Charging trolling motor bat with outboard motor
barrystrs replied to barrystrs's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the great ideas and comments. I use a solar charger for the ice hut but I don't think it is suitable for this application because in order to get enough output you need a big/expensive one and it could easily get damaged. If I use my original plan I am a little worried about overloading the alternator, but if I use the isolator/charger, that someone else provided a link to, it limits output to 10 amps which will protect the alternator. Sounds good! I hadn't thought of a portable generator, but I think this might be the best solution as it can also be used for other things. Thanks -
When I go on holidays I don't have access to hydro. Could I connect booster cables from starting bat to charge trolling batt? As long as I don't leave it connected while trolling to run down starting batt. I usually do more sight seeing on holidays and don't run down the trolling battery, but it would be nice to keep it topped up. I don't plan on using a batt isolater, but I'm surprised that I have never heard of someone doing this. Perhaps there is a safety issue I have not thought of. Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

I have been checked twice this week on Scugog. I think it is great! The second boat, last night, was doing a survey. They did not want to see paperwork, just asked about fish. The pickerel have been eluding me so I didn't have much to tell them.

My hitch receiver is also wearing earings.

Obviously this needs to be fixed. If he is handy, the bottom unit is easy to remove. I don't have a link, but I know there are manuals available online for under 10 bucks. I assume they are copied, stolen, or copywritten somehow, but thats another can of worms.

I love that area up there, but I don't catch much either. The channel to long lake from blind bay has coloured water and I used to catch more, but it doesn't have the same appeal as the sparkling water.

My dad and his neighbour, both in their 70's, have been stopped almost every time they go out. They are in a 14' fishing boat either trolling or drifting. They check the labels on the jackets, make sure the flashlight works, check through the cooler for beer, even though they already asked several times. Then since they could not find any reason to ticket them they recommended that they should have spare flashlight batteries, which they already had even though they are never out at night. Both my dad and his friend were upset and it ruined their whole day. I know most cops are good guys and are out there for the common good, but I cannot understand why they would be harassing seniors.

If, I'm not mistaken, a 40hp force is pre-mix, not oil injected. If it was an overheat alarm, the alarm would not come back on when re-starting the motor until it is running and warms up again.

I have never heard of glyde sticks or the slippery pads, sounds like a great idea, I will try them. Thanks

I have a new to me nitro bass boat, that seems to be a lot heavier than I am used to. One of the places I like to launch has a very shallow ramp. I won't be able to push the boat off the trailer. Has anyone added rollers to a bunk trailer? I have an idea in mind to use a threaded rod to raise a couple of centre rollers just when I need them. Any comments or suggestions? Thaks Barry

If you need to speed up the throttle on a warm engine to get it to start after 5min it is probably flooding. Lots of smoke after starting? One of the float needles in the carbs is leaking.

The strut bearing does not cause a danger, maybe you should just live with it.

Give the stale fuel to someone that has an old car or tractor, it should be fine in any low performance engine that is carbureted. I burn all of the neighbourhoods stale fuel in the antique tractor.

We have been going out from 4-7 pm almost every night on the east side of the lake. We are lucky if we get one fish between 2 guys. Other people around seem to be having the same luck. There are lots of small perch but they won't bite either.

Fished from 4-7pm, skunked again.

Lower unit (fin) damage (NEW PICS OF BOAT)

I wouldn't bother fixing the skeg unless it upsets you to look at it. Adjust the the trim tab above the prop to make the boat steer straight. My $.02 -
Does anyone know of a kit to make the tongue fold besides Fulton. They only have a kit for larger sizes. The tongue I have is 2"x3" . If I can"t find a kit, I will make it slide in and out. Thanks

Canada Puts Brakes on Electric Vehicles (NF)
barrystrs replied to Rich's topic in General Discussion
I look forward to seeing electric vehicles on the road, but not the ones available today. I believe the maximum speed for the Zenn is 40 kph. If you have ever used an electric car, you would realize how much they slow down going up a grade. I would be surprised if it went 25kph up even a moderate grade. I wonder if they have been tested when the batteries are cold? Our traffic jams are bad enough now, and the hundreds of cars idling behind one of these fancy golf carts is going to waste a lot more fuel than it is going to save. Never mind the lives lost due to accidents and road rage. In my opinion any car on the road must be able to go with the flow of traffic. PS. I use electic carts at work and they are terrific. -
On scugog the owner of a private canal put a cable across to keep boats out. It is a great spot for crappies. If you are not allowed to touch a dock, does this mean you cannot touch the cable? A small boat could be pushed over the top of the cable using paddles. Any comments?

Skunked ! Other than a couple of small perch and a rock bass. We were on the east side of the lake, south end from 8-11am. There were a lot of boats, more than I have ever seen. I don't think anyone else in the area was having sucess based on the way everyone kept moving around.

I recently purchased an older boat that has problems. I think the u joints are worn out and the water pump is leaking. I tried to get a manual from the library, Canadian Tire, and went to a marina, the marina said they ordered one in the fall and it still hasn't come in. Does anyone have an old one they would be willing to sell, or a suggestion where to get one? It is a 1980 mercruiser 170 hp 4cyl ford. The outdrive says 470 on it. Thanks Barry 905 985-3215

I have only posted a few times. Someone has usually already replied with advise that is basically the same as mine, so why repeat it. I usually use computers at work that are not mine, so I don't log in, and therefore cannot post or use any of the other features on this site. At home I only have dial up, so I don't look at photos. I do not have access to youtube or any other video type material that is often linked. I think you have a great site just the way it is and should not risk changing it. PS. Thanks for the tips and opinions, which braided line to use, which underwater camera, etc. Thanks Barry

Some models/sizes had more troubles than others. The 85/90 hp were very common on the Bayliners and seemed to last a long time with no trouble. The 120 hp had serious powerhead troubles, My neighbour has a 40 on a 16'alum. Shortly after bending a prop, the lower unit went, you can visually see how small they are on a 40 or 50. Over a couple of years the head gasket went twice. Then later it blew a piston and he changed the power head to a 50. It is still working ok, but the lower unit was gone on the 50 too, thats how he was able to get it cheap. The marina seems to have a stockload of these things in various stages of disrepair. If you are getting it cheap and can do repairs yourself it might be worth a gamble.

I chose to fight the ticket. When I went to set the trial date they offered to reduce the ticket to minimum, and remove all points, it was 3. That was good enough for me, I was happy. But it is still a speeding ticket on your record. There was a paralegal there from Xcopper, he followed the same procedure for his client as I did, but I didn't pay $400. It only took about 2hrs.

I wouldn't recommend the single stage with a rubber impeller unless you have a paved driveway. They work great on pavement because they pull themselves along as they wipe the path clear. You can imagine what happens in gravel.
