Hi all, Like last year we went from summer to winter and skipped fall. We got a foot and a half of snow the first week of October, last year was the 3rd week. At least I got my boat put away in time this year! No raking leaf piles and jumping in them with Jack , instead we just built our first snow fort at the weekend. And its COLD! Last 2 weeks has not seen temps much above 0ºC, and some of the small ponds have already got shore to shore skims............................. Bird hunting also took a hit like last year, which is a shame because before the snow fell it was looking like a banner year, I only managed to get out with the kids from work, but each time we went, we got our limit and saw 20+ birds. Fishing is still good from shore, turnover happened real quick this year, and the lake I like to go to shore fishing is already on its downward trajectory in terms of the bite as the fish slow down. Still enough to keep me going back, although ice on the guides makes it a challenge some days. All I can hope for is perhaps 1 shot at crappie in the boat on our lake if my schedule permits, otherwise all there is left to say this year is BRING ON THE ICE!

Sorted.

Hi all, well the walleye weren’t playing before work yesterday morning, but the thriving pike that sits in wait for when they are was a hoot to mess with. He smacked the 10” Jake a few times, cool to see close up.

Hi all, I posted back in the spring I was starting to guide at the camp in my bay. I just guided the last guests for the year. My thoughts?.It's fun. It was an odd year on Wabigoon, totally shut down from beginning of August until a couple of weeks back, it was really hot and we had zero rain. Lake level is the lowest I've seen it in 11years. Luckily I was able to put people on fish regardless and I get a real buzz from sharing my passion with like minded souls. I hear a lot of 'American' bashing locally and on Canadian forums, but so far the folks i've met are generous, funny and kind. I was worried about getting paid when the bite was off, but I have had no problem keeping the banter going and using humour to compensate in those situations. I would have to say only one group was a challenge, but after a few hours it was clear nothing would please them and I wondered if they even liked fishing, maybe golf for that crew?....lol. I am straight up with my guests and share with them what I am good at and what i'm still learning, and I am learning lots fishing with experienced and non experienced anglers. I've made a lot of new friends and already have some bookings for next year, gotta say it feels good to have people really appreciate your efforts. I like to go the extra mile for the guests that pay me and its easy to do because I do what I'm getting paid for on most of my off days anyway, so plenty of info sharing via text, unscheduled meet ups out on the lake and follow along trips to other lakes have been given free of charge, and the guests love having a video to take home for memories, I just charge them for a memory card. Its also nice to have a bit of extra income but not having to rely on that. I don't have to take &*&^ from anyone cuz i'll just walk, and they know that, but luckily i have a good relationship with the owners. https://youtu.be/6R8SNPXHLJ8

Too funny, just left the hospital and am sat in the truck eating lunch reading the forum, 10 minutes ago before I left the hospital I asked the Doc if she would let me have a few XL latex gloves for the exact reason you mentioned, she gave me a whole bunch!

LOL...I just realized that Roloff now responds to the 'beep' of the goPro, he knows when it beeps that it is fish on and comes running...smart pup. Thanks HH, without fail a pike tries to snatch a walleye at that spot, I have use of a cache boat there if I want, must get my act together and take advantage of that, would be an interesting day casting some big lures in there. I have my struggles, but it certainly helps to have struggles here than on the TTC....lol. Yeah, he does not even go in after the beaver there, just barks from shore. I used the drone yesterday to scope out a new logging road which I figured must go pretty close to a lake that has AMAZING walleye fishing but is really only accessible in the winter....looks promising.

Hi all, I was finding it difficult to post this, lots of thoughts about Kevin running through my mind, hits close to home even though I never met him. I'm terrible at articulating myself in writing but I started thinking about something my dad told me a few years back, he said "this is not a dress rehearsal", in other words get out there and do what makes you happy, this is it! I could have mown the lawn, cleaned the house, truck, garage etc...etc...but I figure I won't be on my death bed wishing I had done those things, so I indulged my passion and took the dog for a walk, caught some fish and made a video, guess what, the truck is still dirty and our new kitten puked in an already messy house....life goes on.

Talented guy, gone too soon. RIP.

Hi all, I had a spare morning and headed out just before sun up and got on the lake an hour later. I have not fished this lake in ages, used to be my favourite local lake as it holds monster walleye, decent Lake Trout and bass, all catchable with a jig and minnow and good use of your electronics. The walleye are still there but in nowhere near the numbers of years gone by. Pulling a worm harness or bottom bouncer would work well as they are fewer and further between, but I like jigging. I keep a close watch on the screen and get ready to hit Spot Lock as soon as I see a fish...good fun chasing active fish around the structure as they move around hoovering upon the bait fish. Got into a 25" and 26" and a bunch of 18" to 22"ers before switching over to lakers. Jigged up one of the lakers and then threw a bunch of sinkers on top of a bottom bouncer and trolled a William 's spoon for the second one.

Thanks Bunk. Yes, the kids had a great time, I've made a lot of new friends doing this guiding gig, and learnt a whole lot too. It's amazing how stuck in a rut you get fishing solo a lot, picked up a lot of new techniques and started tweaking them to my liking. The drone shots are cool, but my piloting sucks, had over 12 minutes of footage, that one minute or so was all I could salvage that wasn't full of sudden, erratic panning and blurry out of focus garbage....lol. Thanks dude, love the drone too, just so nervous about flying it over water, even with floats on it.

How do they know that is what they are? -
Hi all, Got the opportunity to guide a bunch of kids that were at the camp last week. The kids are the children of an extended family that have been coming to the camp for 30 years, really nice clan. A real pleasure to take these guys out and see how much they enjoyed our adventure, been a while since I've sat in a tinner back trolling, gonna have to do more of it...pretty fun. Kid's all got on some nice fish, we had shore lunch and a swim and got home by 6pm, exhausted but full of stories, and of course they have a nice video they can show their kids.

Hi all, I've been pretty quiet on the board this summer, but I still browse the topics and enjoy the banter. I got a break from guiding and my day job and hit the lake with a buddy I've not yet fished with this summer. We got out for 2 hours in the morning, and then another couple in the evening as we both had stuff to do during the day. Both little sessions were fun....lots of fish and giggles. The fish were all in and around the weed lines, we were just pitching jigs with worms or leeches. The morning they wanted the bait moving, the evening they would hit it vertically, again, 12'-14' deep in front of or right in the walleye cabbage. I have hardly used minnows at all this year apart from large sucker minnows up at Lac Seul, but on Wabigoon it is definitely about leeches and worms, worms slightly edging out leeches most days. The fish have started to go deeper now, early for them on Wabigoon but its been a hot summer, will see what baits and patterns I can figure out as the transition begins. Looking forward to getting the crappie again as they head deeper too.

Same here, I spent years and $$$$ cheaping out and still got wet and cold. Spent C$800 on some Cabelas Guidewear....one of the best fish fishing purchases I've ever made!
-
Why not try the mid section of Lac Seul? There is a small outfitter called William's Lake Lodge that would suit your needs perfectly. I fish this area a lot as I live an hour drive away. Trophy walleye, Numbers of fish too, and in mid September the bass are on fire! http://www.williamslakelodge.net/pdf/WLL Brochure 2012.pdf I don't have any connection to the camp I just fish in the same area , there is a larger camp there too called Silver Water Wheel, but I've heard it's pricey and also its a fairly large camp which you say you don't want. Here are a few videos of me up at William's bay at the time of year you are thinking about going

Its a leak in the live well line, turn on the live well and the boat fills with water, so when i'm keeping fish I have to have bilge and live well running or we are going down....lol.
