  1. on second look, the tail markings look a bit like a peregrine falcon. they are a smaller bird about the size of a pigeon maybe slightly bigger. I cant think of another smaller preditory bird. looks bigger in the picture against the bg
  2. GREAT POST !!! sounds like the little guys is gonna out fish his pops one day. Ya gotta post some when he gets a good one. I want to see his face. Looks like a hawk or a turkey vulture, but hard to tell in the picture.
  3. Yup, what spoon said. You still have to be really careful when lifting and stowing motor so as not to pinch the cable in the mechanism.
  4. 2 pool balls, an old hockey sock, and 15 minutes behind a closed door.I bet they would remember that the next time the urge to be jerks overtook them
  5. are you looking for a banner to use on the net, or one for print. i can make you a graphic for use on a website. no problem and no charge. well maybe if you like them, we could trade them for a lure. I do good work too.
  6. i hear ya, like i went to the dollar store today, and they refused to sell me a dollar someone should put a stop to this
  7. Thanks all !!! I appreciate the approval. Buying the boat and going fishing again resurfaced a lot on memories of fishing with him and my bro.Oh the tangles and knots we kids would end up with in our lines. He never got angry, just shook his head and laffed and went to work untangleing us. He was a warrant officer and was a proud soldier, but he was just dad with us.
  8. welcome to the board kwan !!! fish as often as you can with dad. its something you will remember forever
  9. Well, here are the before and after.i decided all i would do is change the handle(it was made from a very soft wood) and clean the blade.Handle now is kiln dried maple, lightly stained in honey maple stain. The blade cleaned up better than i expected.I used steel wool and turbine oil, then buffed it with my dremel and some 'blue rouge' just for you aplumma ,and i can't remember what its called in french, but it took me 20 mins to get him to understand what i wanted.Bleu rouge i said, in french,he just stared at me like i was rabid. His boss heard me and came over with and directed me to the proper isle. that stuff is miraculous.once the stain and clear coat are completely dry, i plan on polishing the handle up with a good pastewax and buff it. I will use it for the purpose my father intended, and pass it down the line. when i removed the old handle, there was dryed up moose and deer blood between the handle and the blade that has been there for almost 50 years. You can see it on the inside of the old handles in the pictures. In my eyes its still the same knife, and knowing him like i did, i know he approves. thanks to all your input. Paul
  10. Lew, the name is Paul Dad passed 21 years ago. and everytime i go to visit Mom, i go down to his workshop and just stand there for awhile. I can still see him with the old flouresnet lite over his worktable, either carving a duck,or painting by numbers Its exactly the way he left it. Mom can't get into the basement because of her hips. They give her alot of trouble. Last month i found his old Pentax Cameras and she gave them to me.Still like new and work like a charm. Old hand tools, he loved those things.Even found some really old fibreglass fishing rods stacked behind the furnace. All well used and all without a scratch on them. he was a great man. and i miss him alot.
  11. i have dee goose bumps !!! nice workspace. i'm all tingly
  12. thanks to all, i will be careful and post a picture when its done. Next time im in Ottawa i plan on rumageing around his work shop, cause i know 100% that i've seen a russell in there somewhere.A really old one, like one of the ones i saw today on ebay. Maybe in one of his old ammo cases. Feels like im on an adventure !!
  13. wow, this has turned into an interesting search. I contacted the company in Pictou NS here is the email and answer. HELLO I RECENTLY ACQUIRED AN OLD KNIFE FROM MY FATHERS ESTATE. SOMEONE SAID IT WAS A RUSSEL BELT KNIFE. SEE BELOW.http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/mercman2/?action=view&current=HPIM1698.jpg ALTHOUGH IT RESEMBLES YOUR STYLE, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A BLADE LIKE THIS ON THE INTERNET ASSOCIATED WITH A RUSSELL AND, THERE IS NOTHING INDICATING THAT IT IS A RUSSELL. MY FATHER WAS IN THE CANADIAN ARMY, AND I THINK THAT HE MAY HAVE MODIFIED THE BLADE OR PERHAPS COPIED THE STYLE.ANY INFO THAT YOU CAN GIVE ME WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU PAUL WHITE ....................... Good dayThank you for your inquiry. This was not made by us. Good luck with your search!Best Regards, Grohmann Knives Ltd www.grohmannknives.com 116 Water Street, Pictou, Nova Scotia Canada B0K 1H0 Phone (local) 1.902.485.4224 Toll free 1.888.7.KNIVES Fax 1.902.485.5872 .......................... This makes me believe that he liked the ergonomics of the russell handle, but not the blade style, so he made one to his liking. Mom has no idea where he got it. She never liked his hunting But she did say he liked to reinvent stuff. Like a .303 military lee enfield he turned into his favorite hunting rifle. I'm finding out a lot about him since starting this project.
  14. ROD SOCK retail around 8 bucks. available for spin or bait cast rods, and in all lengths. i have a six foot box, and keep my rods at an angle also. As long as there is nothing else to slide into the rod and break it. I also wrap a soft cloth around the reel to protect it from scratches.
  15. I searched for quite a while, and i nevr saw a russell quite like this. I'm 55 and i can remember this in my dads hunting cabinet since i was 5. also, no indication on the blade of a manufacturer. I belive he based the design on the russell, thats apparent. I'm gonna see if my mom still remembers. Shes 78 but sharp as a tack.
  16. thats extremely interesting.i was always under the impression that he made it. wow.i will definately check it out.thanks for this info.
  17. here it is. i've decided to remake the handle also. i have cut the maple i've chosen and will start soon. the original is a soft pine or cedar and is cracked and dented. The blade is pitted so i hope i can do something with it.
  18. what y'all laffin at. Isn't that how it's done ??????
  19. EXCELLENT !!! from one newbie to another, don't worry about the expense. It's an investment in your future
  20. same thing happened to me saturday nite coming back to montreal from ottawa. i had to stop 3 times at gas stations to squeegee them off.the windshield washer just smeared them and i couldn't see the road
  21. looks like an old shakespeare spiral cast reel that my grandpa used to use.don't ya just love old stuff
  22. I tend to agree with Dave Bailey. There is no doubt in my mind that fish feel pain. To what degree is unknown. I doubt very much that it has flash backs of its childhood or regrets of things unaccomplished. Either way we look at it, we, and i mean anyone who fishes whether it be an angler, or a comercial fishing fleet, should dispatch the fish as quickly as possible. I have no doubt that everyone on this board does just that, but i have witnessed people hacking live perch into pieces to use as bait for catfish.
