  1. Shoulders indeed!
  2. The chef is next up to bat! Nice catches.
  3. I've never caught a brown. Those are amazing looking fish, the nicest trout in my opinion. Good work, nice write-up.
  4. I lived in Fort Mac and spent lots of time in Fort Chip, I've even spoken with Robert Grandjambe on several occasions. A study is definitely needed to assess the health of the fish and wildlife in the area as there are too many people giving their own accounts on what they "think" is happening. In some sense these requests and urges to the feds are a retaliation on the FN's part and that they know exactly how to get attention, for what purpose well I'd rather not assume. It is also true that Alberta Env. is not properly managing and monitoring the air and water discharges, mostly because they don't have the money and resources to do it properly. They have been very slow in the past to respond to air releases ( i work in air quality). Keep in mind that the athabasca river literally LEAKS oil from it's banks for many miles. If you walk in the substrate of some tribs, your legs will be covered in oil blotches. This is all natural and has been happening for years. That oil naturally contains many contaminates and heavy metals that has been flowing into lake athabasca for centuries. Most of these fish caught are from the nets the natives use to feed their dogs, so also keep in mind they are pulling in a lot of fish, these tumored fish are not a regular occurrence from recreational fishermen. I've caught plenty of fish in Lake Ath. and have never seen a deformity....but that means nothing either in the scheme of things. I've caught many sick fish from other places but I'd regard it more as natural sicknesses similar to what we see in humans. Genetic mutations are more common than you may think. Either way, a comprehensive study is needed to truly understand the effects of the oil sands on these waters. without that it's only everyone's best guess.
  5. I'm sure if salmon snagging was limited to respectful fishermen catching fish in the mouth with marshmellows or roe bags, there wouldn't be a huge issue. But these guys that Kingjames saw are pure bungholes. Pitch forks, and nets, and treble hooks...WOW....you've got to be kidding me, that's like deer hunting at night with a spotlight. It's nothing but abuse...just go to the grocery store and punch a dead fish. Not much difference.
  6. Tres beau! Four casts and a 2.5-3.5lbs walleye? Simply put, you're the man.
  7. I'd say it weighted in close to 10lbs, so yes small for a sturgeon. This fish pulled like a freight train on his light gear, with no shakes or runs...just consistent forward force. Even though it took us a while (maybe 10-15 mins) to bring the fish into shore, it was released within 30seconds and swam away instantly. I was happy to see it come and go. What an amazing looking fish indeed.
  8. Lots of fish or big fish...I'd be happy with either! Looks like you had a good time.
  9. This is a sturgeon we caught on the Ottawa river earlier this summer. My bro caught it while we were fishing for catfish from shore using a homemade worm harness and a worm. His equipment included a beat-up collapsible rod, 14lbs mono and an old "backwoods" reel. Needless to say we were under-equiped and had to rely on non-typical fishing methods to get the fish out of the water. Firstly we had to chase the fish in the canoe because it was spooling his reel. Next we had to maneuver around several deadheads. When the fish really wrapped his line around a log, my bro got the diving mask and went under the water to get him. He didn't know it was a sturgeon so this is how it went: He swims over to the log, dives in the first time and then surfaces: "the fish is still there!" Dives a second time and comes up " its a huge catfish" Dives a final time and comes up hugging a sturgeon "IT'S A STURGEON!!" It was a very climactic event and quite entertaining to watch. Here are two photos of the masked fisherman and a release video.
  10. Thanks for clearing that up....I like the concept even without the motor.
  11. This is the coolest thing I've heard in a while. Is this what they call Funting?
  12. The 6.6" Medium-light action Fenwick Highlander rod is a beauty. Very light, sensitive and strong. It's the best rod at Can. Tire. 79.99 but you can get it on sale sometimes for 59.99. I've been using it for 2years and absolutely love it and don't feel the need to spend any more money for a good walleye rod.
  13. I've passed by this area a few times wondering what exactly they do in the "experimental lakes" area. They've posted summaries from their yearly findings on the link below. Personally I'd stock it with Musky and Pike, set up underwater cameras and sell videos called "Pike vs. Musky: battle royal" or "Pike vs. Musky : it'll knock esox off" http://www.experimen.../Summaries.html
  14. that is a wonderful fish! Very bright colors. Did you catch it with any of your new tackle?
  15. I wash my dishes in a tub.
  16. I spent a few hours at the mouth of the Notty...not a single sign of salmon but I caught a nice pike!
  17. AIC definitly pulled off a good album minus Layne. Blind Melon's new album without Shannon Hoon is also a hit!
  18. You almost fumbled that football!haha. Nice catches. Those are some healthy looking walleye.
  19. Your safe with the boat. Most of that lake is like a bowl where it drops to 17-25 feet within 20-40meters from shore. I like fishing the northern islands because the structure is so nice...they don't always hold fish tho. The are some HUGE crappie there, like I've never seen before.
  20. J & T is based in North Bay. They make spinners and worm harnesses. You can find them at many tackle shops in northern ontario. Not much on the web about them....your right there is an American company with the same name. River Tackle is my own small company. There isn't any information on the internet.
  21. Drop shot slammer, tube & jig combo or a go-getter with a worm tip which is a small trout spinner---not so much for tourneys.
  22. J & T Tackle Rivertackle
  23. Lungelarry...your sons band sounds great. I love the Canadian Indie scene music...Montreal just pumps out the great bands. Here's my band while were at it. http://www.myspace.com/calmforransom
  24. 90's
  25. Haha funny to watch Jack play with the eyes. Good catches man! Nice surprise catching that largy.... good on you for telling the MNR too. I do the same thing when I find something that might be of interest to them.
