Well, things could not have turned out better. Was supposed to have the family + the outlaws (son-in-laws family) up to the cottage for a Thanksgiving weekend (= more cooking/entertaining & less fishing) pending the birth of a grandchild which was due Sept. 30th. As it turns out, my daughter is 'past due' and scheduled for induced labour tomorrow morning (meaning the baby should arrive sometime Friday or Saturday). So get this; the 'women-folk' don't want the men (except for son-in-law) hanging around and getting in the way. We recieved our marching orders last night. The men are to retreat to the cottage and stay away until Sunday or Monday. They'll let us know when to come home. Honest to goodness, true story. So we'll be fishing for pike & walleye. The ladies (& son-in-law) will be fishing for a baby.

Weirdest Fishing experience
Pikeslayer replied to 13 Year Old Bass Master's topic in General Discussion
I fished a private pond (they call them lakes in the south) in Carrollton Georgia. The owner told us to cull anything under 5 lbs. (bass). We took out over 18 fish in about 60 minutes. Threw back a couple of 9 lbs. And lots in between. They insist on calling this fishing. -
There will be some big waves on Lady O this weekend. I don't think I'll be watching the air show from the water. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the smaller planes don't fly due to the forecasted winds.

We wanna be Florida Snowbirds

Check out Panama City FL or Destin FL if fishing is high on your priority list. It can get a little cool in late Jan/Feb but the prices are right and the fishing is awesome. Charters & accomodations there are a lot cheaper than south FL. Definitely worth some internet investigation. Good Luck in your search, Symon -
@ Saneryin, You posted some disconcerting information here From a safe boating perspective and concern for your family, I would like to offer the following; 35 km/h winds = 19 knots. One away from a 'strong wind/small craft warning' Lake Erie, GB and even Simcoe is no place you want to be out 14 km from shore with your family on a 14 ft. dingy with a 400-600 $$ 1970 motor, even @ 15 kt winds. Winds shift & increase dramatically (waves increase accordingly)on these bigger waters and will make it extremely difficult to steer/control your craft with half your 'person' capacity. Most fisherman @ these distances from shore have a secondary motor (called a kicker) that is used primarily for trolling but more importantly as a back up 'safety' option. I sincerely hope that you are not putting 10 adults + 1 child in you boat (are you sure that is your proper rating?). To ensure safety, divide that rating in half. A 9.9 is not sufficient given your 'general use' of your craft. You will not be able to steer/control @ 15 kt with half your load as the vast majority of your boat sits above the water. Given your limited knowledge about motors, stay away from kijiji, ebay & especially craigslist. Post your general area of residence and ask other members to pm you recommendations for certified marine mechanics/marinas that sell used motors with warranty. Your family is worth every extra penny. It seems that you spend a lot of quality time with your family on your boat (good for you). So make sure you have quality equipment & safe boating practices to ensure you have only good memories. Not disasters. All the best to you and yours. Regards, Symon

IMHO, canadian tire is just about the worst place you can hang out. Your'e paying a 15% + premium on any lures/tackle and most of their rod/reels are crap. Find the nearest independent bait/tackle store in the area you plan to fish and do your asking/buying there. As the other guys posted, youtube is great for fish cleaning methods (go with the ones with the most views) & local knowledge + time on the water is better. Books are a good reference after you've spent time on the water as you can then 'relate' to what you are reading. I would add a recommendation for a subscription to Ontario Out of Doors magazine http://www.ontarioou.../?ID=195&a=read Good Luck, Symon

Nice diversion. Add a channel catfish.

Star is very similar. Seems there are more pike than smallies on both lakes. That said, there are some nice gators to be had. For sure in the spring, I would focus on dead baiting. It has been very productive for us. Forego your heavy leaders and stick with green braided power pro. Regards, Symon

I would certainly promote Art's advice. Ask around the marina or wherever you launch for referrals to a reputable trained and certified Merc mechanic (they will have current 'certificates' posted @ the service desk). There is probably a lot of life left in in your Merc and it would be shame to shorten it. BTW, I have a '91 Merc 115 which is a 2 + 2 cylinder. It only runs on 2 cylinders when @ trolling speeds. These plugs get cleaned/replaced more often than the other 2. I'm not sure if the 40 was manufactured with the same option. I hope it is just a minor issue for you Regards, Symon p.s. I learned a couple of expensive lessons by not following advise similiar to Art's. I am located in Ontario, so unfortunately I couldn't refer anybody in your area. But you could look on Mercs website to find authorized dealers.

If you take the time to read the regulations, you'll find the answers to your questions. BTW, we don't have CO's hiding behind every bush! Nice that you have double possession limits in ny state. Guess that's why you come to Ontario to catch walleye
