  1. Jack schooled us old timers today.
  2. I Love it there, never know what's gonna bite. Those are small tarpon, last year same spot I was hooking into 4 footers, they are insanely powerful and extremely good and leaping and spitting the hook, definitely recommend fishing for them, so cool to see the fins break the surface and cast in front of them and get an instant WHAM as soon as the lure hits the water.
  3. Get the Terrova! I have the new Ulterra self deploy, love it, but very expensive and the deploy feature crapped out on the first one, replaced under warranty but I still have my 10 year old Terrova in the garage which I used as back up while the new motor was being fixed, still works like a charm! Oh, go for as much power as you can for your boat, I have a 16' Alumacraft and went from 12V to 24V, was worried the 80" shaft would be too long but it all works beautifully.
  4. Hi all, back from the vay-k. Fishing was good but different this year. The wind was unreal, but having been here before a few times it got me excited about my mangrove spot as in years gone by these conditions turned the bay to chocolate milk and the Tarpon and Snook were on fire, only difference this year was the complete absence of any significant schools of spratt, the pelicans even looked confused by the absence of their usual feast. This scenario played out in all my spots, no baitfish in any numbers....anywhere! The wind was also from the N and NE and not it's usual ESE, which meant that despite huge swells coming in the water remained fairly clear everywhere. I only fished the bay in this video twice, as the second time I went I got nothing but small Barracuda, and with a limited amount of Berkely Ripple Shads I left it alone after that as they tend to nip just the paddle tail off rendering the bait ineffective. There was a couple of small schools of young Tarpon in there and I actually landed one this year, they move around a lot when the bait is scarce so it was difficult to get at them consistently wading the shoreline.
  5. Lol, no doubt. Was not eaten though as there is a risk of poisoning from large predatory reef fish. I thought it was just a combination of local superstitions and religious taboos that had combined to make the Barracuda the hated fish( similar to how disdainful NW Ontarians can be about pike) but a quick search on Google a couple of years ago proved my assumptions dangerously wrong. https://www.emedicinehealth.com/wilderness_ciguatera_toxin/article_em.htm
  6. It is, thanks to my friend here who does fly-fishing guided tours, we always hook up when I'm here and he took me for a cruise around the mangroves in his modified skiff, was a hoot going through 4' waves on basically a raft with a 4hp on it.
  7. Pearl/ pink paddle tail, the beasties love them here
  8. Don't know, was long and heavy, fight was insane, got it all on video, will post when I get back
  9. Hi all, Holiday off to a good start, been out twice, finally landed a tarpon the first day, and lost a humungous snook too. Got a bunch of eater fish that day too. This morning I lost something huge and then managed to land this guy.
  10. Yeah, nice to be able to drive out, waaaaaay less prep needed, and its like fishing in your living room there is so much space in the Otter XTH Pro Lodge my wife got me for xmas. Yep, a real smorgasbord of fish. I am so pumped for my yearly trip, always different. This year it is windy as heck there, thats the norm, whereas last year it was fairly calm. Will be an adventure to get on fish, but i'm hopefully and have spent the whole evening today on Google earth, searching out interesting areas....have a few new spots to try!
  11. Hi all, Got out for a couple of hours on Lake Wabigoon this morning. Instead of sledding out I went further up the lake and drove out of the Reserve's landing to almost the middle of the lake. 24' FOW, light action rods with spoons and minnow heads. Started slow but at 11am it went nuts and caught a bunch of crappie, a tullibee, a jumbo perch, a huge Jackfish, and some sauger and walleye. The sauger and walleye were small but I ended up keeping the ones that blow out their swim bladders. Nice bunch of fish for my neighbour, I don't have time to clean or eat them as I am heading to the Caribbean in 2 days for 2 weeks of sun, sand, family, and FISHING!
  12. Hi all, I've got a couple of days off and planned to go fishing both days. I fought the urge to head out early yesterday because the chores list was piling up. I almost didn't go yesterday because it was 3pm by the time I'd accomplished enough to go out guilt free but saw Manitou's post and had to go. I got on the ice at 3:30pm and by 5pm had a limit of walleye, got around 6 or 7 in total and had a blast. Weather was warm for a change so decided to sit in the open, love my shelter but so much nicer to be out in the open again!
  13. Good to see you fishing buddy! Great pics. You inspired me to go out yesterday evening for some walleye.
  14. good boats, I got an escape a couple years back with the 50hp Yammy. I switched to the 80lb 24volt, I am very technically challenged but managed to switch it from 12V to 24V in an afternoon, biggest pain was the re routing of the wiring, like someone else said, get the dealer to do it....lol. I pilot is a solid piece of kit. Only thing I'd suggest as others have is to go up to 80lbs on the TM, makes a lot of difference, and since you got a deal on the boat go treat yourself on the Ulterra, go on...because you're worth it....lol!
  15. Come on over, BYOB. I emailed you some....lol. Thanks Spiel, I'm having a little reunion with my kitchen recently, have not done much cooking in a while, kinda enjoying it, think because I have time to do it. Thanks dude, was well received for sure, my son wants to do another video recipe with me for it tomorrow night.
  16. Took a couple of the kids from work fishing for walleye, yup...my job involves taking people fishing? I wish I could show the pictures of their smiling faces, but confidentiality policies don't allow. Anyway, I promised to cook the fish for them eat the drop in centre the next day for lunch, they were smiling even more, nice to have a job where you feel like you make a difference to the people you provide service to. Anyway, enough rambling, this is what I came up with..... Cracked Black pepper and rock salt sautéed Walleye and Bacon sandwich on Pumpernickel, with a sweet chilli and horseradish mayo served with fresh cut, homemade onion rings and salad garnish. OH YEAH!
  17. LOL...probably the equipment, sounds like my buddy, his fish finder batteries and auger batteries always run out, he never bothers charging them. I just bought a 2nd hand hand auger and own plenty of 20V drills, will have to do a bit of messing around with the welder to convert it, but should not take long, might just go the clam plate route but even that seems a bit awkward to pack/unpack.....we'll see. Love the video of yours in action! I don't think the electric augers are untested at all, plenty of folks have been using them here for years. I've used them and they are awesome, only thing for me is dropping $800 on one and the fact they are even wider than the gas ones (handle to handle).
  18. Just a quick video of a quick session I grabbed on Friday morning,
  19. I like my jiffy too Sinker, has had the bejeezuz knocked out of it for 11 years and still going strong. But portability is an issue just seems weird that everyone I know has had to here jerrymonger their own rack systems,
  20. Hi all, Just thinking out loud here. I have noticed a real shift in thinking towards using cordless drills for cutting holes in ice. The concept has been used for years but I'm noticing that lots of people are making the switch this year. Does not seem like the Jiffys, Strikemasters and Eskimos of the world have a good response so far. I would think that if those big traditional brands with their BIG traditional augers need to hop on the emerging band wagon quick. I think they should at least design and market auger brackets for various motorized vehicles, as portability and miniaturization, like everything else in the world, seems to be the way people's thinking is going. It just seems strange to me that companies that make ice fishing gear seem to be oblivious or willfully ignorant of what people want , and the practicalities of using equipment on the ground(ice), I have had loads of conversations with fishermen that go something like.................." has the person that designed this ever been fishing?"
