations to you and your family!

If you spent half a day spinning the starter over there is a very good possibility you may have overheated the starter and burned it out. Starters draw a lot of energy and much of it turns into heat. eventually it can melt internal parts and short out. Always give it time to cool after extended cranking. This advise pertains to all starting motors. However...like many of the folks have said already, batteries only have so much energy stored, connections (both power & grounds) can burn and go open circuit and solenoids can also develop bad contacts.

Years ago in my truck driving days I worked with a guy that drove tractor trailer with one eye. He was one of the better drivers too.

I use the compass more than the GPS. Get a good one too, not one that spins in circles when hitting waves. I don't trust my GPS. Especially when the chart doesn't show some islands on Nipissing. Tach and voltmeter most important gauges.

If you lead the consumer to believe it is required for the safety it is fraud and you can be charged if you bill them. I just let the customer know what is or isn't a safety related item and let them make the decision on the non safety items. They almost always want the repairs recommended.
-
The only legal requirement when I do a safety on vehicles is a licence plate light on the the rear and one tail light. Larger trucks and buses regulations are different. Brake or signals is not a requirement because hand signals use can make the vehicle legal. I can actually be charged by the ministry for forcing those to be repaired. On the front, both headlights must work and be properly aligned. I know it doesn't make sense, but what government regulations do?

This one looks like it would be a lot more fun. Might be a dollar or two more though. http://www.seven-marine.com/

Ya, but Roy, what do you do if you get a big fat guy sitting at the front?

Happy Birthday Wayne!

I'm in there Wayne. Hope she gets it!

I like a boat with a windshield and a top. Not everyday you go out and the weather is perfect. Protects from nasty cold and wet weather and those baking hot sunny days.

His request approved, the CNN News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go'. The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.' 'Why?' asked the pilot. 'Because I'm a photographer for CNN' , he responded, 'and I need to get some close up shots.' The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me, is . . . You're NOT my flight instructor?'

Nope, not working for me either. But that's OK, don't have much to say anyhow.

If you are thinking about buying a Quantum Smoke, Please read
Bernie replied to ah_long's topic in General Discussion
Shoddy craftsmanship there, not sure of the inner workings if the outside looks like that. I'll bet they all look like that. Mass production. Is sending it back going to change anything? You just may end up with the same thing. Tried a supposedly good Quantum a few years ago. Used it one day and gave it away to someone. Bought another Shimano. At least you know Shimano is going to be well made. Even the cheap ones are good, still have the first one I ever bought. Why the other reel companies can't seem to step it up I don't know. -
Oops, older model, doesn't have rear control arms. Never mind, it has rear leaf springs.
-
Don't forget about tie rod ends, ball joints, control arms, lateral control arm, steering damper and front axle U joints. If it needs some of this stuff it can add up in a hurry. I always suggest to my customers to have it checked before you put a nickle in it.

Is it possible to load Mapsource to a Lowrance? I have the Mapsource Lake Nipissing chart loaded on a hand held Garmin Rino and it's the same Lake Nipissing map I have on the cottage wall. It's right on the money and shows everything the way it should be. I'm seriously considering dumping the Lowrance for a Garmin.

I prefer Slimy-Grimy to Starbrite. Comes in a powder. Mix it in a pressurized spray can.

Hello and welcome to OFC. Wayneg,if he is assuring you it's in good condition, it must be OK....Ya, where have I heard that before! An engine of that age has little or no value if it needs a lot of work. On the other hand, if indeed it is in good shape it could be worth more, $500 say? This is 2011 so that makes it over quarter century old. Ask the seller if you can get it checked over by an experienced marine mechanic before you buy it. If it's OK the marine guy may give you a few tips on what it does need, or if it's junk you saved yourself a pocket full of cash for spending little. There's my advise, some others may throw in a few more bits of wisdom as well.

Thank you Art. I hope that each one gets better than the last. I was talking to my paint and decal supplier this evening and picked up a few more tips. Yes Roger, many memories for me too. I'm the little guy sitting in the boat about 1960. Thank you CCMAR. Yep, painted just the way it was when made in 1958.

Looks like you guys had fun, and caught a few fish too. Good stuff. I like the deal if you get skunked you have to do the dishes....Hmmm, on second thought....never mind. I drove truck up and down that highway for several years. There were more lumber trucks going back then, but there were not as many guys hitting the bush as there is now. Back then you didn't go to driving schools, you learned from pros first.

Art, I didn't say mushy, I said slower. The ratio of wheel turns per distance of steering travel. It may depend on type of setup too. I prefer quick response but as I said, they sure work smooth.

Hi Art. Just undertaking this on my glass boat. We had enough parts and pieces sitting around so I gathered it all together. Haven't started to install it yet. Going to wait for warmer weather in the spring. I have used boats with it. My only complaint was it is a little slower than direct cable. But the smoothness of it overcomes that minor detail.

Thank you Brian. They were probably one of the best looking outboards made, so it makes it easier to make it look nice.

Thank you Pidge. I didn't make it to the show this year. I don't know why they were not at the show, usually there are a few there. Thank you JDS Time is the factor Mike. Other than a LOT of elbow grease with lots of sanding, priming and sanding again plus attention to detail it goes pretty easy. A little practice with the spray paint helps.
